It was a great show and the match is undisputedly great. It’s definitely my match of the year( closely followed by Almas v Gargano) and I don’t think we need to debate Meltzer’s star ratings every time he breaks it( he has given two other NJPW 5.5 Stars this year and gave the G1 final last year a 5.75 and really made a huge fuss). The whole reason he broke his system is draw attention to a company that is pushing boundaries and needed to be spotlighted above and beyond so that the west would take notice. I really look forward to seeing how far they let Kenny run with belt and if he can get to WK13 with it.

Also KB, are you going to watch some G1 this year? It’s the best time of the year imo and while obviously reviewing 19 shows( which all have live English commentary for the first time ever this year) would be a lot to digest and almost impossible given your other duties I do think you would enjoy New Japan just a little more if you did take in the G1.

There’s a chance I’ll watch the finals but that’s about it. The shows run long and there’s just not much time.

That makes sense. The final three nights in Budokan Hall should be nuts especially the night before the final since that is the night we are getting Ibushi v Omega for the first time in 6 years.

I’m still debating if its the best match of this year alone. I go back and forth with the Ciampa/Gargano match. I get that this one has a far larger overall story (by the way, I still owe you that article) but it kinda lacked the personal connection you get with Ciampa/Gargano where you knew of the personal lives of the two. Here you know Okada and Kenny’s careers and their ring work. But if you don’t care for the individuals in the match, Kenny’s win and Okada finally losing (and crying, seriously dude you have an attachment issue), the match loses value.
