We’re closing in on Unforgiven and the big story continues to be HHH vs. the world. Steve Austin returned last week on Smackdown to nearly kill HHH with a semi truck and that means we might have the challenge for the pay per view in sight. Other than that, the rest of the company is as wacky as usual and that should make for an eventful night. Let’s get to it.

Here is Smackdown is you need a recap.

We look at Steve Austin attempting to murder HHH, who has quite a few people after him.

Opening sequence.

A bunch of people (Undertaker, Big Show, Kane, Mankind, Steve Austin) all seem to be looking for HHH.

Speaking of HHH, he gets a full police motorcade escort.

Here is Linda McMahon, with the Stooges, for a chat. Linda wastes no time in making a five way match tonight for the #1 contendership at Unforgiven. For now though, HHH has to remain champion and if Steve Austin wants a title shot, he can have it. Tonight. Cue HHH and Chyna (with security) to interrupt and things are not looking positive. HHH goes on a rant about how Linda is screwing him over but HHH tells her how things go. Cue Big Show, Undertaker, Rock, Mankind and Kane for a brawl, with HHH escaping.

We recap Jeff Jarrett attacking Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young on Smackdown.

Jarrett issues an open challenge to any woman.

The Rock, with Mankind, talks about how he is back in Anaheim and is ready to face anyone to get to HHH. This includes Mankind, even if they are friends. Mankind is ready to have feelings but he’s ready for Rock to beat him up.

Jeff Jarrett vs. ???

Miss Kitty and Debra are here with Jarrett and it’s….Luna Vachon answering the challenge. Luna charges in and gets stomped down to start, followed by a shot to the face. Jarrett hammers away in the corner but cue Ivory to hit Luna with a guitar for the DQ.

Post match Jarrett does not like Lilian Garcia announcing Luna as the winner so he puts Garcia in the Figure Four.

Chyna is not impressed with Jarrett and threatens Steve Austin with a sledgehammer.

Faarooq vs. D-Von Dudley

Strap match, just because. Faarooq starts fast and snaps off a powerslam before choking with the strap. D-Von fights back and chokes away, followed by some nasty whipping. Back up and the spinebuster gets Faarooq out of trouble, only for Bubba to hit a nasty chair to the head to give D-Von the pin.

Post match Bradshaw gets taken out with the steps but comes back with a chair to clear out the Dudleyz.

Undertaker and Big Show are ready to take out HHH, who is now the hunted instead of the hunter. Even the Crocodile Hunter can’t save them now. As for Rock, they’re going to be on him like the leather pants on the girl in the front row. This is a weird version of Undertaker and hopefully it doesn’t last long.

Jim Ross brings out the British Bulldog for a chat. Last week he gave Al Snow the Hardcore Title back because Snow deserves it. He’s also back because he wants to show that he can still do this after his injury. There is only one belt that he has left to win and that is the WWF Title. That’s the one thing he wants to win before he retires, which won’t be for a long time.

Cue the Big Boss Man to interrupt because he did not like Bulldog interrupting him last week. Before this is over between them, Bulldog is going home in a doggy bag. Cue Al Snow (he’s barking) to sing about where oh where has his Boss Man gone. Snow: “There you are Ray!” Snow recaps the Pepper saga and challenges him to a match, which will involve a cage inside the Cell, but Boss Man is only interested if the Hardcore Title is on the line. Snow says sure, so Boss Man is in, but also ready to fight tonight.

One more thing though: Snow introduces some rottweilers who will be in between the two cages. Bulldog jumps Boss Man from behind and they fight at ringside with Boss Man getting the better of things, only to be chased off by the dogs. You could hear them trying to make sense of this as they were explaining the concept and it was showing badly. No one could make this sound good, as it’s a total mess.

The Mean Street Posse, with Terri, doesn’t like Test so they’re going to beat him up, even if Shane McMahon doesn’t want them to. Oh and Stephanie McMahon is a tramp.

Someone has attacked Shane McMahon.

Tony Chimmel comes out to take over for the Fink.

Joey Abs vs. Test

The rest of the Posse is here too and they all ump Test before the bell, allowing Joey to grab a suplex for an early two. Test gets in a shot of his own though and the comeback is on. A full nelson slam puts Abs down but the Posse comes in again. That’s broken up and Test grabs a powerbomb for the fast pin.

Post match the beatdown is on again but Shane McMahon runs in for the save. The Posse is chased outside with Shane and Test giving chase in their car.

WWF Title: Steve Austin vs. HHH

Austin, in street clothes, is challenging. Hold on though as HHH is in street clothes as well and has some cops (and Chyna) with him. HHH brings up the aggravated assault from Smackdown and has personally signed a warrant for Austin’s arrest (I don’t think that’s how warrants work). The cops handcuff and arrest Austin, with HHH getting a cheap shot because of course. No match if that wasn’t clear.

Post break Austin is put in a police car and HHH takes Linda McMahon’s phone and throws it down.

Godfather vs. Chaz

Apparently Chaz and Marianna have amicably ended their relationship, so Godfather isn’t going to offer him the ladies this week. Chaz takes him down with a drop toehold to start and works on the arm as the ladies dance and shout a lot on the floor. Some arm cranking ensues but cue Marianna (wit a black eye) to ask Chaz why. Godather isn’t happy and kicks him into the corner, setting up the Ho Train (but an angry one you see), followed by the Pimp Drop for the pin. That’s not a place you want to go with a wrestling storyline and it doesn’t feel great here.

The Stooges try to get Linda McMahon to leave but she’s staying because it’s family business.

We recap X-Pac and Kane going their separate ways.

A cage is lowered and here is Chris Jericho, but believe it or not he has something to say. Jericho calls out Ken Shamrock, who is certainly a SHAM, but he certainly doesn’t work. This is the Jericho Prison and he is ready to prove himself against one of the most proficient fighters in the world. This brings out GOTCH GRACIE, a masked man who has trained everywhere (Lawler: “JR, you probably know where he played college football!”).

Chris Jericho vs. Gotch Gracie

Gracie is in a mask and all black, with his shirt saying GOTCH. Jericho (“Here goes nothing!”) takes him down for a bow and arrow beore grabbing the mic and saying that could have broken his back. Jericho puts on an Octopus Hold and muscles him over for a suplex, with Jericho saying that’s enough. Gracie fights back with a clothesline but gets pulled into the Liontamer for the fast pin.

Post match Jericho goes for an ankle lock but Ken Shamrock runs in. Jericho and Gracie beat Shamrock down and Gracie is unmasked as….Curtis (Mr.) Hughes. That’s not the best reveal but you know exactly what you’re getting with Hughes.

D’Lo Brown and Godfather have a business transaction.

Chris Jericho shows he just proved that he is the most dangerous man in the WWF. He went out and got Curtis Hue to protect Shamrock from Jericho himself.

Kane vs. Mankind vs. Big Show vs. Undertaker vs. The Rock

For a title shot at Unforgiven and for some reason Undertaker and Show are introduced with a combined weight. The two of them jump Mankind before everyone else get here but argue over the pin. Rock and Kane come out as well with Kane hitting the top rope clothesline on Mankind.

Cue Mideon and Viscera to jump Mankind as this is just a big brawl rather than much of a match. Mankind manages a double arm DDT on Kane but Undertaker drops the referee. Rock gives Undertaker a DDT into the People’s Elbow as another referee comes in, only to get taken out by Kane.

More referees and agents come in and get decked as well, followed by Earl Hebner, who throws up his hands and leaves. Cue the Godfather to go after Undertaker (it goes badly), Crash Holly to go after Big Show (it goes worse) and more people who are beaten up just as quickly. The locker room empties out and everyone starts fighting with everyone as this is thrown out.

Rating: C. What is there to say about something like this? It’s barely a match and is much more about a bunch of people brawling before even more people come in to brawl as well. That doesn’t get you very far, but it was certainly energetic. And we still don’t even have a #1 contender as the lack of organization continues.

And no, that isn’t the main event, because it’s 1999.

The referees tell Earl Hebner to do something about these beatings they’re taking.

Val Venis/D’Lo Brown vs. Mark Henry/Steve Blackman

This feels like it belongs on a Lethal Lottery show. Well hang on as Henry isn’t here so Blackman bets up Venis on his own. Venis fights back and hands it off to Brown, who misses an elbow and gets caught with a dropkick. It’s back to Venis for a spinebuster but Blackman hits an enziguri for two more. Venis is right back with a fisherman’s suplex into the Low Down for the fast pin. It’s almost weird to see a straight match with nothing screwy going on.

The screwiness is after the match as GTV pops on to show Henry getting a lap dance from Godfather’s ladies.

A limousine, with a police escort, arrives.

WWF Title: HHH vs. ???

HHH, in street clothes and with Chyna, is defending and calls out Linda McMahon of all people. HHH wants Linda to say that Steve Austin has forfeited his title shot and has to start all the way at the bottom again. Linda: “No.” That has HHH ready to go after Linda but cue Vince McMahon to make the save. Vince says he gave his word that he wouldn’t interfere in business, but this is personal.

They’re ready to fight so here is Austin (also in street clothes and again, I don’t think this company knows how the legal system works) to start the brawl, and apparently the match, with HHH. Austin beats him around the ring and into the crowd, setting up a suplex on the floor. A bunch of chair shots and a right hand to Earl Hebner are enough to get Austin disqualified.

Rating: C. This was an angle rather than a match (I’m shocked too) and that’s all it needed to be. Austin being back in the arena so soon after a big angle earlier means it should have been a brawl like this, but that’s quite the match to just burn off in three minutes. Either way, the fans were going nuts and I guess that’s what matters the most?

Post match the cage is lowered and Austin beats HHH up both inside and outside to end the show.

We get about five extra minutes, called Extra Attitude, of Austin beating on HHH even more and drinking beer. Real revolutionary stuff there, though the cage is kind of swinging back and forth for a weird feeling.

Overall Rating: C. They were trying to have something coherent here but it was just enough of a mixture of the Russo style of insanity with something more focused. The overarching story of “everyone is out to get HHH and tonight is Austin’s chance” is fine, but there are so many moving parts that you need a scorecard. It kept my interest, though it had the usual problem of feeling like they had three weeks piled into two hours. Calm the heck down and see how much better the show can be. You can even keep the matches short, but let something sink in for once.

Dynamite
Date: October 8, 2024
Location: Spokane Arena, Spokane, Washington
Commentators: Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, Jeff Jarrett

It’s Title Tuesday, this year featuring a grand total of one title match. Other than that, it’s also the last Dynamite before this weekend’s WrestleDream, which isn’t exactly looking great. The show could use a nice boost this week and the likely tag team main event will aim to do just that. Let’s get to it.

Here is Collision if you need a recap.

Jon Moxley talks about how no one wants to take Bryan Danielson out, so Moxley will have to do it himself. You have all of these people playing with their toys and living in a fantasy world. In the real world, Danielson being backed into a corner is a terrifying thing. With his world closing in around him, Danielson will accept his inner darkness but Moxley isn’t scared of anything. He hopes Danielson understands one day but for right now, the stakes are too high.

Danielson says tonight isn’t his last match on Dynamite and tonight he’s going to kick Claudio Castagnoli’s head in.

Here is Darby Allin for a chat and he wastes no time in calling out Brody King. Cue King, with Allin saying King could have accepted the challenge a bit more nicely. Allin goes on about how he got King a job here and King has done a lot of the same things he has done. They’ve both bought houses and let their fathers retire, but Allin is the face of the company. King snaps and rants about how Allin is too risky so Allin tells him to finish him off. The fight is on and Allin hits him in the face with a rock (yes a rock) and King is busted open before they’re separated.

Jake Roberts (hey he still works here) is in the back with Lance Archer when Don Callis comes in. Callis says he and Roberts have complete a talent exchange, with Archer now being part of the Don Callis Family. This seems to be cool with Archer, though Roberts won’t say who he got in exchange.

Daniel Garcia is back and will give us an update on his future in the ring.

Hologram vs. Komander

They fight over wrist control to start and trade armdrags and then come up to a standoff. Hologram sends him outside and hits a heck of a suicide dive for a drive into the barricade. Back in and Hologram kicks him down for two as commentary talks about Taz undergoing knee replacement surgery. A Muta lock is broken up and Hologram gets two off a snap suplex as we take a break.

Back with Komander hitting a rather springboardy hurricanrana, setting up a big running step up flip dive to the floor. They get back in with Hologram hitting a middle rope reverse Spanish Fly to leave them both down again. Hologram’s 450 hits knees so Komander tries the rope walk but has to reverse a hurricanrana into a powerbomb (that didn’t look great but they did a nice job with the save). Back up and Hologram grabs a poisonrana, followed by the torture rack helicopter bomb for the pin at 11:57.

Rating: B. This is pretty much what you get from Hologram most of the time but moving him over to Dynamite is a change of pace. It was an entertaining match and he has been undefeated for a few months now, but it is time for some kind of a feud to start up. You can only get so much out of this kind of match and he is pretty much at the end of the rope for what he has been doing.

Post match Jake Roberts is on the stage as Rush, Dralistico and The Beast Mortos come in to beat down Komander and Hologram. The trio raise a fist and Roberts does the same. So that’s the trade and…yeah Roberts got the much better end of the deal.

Mark Briscoe, being much more serious than usual, says Chris Jericho has gone too far. It’s not about the title at WrestleDream, because Briscoe is going to hurt him.

Here is Daniel Garcia for his big announcement. Garcia thanks Tony Khan for giving him the chance and now he is going to be sticking around on a new contract. This is the start of a new Garcia, which starts with him picking up some gold.

Video on Swerve Strickland, with MVP and Prince Nana fighting over getting to be his manager. Swerve will be back at WrestleDream, with MVP and Shelton Benjamin shown watching in the back.

Mercedes Mone and Kamille aren’t worried about Emi Sakura tonight.

Daniel Garcia celebrates with some people, including Katsuyori Shibata, who seems interested in giving Garcia a title shot after he wins the TNT Title.

Willow Nightingale vs. Saraya vs. Nyla Rose vs. Jamie Hayter

For a Women’s Title shot against Mariah May, on commentary, at WrestleDream, Harley Cameron is here with Saraya and Rose is replacing an ill Britt Baker. Saraya gets chased out to the floor to start, leaving Hayter to take out the other two inside. Rose is back up to wreck them for a bit, only to have Cameron and Saraya come back in to clear the ring. Rose goes up and dives onto everyone for the big crash as we take a break.

Back with Hayter hitting a backbreaker on Rose but Saraya breaks it up. It’s Hayter up first to slug away and suplexes the non-Sarayas at the same time. Saraya grabs a chair but Hayter takes it away and unloads on her. Cue the returning Penelope Ford to take the chair away as well and lure Hayter to the back (May: “Aww shucks.”). Rose goes up but Cameron shoves her down and it’s table time. Saraya Nightcaps Nightingale for two but Nightingale Death Valley Drivers her through a table for the pin at 11:25.

Rating: C+. It was going to be Nightingale or Baker in the first place so this is a logical way to go. That being said, there was WAY too much going on here with interference and a table and all that jazz and it hurt things a bit. At the same time, I was disappointed with May, who was sounding bored on commentary here. Compare it to her awesome time calling a match on Collision a week or so ago and it’s a night and day difference.

Post match May headbutts Nightingale down and beats on her with the belt.

The Learning Tree talks to Rocky Romero and suggest that he is just a lackey to the Conglomeration.

Jay White vs. Cody Chhun

Juice Robinson is here with White, who shoulders Chhun down but walks into a dropkick. A DDT gives Chhun two but White is back up with a hard clothesline. White suplexes him into the corner and hits a swinging Rock Bottom, followed by the Bladerunner for the fast pin at 2:52.

Post match White says Hangman Page is the first of two wrongs he needs to correct. After that, it’s time for the World Title, but he wants Page at WrestleDream.

Hook wants to know who attacked his father and runs into the Patriarchy. Christian Cage says they’re both family men and while Cage has lost Luchasaurus to a medical condition, he feels sorry for Hook losing his father.

Willow Nightingale jumps Mariah May and promises to win the Women’s Title on Saturday.

TBS Title/NJPW Women’s Strong Title: Mercedes Mone vs. Emi Sakura

Mone is defending and has Kamille in her corner. Mone takes her down to start and does her dance but gets thrown into the corner. Sakura gets sent into the corner as well but fires back with some rapid fire chops. A quick knockdown to the floor lets Mone hit some knees off the apron though and we take a break.

Back with Mone’s Backstabber connecting for two, followed by the running knees in the corner. Another Meteora off the apron misses though and Sakura hits a running splash against the barricade. Sakura crossbodies Mone and Kamille against the barricade, followed by a butterfly backbreaker back inside but Mone rolls to the apron. That’s enough for Kamille to get in a cheap shot, setting up the Statement Maker (as in the Bank Statement, which is FAR better than the Mone Maker) for the tap at 10:12.

Rating: C+. I’m well aware that Sakura is a legend (commentary made sure to tell us that over and over) but she’s never meant much of anything in AEW. She hasn’t wrestled a match here in almost six months and hasn’t won anything televised in about a year and a half. If you want her to be in this match and for her to feel like a serious challenger, you might try something more than “she won a match in Japan a week or so ago to get this shot”.

Post match the beatdown is on but Kris Statlander runs in for the save.

Stokely Hathaway offers his services to Private Party, who turn him down because they are on their own for the first time in five years. They’re ready for the Young Bucks too.

Tony Schiavone brings in Will Ospreay for a chat. Ospreay thinks Don Callis was behind Konosuke Takeshita interrupting his title match last week and wants a chat (his words). Cue Callis for a hug but Ospreay isn’t having that. Callis says last week was difficult for him emotionally and brings up some of their history together. Ospreay doesn’t want to hear that and point blank asks if Callis sent Takeshita to attack him. Callis: “You don’t need to know that!”

Eventually Callis admits that he sent Ospreay out to learn who is really in charge of the Family. Ospreay talks about how Callis keeps messing things up because he won’t leave people alone. Maybe Callis needs to throw Ospreay out of the Family (Wasn’t he out of the Family months ago?).

Ospreay says they’re done and goes after Callis but Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher run in for the save. Fletcher tries to talk Ospreay down and Takeshita grabs a suplex on Ospreay. Callis pulls out the screwdriver but Fletcher won’t do it. Instead Takeshita drops Ospreay again but here is Ricochet for the save. It’s good to make Callis a clear cut heel again, though I’m still not sure how you can throw someone off a team twice.

Top Flight is ticked off at not getting the Tag Team Title shot but Action Andretti yells at them for not being fired up enough. Leila Grey yells at Andretti, who says they don’t get it and walks away.

Jack Perry wants Katsuyori to be violent, so bring it at WrestleDream.

Bryan Danielson/Wheeler Yuta vs. Claudio Castagnoli/Pac

Danielson starts with Pac but kicks Castagnoli off the apron. Everything breaks down and the good guys hit stereo dives to the floor. Back in and Danielson holds Pac in place for a running dropkick from Yuta. Pac sends Danielson into the corner though and Castagnoli comes in to stomp away. That’s broken up and Danielson flips away, allowing Yuta to come in for a German suplex to Pac. Cattle Mutilation is broken up and the villains take over as we take a break.

Back with Yuta superkicking Pac out of the air to leave both of them down. Castagnoli cuts Yuta off and tries to yell at him, only to get his finger bitten as a result. Danielson comes in and strikes away in the corner before snapping off a super hurricanrana. Pac comes back in and gets taken down as well, with Danielson stomping away. A big kick to the head drops Castagnoli but cue Jon Moxley and Marina Shafir for a distraction. Castagnoli hits Swiss Death to set up Pac’s 450 for two. Yuta takes a hammer from Pac, allowing Danielson to pull him into the LeBell Lock for the tap at 15:19.

Rating: B. Other than Danielson looking a bit superheroish near the end, this was a solid main event tag match and Danielson gets a boost on the way to the title match. I’m not sure what this means for the Trios Titles, but points for not going with what felt like an obvious Yuta turn. As for Yuta, he still feels in over his head, but he does at least tie into this story.

Post match Moxley and Danielson fight to the back as the other three beat down Yuta. Castagnoli hits Yuta in the ribs with the hammer until Danielson beats Moxley into the ring. Danielson saves Yuta and poses to end the show. So Danielson just beat up Pac, Castagnoli and (a fresh) Moxley singlehandedly but he’s supposed to be in any kind of danger on Saturday?

Overall Rating: B. Lack of a focus on titles on a show called TITLE TUESDAY aside (there has been one Dynamite since the beginning of September with no title matches so it’s not even that special of a concept), this show did a nice job of boosting up WrestleDream. I’m still not wild on a lot of what they’re offering on Saturday, but they did focus on that show here, even adding some more stuff to the card. That’s a good way to go for this Dynamite and it was a pretty easy watch throughout. It’s not a show that you needed to watch, but it’s a show that WrestleDream needed and that’s more important.

NXT

Location: The Factory At The District, Chesterfield, Missouri

It’s the second straight week on the road as we are close enough to St. Louis for a pretty big show. There are two title matches this week, plus Randy Orton will be facing Je’Von Evans, which feels like a way to have the biggest RKO imaginable. Well at least the biggest involving Evans. Let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

We open with a long recap of last week’s debut on the CW, including Trick Williams regaining the NXT Title.

Here is Trick Williams to get things going. He’s excited to become Tricky Two Times (nope) but there are sharks coming for the title. Cue Wes Lee in the crowd, saying he is coming to become a triple crown champion. Williams isn’t impressed, but Lee promises to leave him in the dust “like his father did”. Cue Jey Uso to interrupt and the place goes coconuts. Williams is rather pleased and doesn’t think anyone is coming for them.

Kelani Jordan/Bianca Belair/Jade Cargill vs. Fatal Influence

Everything breaks down fast and Fatal Influence is triple slammed out to the floor so the heroes can pose. Back in and Belair hammers on Henley in the corner before cutting off an interfering Jayne. Cargill comes in for a double hiptoss before press slamming Jordan onto Henley for two. A cheap shot cuts Jordan off though and we take a break.

Back with Jayne missing a Cannonball to Jordan. A belly to back suplex doesn’t work either and it’s Cargill coming in to clean house. House is quickly cleaned and a chokeslam plants Nyx. Cargill hits a Dominator to drop Belair onto Nyx for two as Jayne makes the save. Everything breaks down and Jordan kind of hits a moonsault to take out Henley and Jayne. Belair blocks a running knee from Nyx and faceplants her down. The assisted wheelbarrow suplex sets up One Of A Kind to give Jordan the pin at 12:07.

Rating: C+. This was little more than a way to get Jordan in the ring with some bigger stars and that worked out rather well. What matters the most here is getting Jordan over as a bigger star and having her rub elbows with top names. Fatal Influence is still going to be around and still won’t feel important, but they’re still fine in their current roles.

Nathan Frazier and Axiom argue over whether Je’Von Evans s faster than Frazier, with Randy Orton not caring. Orton says Frazier being kind of a hot head isn’t a bad thing.

Giulia is interrupted by someone we don’t see, but Giulia refers to them as “my old friend”.

Here is Roxanne Perez to laugh about how she is still the Women’s Champion while everyone else is disappointed. Then someone else will be built up and Perez can drink their tears again. Now one of her old friends is back so cue Cora Jade to join her. Jade did not like being forgotten while she was gone so now it’s time to make everyone pay for forgetting her. Even Perez was surprised last week and now it’s time to take care of everyone. Cue Giulia to interrupt, with Stephanie Vaquer joining her. The fight is on and the villains are cleared out, with Vaquer and Giulia holding up the title.

The No Quarter Catch Crew is ready for Vaquer next week and then run into Lexis King, who says Oro Mensah stole a win from him last week. King is thinking of a match where Mensah can’t cheat and wonders if the Crew has an idea. They settle on the idea of a Gentleman’s Duel, with specifics to be specified.

North American Title: Oba Femi vs. Tony D’Angelo

D’Angelo, with the Family, is challenging. Femi powers him around to start and grabs a headlock to grind away. D’Angelo fights up and hits a clothesline to the floor, where Femi plants him hard onto the apron as we take a break. Back with Femi bending D’Angelo’s back over his knee but D’Angelo powers his way out.

A Cactus Clothesline puts both of the on the floor, where Femi goes after the family. That doesn’t work for D’Angelo, who suplexes Femi onto the ramp for the big crash. Back in and D’Angelo plants him down for two, only to walk into a chokeslam for an even nearer two. Some clotheslines miss for Femi though and D’Angelo rolls some German suplexes.

Femi throws him right back down though and they both need a breather. A middle rope elbow sends D’Angelo outside again, where he spinebusters Femi through the announcers’ table. Back in and another spinebuster gives D’Angelo a very near fall so Femi grabs him by the throat. Another chokeslam is countered into a sunset flip to give D’Angelo the pin and the title at 13:59.

Rating: B. These two have chemistry together but dang that’s a bold move to have anyone go over Femi clean. D’Angelo got a big reaction for the win and I like the idea of him having a big moment, but Femi has felt like an absolute beast and then he loses here. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Femi on the main roster sooner than later, but him coming after the NXT Title would certainly be in the cards as well.

The big celebration is on as Femi looks rather surprised.

Last week, Lola Vice and Jaida Parker argued after their tag match.

Vice demands Ava give Parker a match but Nikkita Lyons interrupts. Vice isn’t impressed and a match seems likely.

Tag Team Titles: A-Town Down Under vs. Axiom/Nathan Frazier

Axiom and Frazier are defending. Frazier and Waller start things off with the champs taking over early on. Everything breaks down and Waller is sent outside, only for Theory to knock Axiom outside as well. We take a break and come back with Axiom in trouble but Frazier gets in a forearm to Waller on the outside. Axiom knocks Theory down though and hits a top rope splash, allowing the tag back to Frazier. The pace picks up and a double DDT plants the challenges.

Everything breaks down and Theory hits a spinning faceplant for two on Frazier. Axiom pulls Waller into a rear naked choke and Frazier guillotines Theory at the same time. Theory muscles his way out and drops Frazier onto the other two for the save. The villains almost collide but Axiom hits the Golden Ratio on Theory. A Canadian Destroyer knocks Waller silly, setting up the phoenix splash to retain the titles at 11:18.

Rating: B-. Another nice match here, even with Frazier and Axiom’s issues continuing. I’m not sure if or when they’re going to split but it’s kind of gotten to the point where it wouldn’t make sense for them to break up. They still need some new challengers from NXT though, as this was a pretty short term set of imports.

Holland is glad about what he has done but Riley Osborne runs in for the brawl.

Sexxy Red performs until Ethan Page interrupts. This place has fallen apart since he lost the title, including a wannabe concert. Cue Je’Von Evans to clear Page out.

A woman in red is coming, with something of a Walking Dead style vignette.

Randy Orton vs. Je’Von Evans

Feeling out process to start as the fans are rather pleased to have Orton here. Orton works on the arm before knocking Evans’ springboard out of the air (with a little finger wag for some flavor). Evans gets in a shot of his own though and Orton is knocked outside as we take a break.

Back with Evans’ dive being cut off, setting up a heck of a drop onto the announcers’ table. Orton does stop to fix the table and offers an apology…then drops Evans three more times. Back in and Evans manages to hit a springboard clothesline and strikes Orton down for two. A springboard cutter is blocked though and Orton snaps off the powerslam (more a belly to belly this time) for two.

Evans kicks him down again and now the huge top rope cutter gets two. Evans goes up and tries something, only to dive…well not into but next to the RKO, which didn’t come close (to be fair, it was a hard one to pull off). Thankfully Orton hits a regular one for the pin at 10:56.

Rating: C+. This wasn’t a match built around who was going to win, but rather about what kind of things Evans could do before losing to the RKO. They did botch the ending sequence, but it was a rather complicated setup and thankfully they didn’t panic and just did something simple to end it. Evans got in some good stuff here before the only realistic ending and that’s fine.

Orton shows respect.

Ava makes a #1 contenders match between Ethan Page, Wes Lee and Je’Von Evans, with the winner getting the title shot at Halloween Havoc.

Overall Rating: C+. NXT has only done so much since coming over to the CW, as the shows have been built as a big deal but have only done so much. This week felt a bit less interesting than last week, but now things can start getting going towards Halloween Havoc as they head back to Full Sail. Good enough show this week, but only Femi vs. D’Angelo is worth a look.

Monday Night Raw

We’re done with Bad Blood and the big story saw CM Punk defeat Drew McIntyre inside the Cell in a bloody and brutal match. Tonight we start the build towards Crown Jewel, where the world champions will be facing off in a title for a big green belt. Other than that, we have two title matches tonight so let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

Rapper Sexxy Red welcomes us to the show.

Bad Blood recap.

Here is a banged up CM Punk with a bunch of bandages for a chat from the stage. It’s good to be not dead in St. Louis but he’s in no condition to walk towards that ring. He doesn’t feel like he’s alive or like he won. That match made him feel like he isn’t sure what is next and he just doesn’t know right now. There are three groups of people to thank: his fans, his peers and the people who don’t like him at all.

There is a thin line between love and hate and he has turned their hatred into cash. He hasn’t seen his wife in about five weeks and he’s going home. As he goes to leave, here is Seth Rollins to cut him off with the wordless staredown. Punk leaves without incident, likely until just after WWE gets back from Saudi Arabia next month.

Rollins wishes Punk to get well soon, because the faster he gets back, the faster Rollins can beat him up for good. He’s been gone for a few weeks and things have gone all crazy. What matters is that he is back to destroy Bronson Reed, who isn’t here tonight. Rollins gets close to the camera and says Reed has made himself so crazy that Rollins knows his name. Anytime anyplace, because Rollins will be expecting him. Jey Uso interrupts for his scheduled title match and some staring ensues.

Intercontinental Title: Xavier Woods vs. Jey Uso

Woods, with Kofi Kingston, is challenging. Uso sends him into the corner to start and hits a quick enziguri before they fight on the apron. A knee sends Uso outside and Woods adds an AA on the floor as we take a break. Back with Uso hammering away but they trade running shots to the face. Woods gets the better of things but the Limit Breaker is cut off with a superkick. The Superfly Splash retains clean at 6:32. Not enough shown to rate but it was a pretty run of the mill match.

Post match Kingston offers Uso respect but Woods won’t respect either of them. With New Day leaving, Kingston comes in to make a save but Breakker spears him down. Woods stays on the floor and gets speared as well.

Rhea Ripley isn’t surprised that Liv Morgan cheated to keep her title but all that Morgan did was delay the inevitable.

We get the burning letters/symbols tease again.

Bron Breakker has nothing to say about what he did.

We look at the announcement of the Crown Jewel Title, which will see the men’s and women’s world champions facing off in non-title matches.

In an incident that happened after Bad Blood, Kevin Owens turned on Cody Rhodes. HHH has said they will handle the matter internally.

Cody Rhodes is apparently here…but technical issues abound.

Video on Sheamus vs. Pete Dunne.

Miz and Karrion Kross are in the back (with Wyatt Sicks interference) when R-Truth comes in. Truth makes it clear that he is NOT in the Judgment Day, but Miz doesn’t want to hear it. They can fight next week.

Sheamus vs. Pete Dunne

Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook so there are themed weapons provided on the floor. Sheamus jumps him to start and slugs away before putting the shillelagh across Dunne’s mouth for some cranking. They head outside with Sheamus’ Brogue Kick hitting a barrel by mistake. Dunne sends him into various things and stomps on Sheamus’ hand on the bar. Sheamus is back up with a slam onto the announcers’ table and we take a break.

Back with Sheamus hitting him in the ribs with the shillelagh but the ten forearms to the chest are broken up. The Brogue Kick misses so Sheamus settles for a powerslam. Dunne catches him on top though and a superplex gives Dunne two. They go outside and climb onto some barrels, where Sheamus fires off the forearms to the chest.

White Noise from the barrels through a table knocks Dunne silly, followed by a High Cross for two back inside. Dunne snaps the fingers though and hits him in the back with a cricket bat for two. With nothing else working, Dunne finds some zip ties in the bar and ties Sheamus’ hands behind his back. He doesn’t tie the legs though and Sheamus hits the Brogue Kick for the pin at 12:58.

Rating: B. Sometimes the most entertaining thing you can have on a wrestling show is two guys beating the fire out of each other for awhile. That’s all you had here and it absolutely worked. Sheamus gets a win in I guess what passes as his signature match while Dunne…well at least he isn’t called Butch anymore.

Cody Rhodes is here to see what he’ll have to do to win the Crown Jewel Title. Sami Zayn comes in to say he’d love to face Rhodes at Crown Jewel. Rhodes wishes him luck.

We look back at Braun Strowman defeating Bronson Reed last week.

Raquel Rodriguez drove into the arena earlier, with Liv Morgan and Dominik Mysterio in the back. Morgan laughed over Rhea Ripley still not winning the title and then they all left. No word on if Rodriguez is officially part of the Judgment Day.

NXT GM Ava is here with Adam Pearce when former NXT Champion Ethan Page shows up. Page doesn’t like what CM Punk did last week in his NXT Title match when Sexxy Red shows up, with Page being ignored. I have no idea what Red adds to the show but it isn’t anything valuable.

Unholy Union/Pure Fusion Collective vs. Kayden Carter/Katana Chance/Natalya/Zelina Vega/Lyra Valkyria

Stark gets in a kick to the face to start and it’s a big brawl as everything breaks down in a hurry. The fight heads outside with Natalya being sent into the steps as we take a break. Back with Natalya crawling over for the tag to Vega so house can be cleaned. Vega stomps on Deville and we hit the parade of knockdowns. Valkyria hits a top rope ax kick to pin Deville at 7:12.

Rating: C. This suffered from the same problem that all such matches do, as there is no way for anyone to stand out in the slightest. They had ten women fighting for just about seven minutes. How much is anyone supposed to get out of that kind of a match? Hopefully Valkyria can use the win to get back on track, as she certainly needs the boost.

Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill are ready to face Damage CTRL next week.

Raw World Title: Gunther vs. Sami Zayn

Zayn is challenging. Feeling out process to start but Zayn sends him outside in a hurry and we take an early break. Back with Gunther still staggered but being able to chop Zayn out of the air to take over again. Zayn can’t hit a Blue Thunder Bomb so Gunther tries the sleeper, only to get caught with the Blue Thunder Bomb for two.

We take another break and come back with Zayn hitting an exploder suplex against the barricade. The Helluva Kick against the barricade rocks Gunther again and Zayn throws him back inside for another one. Gunther pops out of the corner with a hard lariat for two though, only for Zayn to small package him for two more. The powerbomb gets a very near fall but Gunther grabs the sleeper. Zayn tries to fight up but gets pulled into the bodyscissors so Gunther can retain at 16:44.

Rating: B+. This was a heck of a fight which could have been that much better if they cut out the two breaks. Zayn is at his best when he is fighting from underneath and making you wonder just how much he can overcome. That’s what we got here, while Gunther got his revenge after Wrestlemania. Gunther being in there made it feel that much better and I was pulled in here.

Cody Rhodes comes out for a staredown to end the show.

Overall Rating: B. I can’t get over what a relief it was to have this show be an hour shorter. There was never a time where it felt like they were trying to fill in time and that is a great thing to see. Hopefully they can keep up this momentum, but Gunther vs. Rhodes for a meaningless, one night only title doesn’t exactly intrigue me. Other than that, solid show here with two very good matches, which stood out more with less filler surrounding them.

This is a special show as Hurricane Helene knocked out the planned television tapings, meaning we are in for a Best Of Show. In this case it’s the Best Of Bound For Glory, which is appropriate as we are just over three weeks away from this year’s edition. We might get some quick promos to go with that though so let’s get to it.

Note that I’ll be posting the full versions of the matches, omitting any edits on this week’s broadcast.

From 2022.

X-Division Title: Frankie Kazarian vs. Mike Bailey

Bailey is defending and after a quick handshake, we’re ready to go. They trade some early rollups for two each before Bailey has to bail to the ropes to avoid the chickenwing. A dropkick sets up another failed chickenwing attempt so Bailey sends him outside for the moonsault to the floor. Back in and Kazarian knocks him off the top for a crash to the floor as the pace slows. Kazarian starts in on the leg, which never works on Bailey.

Bailey fights up and hits a kick to the chest, setting up the bouncing kicks into the running corkscrew shooting star press. Kazarian gets up this time and hits Back To The Future (electric chair bridged back into a rollup) for two before they knock each other down for a breather. Back up and Bailey kicks him in the face, setting up the standing moonsault knees. The Ultimate Weapon gets two and Bailey is stunned. The Flamingo Driver is countered into the chickenwing, which is broken up just as fast.

Kazarian misses a charge and falls to the floor, where Bailey is waiting on him with the top rope Asai moonsault. That’s shrugged off though as Kazarian comes back in with a slingshot cutter for his own near fall. The Flux Capacitor (super Spanish Fly) gives Kazarian two but another Back To The Future is countered into a poisonrana. Bailey goes up for another Ultimate Weapon but gets pulled into another cutter. The chickenwing gives Kazarian the title back at 12:34.

Rating: B-. This is what you want to go with in an opener as they were flying around the ring until one of them got caught. Thankfully Kazarian didn’t waste too long working on the knee before Bailey got up for his flips and dives, meaning the frustration levels weren’t as high here. Kazarian winning is a surprise as Bailey has been on a roll lately, but it is certainly a twist at the end of a fast paced match.

Call Your Shot Gauntlet Match

There are 20 entrants, with two minute intervals in a battle royal format until the final two have a singles match, with the winner getting a shot at any title any time they choose. Chris Sabin is in at #1 (due to being the last person eliminated from a battle royal) and Rocky Romero (a surprise) is in at #2. They go technical to start with neither being able to get any kind of an advantage. An exchange of armdrags gives us a standoff as Madman Fulton is in at #3, giving Sabin and Romero a joint target.

The clock speeds WAY up and it’s Rohit Raju in at #4 to go after the non-monsters. The mini tag match breaks out until Tasha Steelz is in at #5 as a bit of a wild card. Steelz joins in with the villains to get rid of Romero and it’s Rachael Ellering in at #6 to go after Steelz in a hurry. A bunch of people get rid of Fulton and it’s Savannah Evans in at #7. Sabin and Raju pair off as Ellering goes after Evans and Steelz. Johnny Swinger is in at #8 as Ellering and Evans eliminate each other. That leaves Swinger to hit on Steelz, who takes him down and hammers away instead.

Melina is in at #9 (another surprise) so Swinger shows her the guns. It actually works for a change, as Swinger is ready for her drop down into the splits and sends her face first into the mat. The Demon (as in WCW’s KISS Demon) in is at #10 so Swinger gets a quick autograph, followed by a quick elimination. Brian Myers is in at #11 as these intervals are all over the place. Matt Cardona is in at #12 and goes right at Myers due to the laws of the wrestling world.

More brawling against the ropes ensues and it’s Laredo Kid in at #13. A handspring DDT hits Raju as Myers dumps Melina and Steelz to clear the ring a bit. The ring is filled up a bit more though as Sam Beale is in at #14 and goes after Cardona (on Myers’ orders of course). Rich Swann is in at #15 and strikes away at Myers and Beale. Myers gets in a shot of his own but Beale tosses him out to a pretty big reaction. Ace Austin is in at #16 and kicks the Demon in the face, setting up the elimination, because the Demon was still in the match for some reason.

Moose is in at #17 and powerbombs Beale out in a huge crash. Eddie Edwards is in at #18 and there goes Kid. Moose gets kicked outside without an elimination, where he pulls Eddie out, also without an elimination. Alisha Edwards is in at #19 and it’s a family kendo stick beatdown on Moose. W. Morrissey is in at #20 (meaning we had 18 entrants in less than 20 minutes), giving us Sabin, Raju, Cardona, Swann, Austin, Moose, Eddie Edwards, Alisha Edwards and Morrissey as the final grouping.

Morrissey tosses out Alisha and then kicks Eddie out, meaning it’s time for the alliance with Moose. Raju wants to join them but joins the Edwards on the floor instead. Sabin dumps Ace Austin so here is Madman Fulton to attack Sabin, allowing Moose and Morrissey to get rid of him too. We’re down to Moose, Morrissey, Cardona and Swann so everyone takes a corner. Morrissey goes to get rid of Swann but Moose dumps both of them, leaving us with Cardona vs. Moose in a regular singles match. Cardona swings away and hits the Future Endeavored, only to miss Radio Silence. Moose spears him down for the pin at 29:38.

Rating: C-. They were flying through this one and your mileage may vary on that part. The bigger issue here was how fast people were coming in, as there wasn’t time to do much in between. It does help that there were multiple possible winners and they didn’t waste time once it was down to one on one. This could have been shortened a good bit though and the longer time is what holds it back a lot.

From 2022.

Knockouts Title: Jordynne Grace vs. Masha Slamovich

Grace is defending. They start very fast with Grace hammering her down in the corner and out to the floor, setting up a running kick through the ropes. Slamovich gets in a kick to the head on the apron and a belly to back piledriver on said apron knocks Grace a bit loopy. Back in and we hit the reverse chinlock to stay on Grace’s neck but Grace fights out without much effort.

A spinebuster out of the corner plants Slamovich again and they chop it out. Stereo spinning backfists put both of them down and the fans seem to approve. Back up and a Michinoku Driver gives Grace two more but the Vader Bomb misses. Grace hits a Jackhammer for another two but Slamovich slips out of the MuscleBuster for a sleeper.

That’s shifted into a bulldog choke until Grave powers up and grabs the rope. Another driver drops Slamovich again and Grace slaps her in the face a few times. The Grace Driver gets two and Grace is stunned. She’s so stunned that Slamovich is able to hit an Air Raid Crash into the corner, setting up the Snow Plow for two more, as Grace gets a foot under the ropes. They go up top where Grace gets in a shot to the ribs, setting up something close to a super Grace Driver to retain at 15:57.

Rating: B. I’d call that quite the surprise, as Slamovich seemed primed to take the title here. Grave is a fine champion but it isn’t like she was on some legendary run. Unless this is setting up a rather eventual James vs. Grace showdown, I don’t know if I get this. They had a heck of a hoss fight, but this should have been Slamovich’s big moment instead of Grace retaining.

From 2023.

Moose vs. PCO vs. Steve Maclin vs. Rhino

Anything goes and they do the whole “they’ve been locked up for twenty four hours” deal. It’s a brawl before the bell and Moose beats people up with the briefcase. As the spear is loaded up, here is PCO to brawl with Moose instead. Moose backdrops PCO over the top and through a ladder but the other two get back in to keep up the brawling. Maclin Death Valley Drivers Moose into a trashcan in the corner and hits PCO in the back with a chair.

Back in and PCO chokeslams Maclin and hits a suicide dive on Rhino. A middle rope legdrop hits Maclin and the Deanimator makes it even worse. Moose is back in with some release Rock Bottoms to PCO, who keeps popping right back up. With that not working, Moose plants CO onto some cinder blocks covers with thumbtacks (because that’s a thing).

Rhino is back up and wants tables, which the fans seem to like. Naturally it’s a barbed wire table but Maclin posts Rhino to cut him off. Cue Bully Ray to shove Maclin off the top and through the barbed wire table for the huge crash. Back in and PCO DDTs Moose, who catches him on top with some chair shots. Rhino Gores the chair that Moose is holding but it’s enough to put Moose down so that the PCOsault can finish him off at 11:11.

Rating: B-. This was exactly as advertised and that is not a bad thing. Sometimes you need to just let some big people go out there and hit each other really hard which is what we got here. PCO winning is a bit of a surprise but it does make sense given how much this match would suit him. Fun stuff here and they did what they needed to.

Impact Wrestling World Title: Josh Alexander vs. Eddie Edwards

Alexander is defending and Edwards sends Honor No More to the back. Both of their families are at ringside to make it more personal. They fight over a lockup to start as commentary breaks down the difference in the color of their gear. Edwards hits a chop, which is enough to make Alexander double leg him down and hammer away. Alexander knocks him outside for a breather before they switch places.

A slingshot dive drops Alexander for a change but he’s right back up with the crossbody to the back to send them both outside again. Back in and Edwards snaps off an overhead belly to belly before sending him right back to the floor. One might think they are filling in time here. The floor mats are pulled back, which takes long enough for Alexander to fight back. A German suplex from the apron to the floor is blocked so Edwards hits a Diehard Driver on the exposed floor.

Back in and Alexander seems to be favoring his leg and the Backpack Stunner takes him down. The half crab goes on but Alexander makes the rope. Back up and Alexander starts rolling some German suplexes, even going through the ropes and hitting another on the apron. That’s still not enough to break it up and they go outside with two more German suplexes, setting up another one on the ramp.

They head back inside with Alexander hitting a powerbomb onto the knee for two, only to have Eddie come back with Deep Six for two of his own. The Boston Knee Party is blocked and Alexander goes old school with a Styles Clash. Alexander puts on an ankle lock, which is broken without much trouble.

Edwards enziguris him off the top but the referee gets bumped. Cue Kenny King for a low blow before he is taken out by security, allowing a second referee to come in. The Boston Knee Party gets two on Alexander and a tiger driver gets the same, leaving both of them down. Alexander’s nose is busted but he comes up slugging, only to get rolled up for two. Another Boston Knee Party is blocked and the C4 Spike retains the title at 28:04.

Rating: B. Definitely a good match but this never hit that next level as it was bouncing pretty hard off the ceiling above it. Edwards is a strong challenger to Alexander and just like in the previous match, it felt like he should have won here instead of coming up short. What’s the point of Honor No More if Edwards loses in the biggest match the team has had? Anyway, solid main event, but I’m not sure if it was worthy of the final spot on the biggest show of the year.

Overall Rating: B-. This was a good example of “what else where they supposed to do” and it went well enough. They gave us a few matches from the last few years and the once chosen made for a nice two hours. We can get back to the important stuff next week but for now, this was as good as they could have done given the circumstances.

Ring Of Honor
Date: October 3, 2024

We’re coming up on WrestleDream and that is going to include Mark Briscoe defending the Ring Of Honor World Title against Chris Jericho. That’s at least what is taking place in the championship picture around here, because the World Title situation is still nutty. Other than that, it’s hard to say hat we’ll be getting here so let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

We run down the card, including Mark Briscoe defending the World Title against Matt Taven in a match that was not advertised in any significant way.

Premiere Athletes/Mark Sterling vs. Dustin Rhodes/Von Erichs

Non-title Proving Ground match, meaning that if the Athletes and Sterling win or last the ten minute time limit, they get a future title shot. Daivari headlocks Marshall to start before a dropkick puts Daivari down. Sterling comes in to slam Ross and hands it off to Nese, who gets double dropkicked.

Back up and Nese hits his own dropkick to knock Ross into the corner so the villains can take over. Nese splashes Sterling by mistake though and an enziguri allows the tag to Rhodes to wreck the Athletes. The Canadian Destroyer sends Nese outside but Sterling breaks up the Cross Rhodes. Stereo Claws get rid of Nese and Daivari so Shattered Dreams and the Final Reckoning can finish Sterling at 6:18.

Rating: C-. Counting the match where he won the Six Man Titles, Rhodes has been involved in matches involving the Undisputed Era five times, the Dark Order four times and the Premiere Athletes two times (some of which have been combinations of multiple teams). Some of those matches have been either title matches or Proving Ground matches for the Tag Team and Six Man Tag Team Titles.

I have no idea whatsoever why there are four teams fighting over two sets of titles, with one person holding a piece of both championships. Now though we’ve reached the point where the goofy manager is getting beaten up too. The limited interest that came with Rhodes getting one final run as a champion is already worn thin as he’s out of viable challengers and is just repeating the same low level goofs he’s already beaten. Either fix this or get rid of the titles.

During WrestleDream’s Zero Hour, Atlantis Jr. will defend the TV Title against Brian Cage. To be fair, Cage has won two singles matches over no name opponents in about six weeks so that’s good enough for a title shot. Again: give me a reason to care about what happens on this show when it comes to title matches or get rid of the stupid thing. This is another title match thrown together with no rhyme or reason and it’s been that way for months now.

Nyla Rose vs. Katie Arquette

Arquette kicks her in the ribs off the handshake and is promptly knocked down. The Cannonball into the backsplash into the Beast Bomb finishes for Rose at 1:30.

The Minions are planning a celebration for Athena but Billie Starkz isn’t happy. Athena isn’t happy and tells Starkz to admit she has a problem. Starkz says Athena is the problem for leaving her with Abadon but Athena says get over it because this is her day. That’s enough for Starkz to storm off, with Abadon popping up behind Athena and reach out for her, but Athena doesn’t notice.

Anthony Henry/Beef vs. Anthony Cantena/Wes Barkley

Henry and Barkley start things off but Beef comes in to crush Barkley in the corner. A missed charge allows the tag of to Cantena, who gets dropkicked down by Beef. It’s back to Henry, who gets caught with a quick neckbreaker but is right back with a short powerbomb to Cantena. The tag brings Beef back in and everything breaks down, with Cantena and Barkley’s stereo sunset flips being broken up. Henry’s top rope double stomp finishes Barkley at 3:55.

Rating: C. Henry and Beef are a funny enough act as the team where only one member wants to be there, but it’s hard to imagine this goes anywhere. Unless JD Drake comes back and Henry has to pick his side, there isn’t much of a reason to believe it’s going anywhere. They kept this quick here, which is the right idea for a comedy act like this one.

Infantry vs. Outrunners

Bravo and Magnum start things off and get nowhere so it’s a double tag to Dean and Floyd. They run the ropes until Floyd gets in a hiptoss into an armbar. Magnum comes back in to chop on Bravo, who punches him in the face for a breather. Some loud chops and a suplex get two on Magnum and a jumping elbow connects for the same. Dean misses a charge into the corner though and it’s Floyd coming in to clean house. A boot to the head into a DDT drops Floyd but Magnum is back in with Total Recall for the pin at 7:12.

Rating: C. Give the Outrunners the Tag Team Titles. Why not? There’s no division to speak of, Dustin Rhodes has gotten his oh so special run as a double champion and can still have his meaningless Six Man Titles and the fans actually seem to like the Outrunners. Do something with them before the hype is over.

Post match the Infantry shake hands but leave in a huff.

Beef is fired up about his team with Anthony Henry, who says they are not a team. Henry is in a team with JD Drake, so Beef asks for Drake’s number. There’s a one in a million chance, which is good enough for Beef.

Since WrestleDream is a celebration of professional wrestling (….sure), here’s a classic ROH match from October 1, 2005 (and from a previous review).

Samoa Joe vs. Kenta Kobashi

Well it was going to be this or one of the Punk matches and this makes more sense. Joe gets a pop but Kobashi gets an ovation. They shake hands to start and it’s time for some high intensity circling. The feeling out process continues until Joe hits the first chop for a loud gasp from the crowd. Kobashi takes him into the corner and shows him a real chop before a shoulder sends Kobashi outside. Joe hits the big suicide elbow into the barricade for two back inside and we take a break.

Back with Joe taking him outside for the big running boot in the chair. It worked so well the first time that Joe tries it again, only to charge into a shot to the face. Joe gets planted on the floor and they head back inside for some more hard Kobashi chops. We hit the front facelock for a bit until Joe suplexes his way to freedom. They strike it out hard with the sweat literally flying off of their chests.

Kobashi gets the better of things as we take another break and come back with Joe making the comeback and striking away even faster. Some Kawada kicks send Kobashi flying into the corner and it’s time for the facewashes. The MuscleBuster connects for two and Joe is stunned by the kickout. Another kick to the head sets up Joe’s STF, which is switched into a crossface and then something like an octopus hold on the mat as Kobashi FINALLY gets a foot on the ropes for the break.

Kobashi manages a half and half suplex and they’re both down again. Back up and Kobashi goes nuts with the rapid fire chops in the corner, leaving Joe’s chest looking rather disturbed. Another half and half suplex gets two and a sleeper suplex gives Kobashi the same. Joe tries to chop away but some spinning backfists set up a huge lariat to put him away at 24:21.

Rating: A. This is a great example of a match which was made better by the crowd’s reaction. The match felt like an event, as Kobashi is a living legend and having Joe face him in such a high profile match is the kind of thing you do not get to see very often. Joe is the biggest name in Ring of Honor history and Kobashi is far above him, but Joe hung in there and had him in real trouble in a classic. Great match, as you may have heard before.

Ring Of Honor World Title: Matt Taven vs. Mark Briscoe

Taven, with Mike Bennett, is challenging. A rollup gives Taven an early two but Briscoe is back up with a headlock. Briscoe chops him down and they slap hands, with Taven knocking him into the corner. Bennett’s distraction doesn’t work though and Briscoe is back with a Blockbuster off the apron. Back in and Briscoe misses the Froggy Bow, allowing Taven to hammer away and take over.

A neckbreaker sets up the chinlock but Taven’s Lionsault hits raised knees (which oddly gets commentary to stop talking about Chris Jericho rather than the other way around). Briscoe gets two off a high collar suplex but Taven hits Just The Tip for the same. Aurora Borealis hits Briscoe for two but a second attempt hits raised knees (again). The Froggy Boy also hits raised knees (we get the concept) so Briscoe hits a fisherman’s buster. The Jay Driller retains the title at 9:32.

Rating: B-. So to recap: Matt Taven has had one singles match since ROH relaunched under Tony Khan (defeating Darius Martin in February 2022) and has lost to Briscoe’s teams in some recent AEW tag matches. This is on the same she where there Premiere Athletes get a Proving Ground match rather than an actual title match despite losing to Dustin in multiple matches in recent weeks. At the same time, Brian Cage is getting a TV Title shot based on winning a few squash matches and possibly due to being on the winning team in a six man tag almost two months ago. Eh just give Dustin Rhodes all the titles. Should be fine.

Overall Rating: B-. I can only get so annoyed when about a third of this show was Joe vs. Kobashi (I’m assuming that was put in because two matches taped for the show ended in injuries) but geez the lack of continuity and coherence around here is astounding. I have no idea how one goes about getting a title shot around here, but I also know that none of it matters as the important stuff takes place on AEW shows anyway, making this show all the more pointless. Just make it Dark again already and drop the whole ROH thing, which sounds nice but after a year and a half, it’s not exactly seeming likely.

NXT LVL Up

NXT has officially moved over to the CW and, well, things didn’t really change that much. I’m not sure what it is going to mean around here, but last week’s show was pretty fun so it would be nice to replicate that this week. Then again you never know what you’re getting around here so let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

Opening sequence.

Adrianna Rizzo vs. Lainey Reid

The rest of the D’Angelo Family (minus Tony) is on commentary as Riz hits a Thesz press and hammers away. Some left hands in the corner don’t do much to Reid though, as she slips away and pulls Riz onto the turnbuckle. A hammerlock slam works on Riz’s arm but she sends Reid into the corner for two. Riz fights out of the armbar and snaps off a northern lights suplex to start the comeback. A springboard elbow sends Reid out to the apron but she’s back with a springboard kick to the face. Reid’s twisting suplex gets two but Riz is back with A Taste Of Risotto for the pin at 5:41.

Rating: C. Riz continues to look better and better each week and is becoming something other than the woman of the Family. If she can keep growing at this rate, she could be something in the title picture one day. On the other side you have Reid, who WWE certainly sees something in given how often she’s out there these days.

Harlem Lewis is a former college football player and is ready for Dante Chen. Well so much for his career.

Lainey Reid is upset at another loss but Riz says she’ll get her next time. This doesn’t seem to go well.

Harlem Lewis vs. Dante Chen

Chen works on the arm to start as the fans are already in his corner. Back up and Lewis runs him over and mocks the fans for their fandom. A running neck snap across the middle rope has Chen down again and Lewis hits some shoulders in the corner for two. Lewis’ big boot gets two more and we hit the neck crank. Chen fights up but gets suplexed back down for two more. They fight over a suplex until Chen gets the better of things and the comeback is on. A superkick sends Lewis outside for a bit, only for Chen to run him over back inside. The Gentle Touch finishes for Chen at 6:56.

Rating: C. It was a Dante Chen math, meaning it was all about giving Lewis his first chance. I’m not sure what they have with Lewis here, but at least he got the chance to get out there. He was antagonizing the crowd a bit and could easily be seen as unlikable, so maybe there is something there, though you can only get so much out of that with such a short match. In other words, what else are you supposed to get out of about seven minutes?

Overall Rating: C. Not much to see here with the shorter version of the show. Riz continues to look like she could be something in the future but there wasn’t much else of note this week. As usual, it’s such a guessing game of what you’re going to see around here and that was on full display here.
