    Ok, here’s my take:

The buy in was a good appetizer for the crowd. You can tell when Matt freaking Hardy is over that the crowd is into it. Jungle Boy gets better and better every time I see him, as he’s gone from skinny comedy rookie to perhaps one of the top 5 straddling between the upper midcard and the low tier main event scene (I know it’s a stretch with all of the tiers but with such a large roster, until they split it somehow that’s the best way to keep track). Solid spotfest to start.

    Editor Disclaimer:
I was reading a 411 review and didn’t realize it was you until I realized you were one of the only ones who uses letter grades

The opener was a shockingly good choice, as the story is super easy to follow and Kingston has one of the most relatable characters in recent memory. I’m thinking this sets up a rematch at Grand Slam. That DDT near fall was great and I loved pinning Eddie instead of submitting him.

I didn’t know a whole lot about Kojima coming in other than he’s a legend in Japan and was the first MLW champion. That being said, Moxley did a great job getting us prepared and telling us his moves and his styles it made me more invested in the whole thing. That’s the issue with most Japanese stars coming into a big mainstream company: we never know anything about them but we’re expected to know how great they are. As you like to say, that doesn’t work for most fans. Maybe hardcore’s like us, but to my grandma who’s a casual viewer or my dad who only knows what is advertised and doesn’t search out of his way, it just misses. Excalibur also did a good job in listing accolades and making it seem like a big deal when Moxley eventually beat him. It was also cool to see Mox needing both versions of the PD to put him away, as it added to the “crazy old man” motif that Mox painted. Also, Mox used a wrestling counter to hit his finisher, which proves that he is a multi dimensional wrestler when motivated. I am a fan of Suzuki and have gone out of my way to watch his NJ work, so I’m excited to see them kill each other on national tv.

The biggest issue I have with women’s wrestling is very simple: the lack of character and lack of investment in the characters. So this match was a breath of fresh air in that respect. We know the girls can go. We know they’re athletic. We know they work hard. Statlander has a distinct character that everyone loves and gets people to pull for her. So then, when people talk about how great she is in the Ring, how athletic she is, how scary powerful she is, etc., we care that much more. Usually being the female version of your boyfriend would be a big knock, but Britt does it in a way that completely flips the script on it. She is arrogant, she’s conceited, she has an entourage, but people LOVE her. Scratch that… ADORE her. Why? It’s simple: she backs it up. She works hard. Her work ethic is second to none. She’s a damn dentist, which takes about 8 years of school. Wrestling training is time, energy and money consuming. She did them BOTH. That pop for the sunrise was pretty epic as well. Considering that these girls combined have MAYBE a decade of experience, this was a pretty awesome match. I also loved the story of Britt needing to go for the head cause Statlander was too strong for normal offense. It’s little thing like that that bump a match from “pretty good” to “great”.

I don’t think I’ve actually been this emotional over a title change in a long time. Eddie in 04, Hardy in 08 AJ in 09, Danielson in 14 and Kofi in 19 were the ones that sprung. I could feel myself just stop and enjoy it and just shut up when the count went down. The shot of Penta crying through the mask and the paint and the blood was a visual I’ll never forget. The match was awesome, even more than I expected which is crazy considering the bar I set. I can see arguments on why this wouldn’t be MOTY, but if you don’t think it’s in heavy consideration watch it again. I hate the Young Bucks. I really do. Not just their characters either. They’re generally just obnoxious pricks that coast on reputation. Hiwever, they absolutely brought it. Nick has a nasty looking gash. There was more psychology in this match alone than The Bucks have had in two years of matches with the company. The bit of Penta protecting his little brother was also top notch storytelling. Also, I have figured out why Fenix is ahead of most luchadores for me: his moves connect. A lot of Lucha guys go so fast that they miss moves a lot, which makes things so over convoluted. He is crazy accurate with everything. It also helps that the Lucha Brothers can wrestle multiple styles and can wrestle as both vicious heels and sympathetic faces. It gives them more upside than a lot of Champions. That crossbody looked fantastic, and it was made better that it directly led to the finish. A lot of big spots get wasted for shock and awe factor and they lose their steam. Incredible match!!!

I was sad Conti didn’t win (granted my monster crush on her may be the reason but I digress). However, Ruby was a nice moment and it’s amazing what happens when they listen to the crowd. Those two, Skye, Anna and Rosa all got really nice pops and the crowd loved the final two. That could be a hell of a singles match and overall I enjoyed the battle Royal!!

Well I came in thinking (and honestly wanting) Jericho was definitely gonna lose and I ended up popping for his win. Both guys are the reason for it, as MJF was his epic scumbaggy self and Jericho did well in making me want him to stick around. The psychology at the end was really good as well with the back playing into the finish. Also, one other point: it gives MJF a way to kick Wardlow out as he was the reason the extra refs were out there. That’s more storytelling that gets lost at times in wrestling today. Well done by both guys!

Darby and Punk honestly exceeded my expectations. Punk didn’t look rusty and actually by taking it slow looked more mature. Also, Darby essentially got himself caught at the end and makes him look like he was neck and neck the whole way. The sit up from the coffin drop made me chuckle and the mouse trap was a solid near fall. Really good!!!

All I’ll say about QT vs Paul was at least it was short.

The main event was actually pretty great I’d say, lack of drama aside. However, screw that cause ADAM COLE BAYBAY!!!! AND BRYAN FREAKING DANIELSON ARE HERE!!!! The tease before the joining the Elite was great and Cole just set up his first match against Jungle Boy, which should be pretty awesome!!! There are some dream match scenarios here and I’m pretty stoked for it!!! Hopefully Christian fades to the upper midcard now and everything is set for the next round of shows before Full Gear

One more point: the commentary was great tonight. Excalibur wasn’t a know it all and actually helped us with things we may not have known about people’s backgrounds. JR seems more motivated than he’s been in a good while. And Tony just letting his emotions out and saying what was needed to be said was cool.

Incredible show and I’m excited for Dynamite on Wednesday!!! I love how each match was pretty different (Insane opening tag, hoss fight, international strong style, styles clash, violent gimmick match, fun gimmick match with a debut, emotional rollercoaster, hometown hero return/thinking man’s match, filler, and main event style with an epic ending). Nothing was near bad (I could watch QT get choke slammed for a month and not be sick of it) and three awesome debuts, a return to form for one of the best all around talents ever, emotion, a historic title change, a hot crowd (complete with singing!!!) Everything clicked and while not every show will be perfect, I’m excited for the next few months. As long as Tony doesn’t get too cute this should be a fun ride.

Sorry about the long one KB! I hope you give me feedback on my thoughts as I’m trying to improve in any way I can!!!

Did Punks match feel flat to you? Crowd seemed exhausted (can’t blame them after that cage match. Feel like maybe they should have opened the show with Punk and Darby

Cm punk match was clearly at a slower pace which to me was ok. I bought the show and was happy for the pace as that’s how you tell a dialogue in the match. I think the crowd was so happy for him to be back BUT at the same time they also had respect for Allin. The thing that Aew does brilliantly when they do is they get the crowd invested when they do that. Sometimes they don’t
All out was just so full of surprises that the crowd was not burnt out but they just needed a breather but punk match was executed excellently Had a 90s vibe to it

    • Sebastian says:

Crowd was definitely hot for punk match but by main event they were kinda dead.
