I have returned for my annual fill in the blanks/context for anyone who cares but doesn’t watch njpw year round.

    1) Rambo: Chase Owens was definitely doing a Shawn Michael’s royal rumble 1996 tribute in the match.

    2) ELP is a fantastic heel. Probably a top three heel in all of wrestling imo( behind Jay White and MJF). This is guy that back when they had crowds would go into the crowd and find children with other faction’s or wrestler’s hats or towels and STEAL THEM AND PUNT THEM ACROSS THE ARENA. The man understands how to get heat.

    3) This Moxley v Kenta thing has supposedly been built since the summer when Kenta won the title shot but Moxley can’t go to Japan and Tony Khan won’t let him wrestle in the U.S. for njpw( understandable negotiation tactic but frustrating).

    4) Great-O-Khan is a work in progress to be sure but he already 100% better than he did in Rev Pro and the mere fact that he got a singles match with Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom is a sign that the office is high on him. Don’t read to much into the loss as Tanahashi rarely loses at the Dome unless it’s a star that is already on his level.

    5) Context on Ospreay v Okada: Okada wrestled Ospreay in Rev Pro in 2015 and handpicked him to the Jr Ace in his Chaos( that’s reality and kayfabe both) so Ospreay has been Okada’s protege/best buddy/ little brother for like 5 years in NJPW. The last 2.5 years Ospreay has been flirting with going Heavyweight full time and has faced off against Okada in singles matches across a G1 in 2019, NJC in 2019, and the Anniversary show in 2018 and he can’t beat Okada. Finally in the 2020 G1 Ospreay brought in Okhan and cheated to beat Okada and cost him a chance to win his G1 block on the last night. So it was stiff and brutal because it’s a personal grudge match.

    6) That about nails the Naito v Ibushi build but it’s a deeper context in terms of Ibushi’s story and relationship with Naito. Naito has known Ibushi since high school when they were apart of Animal Hamiguchi’s gym( lots of dudes like Shingo and Bushi were as well). Ibushi has come so close to winning the IWGP heavyweight title before but keeps losing the big one on the big stage( like last year) and he lost his title shot to White so the win is culmination of a long 5 year journey to the title( to much to get into here tbh). Also Naito has always given Ibushi shit because he left to do the CWC and bunch of silly wrestling in Japan in 2015 and 2016 when he should have been a main eventer in New Japan. So when these guys have fought since 2017 it tends to be a lot of dangerous high risk neck drop spots because of the “personal” animus.

5* Review KB. Better than any WWE review you have ever done.

I typically just watch New Japan highlights on YouTube but Jesus is every New Japan show 4-5 hrs?
