The review I had published on Observer pretty much mirrors exactly the sentiments presented here. The opener is one of the 5 best Mania matches of all time. The filler was better than usual at this event. Lesnar beating ‘Taker was absolutely the right call and one of the most breathtaking moments I’ve ever watched in my long wrestling-watching life. I’ve been a fan since the 1970’s and this match joined a small handful of others on the short list of bouts that transcend the match, the booking, and even the business. Until the final 3 count, I was prepared to give it maybe a star and a half, or a C minus. But the result and the crowd reaction made it the first match to transcend a simple star rating since the Montreal Screwjob.
I give the main event 4 and a half stars, or a solid A. It, like the Lesnar win, also exceeded the quality of the bout itself (which was still tremendous). It’s just another amazing example of how Daniel Bryan has become the most beloved pro wrestler in this country since Steve Austin: no other match, and no other winner, would have gotten anywhere close to the pop that the finish did. This was a sold-out audience of mostly disgruntled, shocked fans who weren’t about to come out of their fog for anybody but Bryan. Just a stunning event, tying in my mind Mania 17 as the best one ever.

I was rewatching the show earlier and I have to say, I think the first hour of Mania was the best first hour for Mania in history. We got the Rock, Stone Cold and Hogan in the same ring at the same time and we got Daniel Bryan beating Triple H in a all time great Wrestlemania opener.

Can I just point out how many times someone would say “for 30 years” or “30 years later…”:
WWE need to invest in some calculators or mathematics tutors.

Yes that is the one thing that bothered me all throughout the show

  4. Yerp says:

Same as other people above have said.. I believe the main reason the lesnar/taker match went bad is because of the concussion. Taker was actually moving well in the early going. It’s possible he can still go and I actually don’t think he wants to end it this way, streak or not. He couldn’t give his best. While a man of pride in the business and doing what he perceives to be the right thing (ending the streak), I can’t imagine him wanting that to be his last match either.

  5. Jerichoholic94 says:

I’m finally watching Taker Vs. Lesnar and it seems after lesnar throws him backwards off the right leg on the floor Taker doesn’t get much offense. Maybe that was what caused the injury ? I don’t know. Just noticed that.

  6. Jay H. (the real one) says:

Im glad you put The Streak is perspective and as much as I wanted Taker to retire undefeated it was his choice to have Brock be the one to end it. We have to respect that and Undertaker is a class act to say the least.

Again such a great Wrestlemania this year and an emotional roller coaster ride of emotions all night long. Its definetly up there with WM 17 & 19.

  7. ted says:

If nothing else Lensar is hall of fame bound. He probably was beforehand but now he will forever be known as the guy to beat the streak.

It would of been more a fitting end to have the undertaker retire undefeated at wrestlemania. Alas it was not to be

To kb point about it not begin realistic for taker to win, It is a show. You can have me a guy with no experience go over Cena because it’s written that way.

  8. WWEFan2014 says:

“it’s very clear that Undertaker just can’t do it anymore. The Last Ride had literally no elevation, the German suplexes were Undertaker being laid down on his back and the Tombstone was just sad. If the Streak had kept going”

Couldn’t it be because he was injured?

  9. #MrScissorsKick says:

Where does this leave Batista at then? I mean, I’m not his biggest fan by any means, yet he won the Rumble. Where does he go from here?

  10. M.R. says:

Better Opener: Harts or Triple H/Bryan?

Also, Cena winning was the wrong move. Not only does the face winning basically negate the need for the feud to continue, but instead it would have made more sense having Cena win a follow-up gimmick match where he snaps and beats the shit out of Wyatt with weapons, which seems to be the direction they’re leaning towards with Cena’s character. Either way I still find Wyatt to be totally captavating anytime he’s on my screen.

    • Thomas Hall says:

It’s a tossup but I’ll take last night. It’s a different kind of match but the Owen one had less emotion.

      • Civil Defence says:

        What??? LESS emotion???

That is completely bonkers. Two brothers, one that had refused to fight for months. One the former champion, the other an up-and-comer looking to prove himself.

Not only that but EVERYONE knew HHH wasn’t going win.

Give me the Harts over WM30 any day.
I’m not saying Bryan vs HHH was bad, but the whole time I was just waiting fro Bryan to get the pin. And yes, I do mean the pin – a decisive 3 count was exactly what I knew would happen

  11. Awesome_Miz says:

I respect Taker for choosing to end the streak once and for all. Was Brock the right answer? Yes. Why? Cause it has been said that Taker has been wanting to give up the streak and in 2010 he wanted Lesnar for that shot. Remained the same to this day. He chose Brock cause he is a guy Taker respects, sees as an established SOB, and most importantly a friend.

  12. FunKay says:

The more I see this show (I’ve sat through it fully twice and caught bits here and there otherwise) and the more I see the response come out, the more I feel like this was my WrestleMania.

True I wasn’t there (you lucky son of a gun) but I was so emotionally invested in the events. I was practically on my knees begging Batista to kick out of the RKO and willing Bryan on whilst sitting in utter disbelief as the Streak died.

Even the minor stuff was great. The Shield murdering the NAO’s and Kane was well worth the price of admission and really dug Cesaro’s (apparent) star turn as he won that trophy.

I love this show and while I agree it wouldn’t surpass Mania 17, it’s a far more personal experience than that show for me (which is likely due to the fact I wasn’t a fan until summer 2001, but hey-ho).

    • Thriller says:

I think this is a big part of why this show was great. Like Jake said in his HOF speech, wrestling is all about emotions and this show played off of emotions beautifully. The saga of Bryan, the end of The Streak, Wyatt’s mind games; all of them were designed to get you emotionally invested and they did an amazing job of it.

  13. Heyo says:

Oh, and it was announced on the preshow that the tag team match was changed to an elimination match.

    • Thomas Hall says:

Ah. See we didn’t hear the announcements. Lillian just introduced the announcers and Colter did his thing.

  14. Heyo says:

I would have given Triple H/Bryan A+, Cena/Wyatt A-, and the main event an A, but I can’t disagree with anything else. Even though I know some are going to hate it for the Streak being snapped, Cena going over Wyatt, and Bryan winning the belt(seems like you can never please the IWC after all) but that was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

I can’t put it over WM17, because there were only two matches there that were not good and there were TONS of classics(we really should mention Angle/Benoit and Taker/HHH more often) but I might just place this one below it.

  15. Fred says:

Considering all WM17 has is a gimmick match in TLC2 and the over-rated Rock-Austin, I think its safe to say WM30 tops it

    • Thomas Hall says:

      “A gimmick match and the over-rated Rock-Austin.”

      Just…..no.

      • Heyo says:

TLC2 is the most mind blowing match of all time for me in terms of high spots. I still can’t believe those guys wrestled as long as they did(with both Hardys still wrestling) because those spots could ruin careers forever if they were botched.

I haven’t seen Austin/Rock yet, believe it or not(yeah, I know i need to watch it) but saying TLC2 is just a gimmick match is like calling Hogan/Andre just a bigger main event than usual.
