But look at the tag division from WM 16 to WM 17.Coming into Wrestlemania 16 (April 2, 2000), Edge and Christian had never won the tag titles. Going into Wrestlemania 17 (April 1, 2001), they were record 6 time tag champions and would win their 7th titles that night. In the same year, five other teams (Dudleyz, Hardyz, RTC, Too Cool and Rock/Undertaker) all won tag titles. That’s about one title change every month, yet people complain when it changes every three months today. This was a golden era of tag wrestling though right?
I don’t think Cena himself has done anything to devalue the title.
But despite all of this they meant something, the 2 changes in one night was e&c making sure the hardys couldn’t get there so took their match? No matter how many changes there was the belts meant something
Switch that today and Barrett hasn’t had a feud for the ic title, Infact the belt hasn’t had a feud in forever, Cody vs show may have been the last feud over the title?? How can I buy I belt that apparently noone wants?
Not just the tag titles but it was all the titles back in the so called greatest era of wrestling ever the attitude era. In fact i just realized in 2002, the WWE title changed hands 7 times in one year. Triple H beat jericho at mania, Hogan beat Triple H, Undertaker beat Hogan, Rock beat Taker, Lesnar beat Rock, Big show beat Brock, And Angle beat Big show.
Just want to reiterate how much I loved RAW last Monday. Too bad tomorrow is Thursday and that awful Impact show is on
Title reign length is the most overblown reasoning for “prestige”. Title prestige has always been about the holders caring about the title. Whether the reign is 1 day or 1 year, if the title holder cares and others care enough to want it, it means something. Did Kane’s 1 day reign “ruin the prestige” of the WWE title? Of course not. Heck, I’d rather we have some quick title changes these days. Maybe if we did, we wouldn’t have “throwaway” shows if a couple of titles just changed hands so everyone thinks “it’s too soon” to change the belts again.
How about when they changed hands twice in one night going into WM 17? Edge & Christian won them from the Hardy Boyz and then the Dudleyz win them from E & C. That was RAW,March 19th 2001.
Definitely A great time in tag team wrestling. Great matches between those teams.
