EOTY Awards – Worst Match of the Year

Criteria here: I’m not including Divas matches, most of the Knockout matches, anything that’s really short (under 3 minutes or so) or whatever Sting and Jeff Hardy did at Victory Road.I’m going to go with Cena vs. Miz in the main event of Wrestlemania.  Not only was the match itself boring, but the ending was atrocious.  I said this in my review and in the Live Discussion of the show: They booked a Dusty Finish in the main event of Wrestlemania.  That isn’t acceptable to me.  This is Wrestlemania, not any other show of the year.  I hold it to a higher standard than a double countout and Rock suddenly having the power to make matches throughout the night.  This didn’t work for me at all and I remember thinking to myself “that’s how they ended it?” after the match and show ended.

I think you make a good argument about Cena/Miz, KB.
Especially when it came to Rock mysteriously having the power to make matches, if he had the power to do that, then why didn’t he change the finish to the Cole/Lawler match?
Was he in the restroom battling diarrhea when that match happened or something? They never even bothered to explain that.
Personally, Cole/Lawler at Wrestlemania is my pick for worst match of the year. That was the 2011 version of Sting/Hogan at Starrcade ’97.
There is absolutely no other way you should book that match other than Lawler kicks Cole’s ass for five minutes straight and wins clean as a sheet, but just like Sting/Hogan in ’97 it was a great example of how to NOT structure what’s supposed to be a blowoff match.
