Thought of the Day: It’s Spreading

I know it’s annoying but…..

So I was at Wal-Mart today and I saw the Brawling Buddies (new version of Wrestling Buddies, which were in fact the coolest things ever), the WWE toy sections, and a towel with Orton/Cena/other WWE guys on it. I know we talk a lot about how family friendly can be annoying, but this is why it’s happened. WWE is right there with stuff like Marvel and Disney and they would be crazy to go edgier again (at least long term) and throw away this sort of opening. Yeah it gets annoying to the older fans, but it’s far better for the company as a whole.

Not close to Disney but I get what your saying. I think the change is all due to being a public company and shareholders. I still think the perfect blend of violence while not being overly graphic in content was 2000-Invasion

I don’t think anyone would be surprised to know that this proves once and for all why WWE is the no. 1 brand of wrestling today; whether you like or you do, you have to admit that their marketing is on par with Disney, Marvel and My Little Pony.

Didn’t they do gangbusters in merchandise when the company was edgier because I’m pretty sure they did. I don’t really care if they go edgier because that’s not the problem in my eyes, I’m just saying they did great with merch when it was edgier.

They did, but that was much more due to Austin and Rock making a fortune. Now it’s much more WWE instead of those two or any other individual star. Also, you’re not getting that much stuff in a place like Wal-Mart otherwise. They won’t carry Rhonda Rousey’s book because it’s too violent. There’s no way they’re carrying the Attitude Era stuff.

I’m OK with PG, as long as WWE adapts properly. Things like Hell in a Cell and chain matches where you can’t choke somebody just feel stupid. You can make things violent without pretending like it’s the most violent thing in the world. Either keep the violence or get rid of it.

But also note how much fighting and death there is in a movie like Avengers. You can get violent and it be OK for kids.

But more than ANYTHING is that WWE needs to have its stories make sense. Superhero movies can be incredibly complicated and still work for kids and adults. That’s the problem with WWE right now. It doesn’t know what it is.

But they don’t go over the top with it like they did in the Attitude Era. Hence why I think they know exactly what they are. Thats why they tell everyone not to perform this stuff at home.
