WCW should have brought Hulk Hogan in as a heel to start with. There was no way that WCW fans were going to cheer Hogan and boo Flair. From what I’ve seen of the early Nitros, it is evident that Hulk Hogan was receiving worse “go-away heat” than John Cena in 2006 (and WWE’s ratings dropped by 25% because they didn’t stop shoving Cena down the throats of the “members of the WWE Universe”).

It seems obvious that the reason WCW beat WWF in the ratings was solely because they finally had the sense to turn Hogan heel in 1996. The Hollywood Hogan character fit the perception of Hogan that most WCW fans already had, which is why it was a success. If the fans hate your top face, they will tune out or won’t even start watching to begin with. That’s why it is important to turn a top face heel if he receives a mixed or negative reaction on a regular basis.

Actually, I’m unsure whether Hogan was responsible for burying Austin and Foley or whether Eric Bischoff genuinely didn’t think they could ever be stars. Judging by the fact that Bischoff had Schaivone mock the WWF for putting the title on Foley, I think it is quite possible that he didn’t believe in their ability.

Hogan debuting as a heel…..that’s a very interesting idea. I’m not sure if it would have worked (not saying it wouldn’t have), but it certainly would have been interesting to see them try.

That middle part is true, especially in early 1996. SuperBrawl and Uncensored were nothing short of disasters.

As for the Austin/Foley stuff, I don’t have actual hard evidence of it being Hogan. However, it seems very odd to me that Foley and Austin were getting pushed harder and harder (Austin had been getting in Flair’s face in early 94 and had been talking about the world title while Foley was the second most popular guy in the company in 93) until Hogan came along when suddenly they were unmarketable. That never made a ton of sense to me so it seemed to be Hogan’s influence, at least to me.
