ECW On Sci Fi – May 20, 2008: Get Somewhere Already

We are done with Judgment Day and that means very little around here, as the only ECW match saw ECW Champion Kane and CM Punk fail to win the Smackdown Tag Team Titles. I’m not sure what that is going to mean for the future, but Kane needs something better to do and soon. Let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

Armando Estrada is in the ring with CM Punk, Tommy Dreamer, John Morrison and Chavo Guerrero. One of them will get a shot against Kane at One Night Stand in a fatal four way Singapore Cane match. For tonight though, it’s a tag match.

Opening sequence.

Miz vs. Kane

Non-title. Here is Miz to talk about how banged up he is after Judgment Day, but he is a competitor so get his opponent out here. Kane kicks him in the face to start and cranks on Miz’s arm for daring to try slugging away. Miz is thrown outside for daring to get his boot up in the corner and Kane follows him to make it worse. A posting actually works for Miz an he gets in a few shots back inside. The cravate just seems to annoy Kane though so he powers out and kicks Miz in the face. There’s the top rope clothesline but Miz slips out of the chokeslam. That’s enough for Kane to unload in the corner, including tying Miz in the Tree of Woe. The upside down choking draws the DQ to give Miz the win.

Rating: C. This was more of an angle than a match as Kane loses due to destroying Miz. That being said, the result is another win for Miz, as he is building up a nice resume. Miz has come a long way in the last few months and it should be interesting to see where he goes from here. He seems to be putting in the effort and that is always worth a look.

Post match Kane unloads on Miz and loads up a Conchairto but John Morrison makes the save.

Kofi Kingston vs. Shelton Benjamin

Feeling out process to start, with Benjamin powering him into the corner for a clean break. Kingston winds up in an electric chair but rolls off for an armdrag to pick up the pace. Benjamin drops him onto the corner though and Kingston’s leg is busted up. The leg crank is on, as are the KOFI chants, though the latter slow down rather quickly. Back up and something close to a bodyscissors (headscissors around the torso) gets Kingston out of trouble. A dropkick gives Kofi two but the Boom Boom Boom is countered into a rollup for two and Benjamin grabs the half crab. The rope is grabbed so Benjamin hits Paydirt for the pin.

Rating: C. And that’s how Kofi’s undefeated streak ends. It’s a little weird to have him lose out of almost nowhere but the good thing is that Kofi hasn’t really been built up in a big way just yet. Benjamin beating Kofi isn’t a huge stretch, but I’m curious to see where Kofi goes from here, as he hasn’t really gone anywhere yet.

Colin Delaney/Kelly Kelly vs. Layla/Mike Knox

Layla jumps Kelly to start but Kelly skins the cat into a headscissors to put her on the floor. Back in and Kelly hits a spinning middle rope crossbody for two, with Knox making the save. Everything breaks down and Kelly hits a K2 (Rocker Dropper) for the fast pin.

Post match Knox lays out Delaney, which Adamle calls “pure evil”. As we get over that overreaction, here is Armando Estrada to say ring the bell.

Reverse layout DDT finishes Delaney in about fifteen seconds.

Raw Rebound.

One Night Stand rundown. Does it feel like they’re filling time here?

CM Punk/Tommy Dreamer vs. Chavo Guerrero/John Morrison

Dreamer’s headlock doesn’t get him very far so he goes with an armdrag to take Morrison down instead. Chavo comes in and gets taken down as well, allowing Punk to come in with the delayed vertical suplex. Back up and Chavo drives him into the corner so Morrison can come in. That’s fine with Punk, who kicks him in the head to take him down. Some quick double teaming puts Punk in the wrong corner, though his troubles there last all of three seconds.

Punk sends Chavo outside for a slingshot dive but Morrison sends him into the apron to take over. Back from a break with Morrison cranking on the arms before Chavo cranks on one arm and the chin. Morrison kicks him in the back but has to cut off Punk’s crawl to the corner. Another dive is cut off but Punk scores with the knee in the corner into the bulldog. That’s finally enough for the tag to Dreamer so house can be cleaned. Everything breaks down with Chavo and Punk crashing out to the floor. Back in and Chavo gets in a quick shot on Dreamer, setting up the frog splash for the pin.

Rating: C+. Pretty standard main event tag match here, even if the idea is to get us behind Chavo as a threat to go after Kane again. That feud is long since over and there is no reason to get invested in it again, so hopefully this is little more than a mislead so someone else can get the shot. Granted none of these people make the most interesting challenger (Punk would, but the ECW Title already seems beneath him), but even Morrison would be better than Chavo again.

Post match Big Show comes out and wrecks everyone before putting himself as the Singapore cane match. More wrecking ensues to end the show.

Overall Rating: C. ECW is very bleh right now and I don’t see the possibility of another Big Show vs. Kane showdown making it better. Punk seems like he is getting ready to leave and that doesn’t leave much in the way of star power. Throw in the seemingly never ending Estrada vs Delaney feud and some less than inspiring Benjamin vs. Kingston stuff and there isn’t much to get excited about around here. At least they’re trying something with Show, but that doesn’t feel like the longest term idea. Not a bad show, but they really need to pick something up.
