Yeah it was another top notch Takeover from the NXT crew. I don’t think that was Heel turn for Io Sharai as i think she’ll get another shot in Toronto. Also props to the Bridgeport crowd as they were on fire.

It continues to blow my mind that NXT is produced by the same company that produces RAW and Smackdown. Someone give me a list of 5 creative mistakes NXT has made. RAW makes 5 in the first hour, weekly.

Just an “A” show again, from top to bottom.

Here’s a simple one. NXT does not do backstories basically ever. This is a problem, as many of the NXT talents go up to the main roster and all that we see is “cool entrance, can have good matches”. There’s no investment in people beyond that. So as much as we enjoy NXT and their great PPV events, we need to demand more as far as that goes. We can’t have insulated stories that don’t translate to the main roster anymore. It’s easy to blame Vince. It’s much harder to blame the lack of effort on NXT’s part to truly develop what they have to succeed at the next level.

While I absolutely agree to some extent that NXT could flesh out characters more, when guys do get called up with backstories or “gimmicks”, they’re quickly dumped on.

That’s true, but there’s only so much that NXT can do when their job, at least for the established names coming in, is to serve as a holding tank/finishing school. For people like, say, the Undisputed Era, they already have their personae built. What isn’t established is mainly developed through promos. The days of specific gimmicks aren’t over yet, but they’re nowhere near as necessary as they used to be.

        • EC3 says:

Right, but take a guy like Nakamura or a Bobby Roode. Guys are brought in as “big deals”. We know them from outside WWE and they are stars. They get cool entrance music and a cool aura around them, because NXT is cool. Then, they are immediately in the main event picture because they are cool and over. Then, they likely win the title because their feud is over the title. Then they lose it, and go up to the main roster. Now, they are a cool entrance and that’s it. While I know that Nakamura is the “Michael Jackson of wrestling”, that isn’t enough. I know Bobby Roode is “glorious”, but that’s not going to get us invested in them. NXT can do better, as can WWE to remind the fans who these people are (perhaps on commentary instead of catchphrases like “Balor Club has come to x city!”, maybe build up who these people are so we have reason to care). I’m afraid of Kushida in that way. At this point, he’s guaranteed to flop.

          • Thomas Hall says:

That’s all true. However, I’d blame that way, way more on the main roster than on NXT. Roode had a backstory: he was a star and wanted to take NXT to the next level. He did that while NXT Champion and is ready to move up to the big time. That’s not much, but it’s a character that was developed when he was allowed to talk.

Then when he goes to the main roster, it’s just GLORIOUS with no mention of everything else. And yeah, commentary with their one line explanations of things does no one any favors.

I don’t like Cole winning, unless he holds on a while. I feel the title is flipping too often now

    • Jack-Hammer says:

It’s not really being flipped often as their first match in New York was for the vacated NXT Championship. Tommaso Ciampa had been champ for 238 days before having to give up the title due to ongoing neck issues that required surgery to fix.

Granted, I did think Gargano would have a longer run with the title before dropping it, which means he may be on his way to the main roster. A few years ago, that would’ve been great news but Vince’s atrocious booking decisions have made finding success on the main roster a dubious process if you’re not a certain type. Gargano might find himself wasted on the main roster either in lousy programs where he suffers from lousy creative decisions or sitting on his ass in WWE limbo alongside much of the roster already.

  4. Shawn says:

KB, do you think Gargano is the greatest NXT superstar of all time? If not, who is?

  5. BestSportsEntertainer says:

I love how this show is more than worthy of an “A”, and yet it’s not even close to New York.
