When I remember back to Edge and his first MITB briefcase what stands out to me was that the briefcase was just a thing he had and not everything about his character. Between winning the case at Wrestlemania and beating John Cena at New Year’s Revolution he had two lengthy feuds with Kane and Matt Hardy. Now he always had the case with him, and he used it to cheat and win matches, but it was not the main focus. With those feuds the main focus was Lita, and the case was an afterthought.
This is the biggest problem with MITB. The WWE makes it too much of a big deal. The announcers are constantly bludgeoning us over the head with the concept, and anyone who holds it, that’s the whole of their character. Just tone the coverage back, and write feuds for the holder that have nothing to do with the case. Ultimately, if you can make us forget that they even have it, then you can bring the surprise back.
Money in the Bank wouldn’t irritate me as much they didnt have the briefcase holder lose every single match they were in until winning the title then just magically develop ways to win a match which leads to very boring title reigns.
Great read on McIntyre the other day by the way. Here’s to hoping.
