Hidden Gems #12: Nice To Meet You (And The New Way I’m Doing These Things)

So as you may or may not know, every Thursday the WWE Network releases some Hidden Gems, which could be a little bit of everything. It could be a match, a promo, a segment, or even a full show, many of which have never been released before. Now as you can imagine, this has me drooling but since I tend to try to make the reviews a bit longer, it takes me forever to do a set of these.

Therefore, I’m going to switch things up a bit and do these when I have the time and throw up however many I do in a session. I’ve gotten a chronological list of everything released (or as close as I can get) will be busting out my trust random number generator to see what is up next. It might be one, it might be three, it might be any other number. You never know how long these things are going to be as they can run from a few minutes to a full show. I love these things though and really want to do them, so I’ll be seeing what I can do with them in shorter form, which could be rather interesting. Let’s get to it.

Date: 1992

Razor Ramon vs. Tito Santana
Date: June 29, 1992
Location: Civic Center, Glens Falls, New York

Now this is how you start things off! This is Razor’s one of Razor’s first matches in the company and if I just have to watch Santana, so be it. It’s also only from the hard camera so there is no commentary. Razor is from Orlando and has generic music, plus long tights instead of the normal trunks. The vest is there though. Santana is El Matador for your pretty weak idea of the day. There’s the toothpick throw, so a lot of the elements are already here.

Razor shoves him away a few times so Santana goes with a top wristlock. They pause again and it’s so strange seeing the production crew walking around because they know no fans outside of the arena are seeing them. Santana’s crossbody gets two and it’s off to a wristlock. Tito stays on the arm so Razor finally sends him outside for a breather. Some loud chopping ensues until Razor takes it back inside to keep up the beating.

There’s the chokeslam, which Razor did before almost anyone else, for two and it’s off to the double arm crank. Tito reverses into one of his own but gets elbowed in the face for his efforts. A legdrop between the legs keeps Tito down, though the clock on the screen covers him up. Tito makes the comeback by slugging away and there’s a dropkick for a bonus. The flying forearm gets two thanks to a boot on the rope so Razor slams him down. The middle rope elbow (because Razor does a middle rope elbow) misses though and Tito goes up for a crossbody, only to have Razor roll through and grab the tights for the pin at 11:10.

Rating: D+. This picked up by the end but it was a pretty dull match for the most part with both guys working on the arm. Part of the problem here though is that Razor got over because of his vignettes and promos and the matches were secondary. This was coming in cold so it can only get so far. Not a disaster or anything, but Razor still needed some tweaks.

There’s something sad about Santana having to stand in the ring and picking up his pink jacket as Razor’s music plays.

Overall Rating: D+. So yeah this was a one off thing and I’m kind of liking the idea of doing them so fast like this. There are going to be days where I have a little more time but this one was a short one and that makes for a rather easy time. The match wasn’t anything to see, but it’s a little oddity from history and that is exactly what the point of this thing is. I’m looking forward to doing more of these things and that’s a nice feeling after how the weekly shows have been so far.
