Sasha Banks And Naomi Walk Out On Monday Night Raw

There’s your big twist for the week. Apparently Naomi and Sasha Banks walked out on this week’s Monday Night Raw, when they were supposed to take part in the show’s Six Pack Challenge main event, also featuring Doudrop, Nikki Ash, Becky Lynch and Asuka. Apparently Banks didn’t like the creative, which would have seen Naomi winning, so Naomi went with them. WWE referenced it on Raw and issued a statement, which you can see below:

https://twitter.com/SeanRossSapp/status/1526389791784321028/photo/1

I believe the term here is egads and I’m not sure where to start. First of all, I know it might not have been the best creative or whatever the situation was, but walking out isn’t a good idea. It’s unprofessional and makes you look like you’re throwing your toys out of the crib. To make it worse, this is hardly the first time that Banks has walked out on the company. At this point, I’m almost so sick of hearing about her leaving that I wouldn’t mind if she didn’t return. She’s very talented, but either do your job or stay out.

As for Naomi, I hope she comes to her senses, because she might be talented but she isn’t a big enough star to walk out on her own. Maybe she thinks being part of the extended Anoa’i family gets her out of trouble, but it might not be quite enough. On top of that, you have the Women’s Tag Team Titles and….well maybe this is the way to get rid of those stupid things once and for all.

Overall, I’m not happy that this happened, but Banks has long run out of good graces to make up for something like this. How many times has she walked out now? I’m sure a lot of wrestlers are unhappy with how they are being presented, but stick around until your contract is up or something other than just walking out. Maybe this is fixed soon, but my goodness it’s not looking great for either of them.

ECW On Sci Fi – November 13, 2007: Help From The New Recruits

ECW On Sci Fi
Date: November 13, 2007
Location: Kansas Coliseum, Wichita, Kansas
Commentators: Joey Styles, Tazz

It’s the last show before Survivor Series and that means it is time to hammer home the build towards CM Punk defending the ECW World Title against the Miz and John Morrison in a triple threat match. Miz has come a long way in recent weeks and Morrison is the top heel around here (or close to it) so that is as logical of a title match as they have right now. Let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

Opening sequence.

MVP/Mr. Kennedy vs. Hardys

Yay for guest stars and the theoretical Brand Split. Matt and Kennedy start things off with the fans being WAY behind Hardy (no word on if they mean Matt or Jeff). Kennedy gets taken into the corner so Jeff can slingshot in with a dropkick for an early two. It’s off to MVP to take over on Jeff but the villains are sent to the floor so Jeff can take both of them down with a dive.

Back in and a double elbow drops Kennedy for two but he is fine enough to knock Jeff down. MVP kicks Jeff out to the floor but Matt cuts MVP (his partner) off from getting to Jeff (his partner) as we take a break. We come back with MVP pulling on both arms before Kennedy grabs a seated abdominal stretch.

Jeff fights up and gets over to Matt, allowing some of the house to be cleaned, including the Side Effect for two on Kennedy. It’s right back to Jeff to miss the Swanton though and MVP drops an elbow for two. The seated abdominal stretch goes on for a bit before Kennedy adds a legdrop for two. Jeff fights up and hits the sitout gordbuster on MVP but gets sent to the apron. Kennedy pulls Jeff down by the hair, with Jeff landing HARD on the floor. MVP throws Jeff back in for the really quick pin.

Rating: C+. The ending was rather scary but maybe MVP throwing him back inside for the easy pin was a good sign as I would hope he wouldn’t do that if Jeff was really hurt. There was an interesting dynamic here focused on Matt, as he was in the middle of two different partners. MVP/Matt has gone on for a long time now and I’m wondering how long they can keep it as good as they have so far.

Post match MVP and Matt argue but MVP cuts off Kennedy’s running chair shot. MVP and Kennedy leave, allowing Matt to help Jeff (thankfully awake) walk to the back.

We look back at CM Punk vs. Jamie Noble on Smackdown, which saw some interference that left Punk laying.

Survivor Series Classic: the first one in 1987. Classic seems to fit for that one.

Here is Matt Striker in the ring for a chat. He has some good news for us: Big Daddy V isn’t here tonight because he has a bad cold. That is a good reminder to get your flu shot because it can help everything. V will be at Survivor Series though and he will dominate everyone. Cue Kane so Striker starts backing off in a hurry. Kane doesn’t mind and beats Striker down without much effort.

Melina/Layla vs. Kelly Kelly/Michelle McCool

Melina works on Michelle’s arm to start but Kelly comes in for a pretty bad looking double suplex. Kelly pulls Melina out of the corner for the sole purpose of flipping over into a rollup for two. That isn’t working for Melina, who takes her into the corner and then pull her back out. Kelly breaks that up in a hurry and hands it off to Michelle to clean house. A big boot finishes Melina.

Rating: D+. This would be one of those “well what were you expecting” matches. Kelly and Layla ware there as eye candy, Michelle is getting better but is still a work in progress and Melina is the one slightly polished worker in the match. This was designed to have women on camera and that’s all it was going to be.

Survivor Series rundown.

SAVE US.

CM Punk vs. Jamie Noble

Non-title, Miz is on commentary and John Morrison comes out to join him before the bell. We take a break and come back joined in progress with a battle over arm control. Punk takes over with a front facelock as commentary talks about Miz’s hat. A backbreaker gives Punk two but Noble is back with a jumping knee to the arm.

The arm gets snapped back a few times and Noble cranks on it a bit to keep things on the mat. A comeback is cut off and Noble goes with something close to a keylock. That’s broken up with a Samoan drop into some Kawada kicks to give Punk a breather. Punk hits a powerslam but the springboard clothesline is pulled into a Fujiwara armbar. With that broken up, Noble tries the tiger driver but gets reversed into the GS for the pin.

Rating: C+. The focus on the commentary hurt this one a bit but other than that, they had a well put together match with a simple story of Noble going after the arm and Punk fighting through to catch him in the end. That’s an acceptable way to go with a TV main event, especially when the focal point was the people talking. Noble continues to be a valuable piece of any roster, as he is having one good performance after another.

Post match Miz and Morrison come in and beat Punk down to end the show.

Overall Rating: C. The important thing here is that this show felt energized. There was good enough action throughout and while that might be due to the guest stars, I wasn’t bored throughout the show. ECW’s biggest problem for a long time has been their lack of star power and that is starting to be solved, at least a bit, by having these Smackdown names come in. Keep that up and they might be on to something around here.

ECW On Sci Fi – November 6, 2007: Maybe They Figured It Out

ECW On Sci Fi
Date: November 6, 2007
Location: Rabobank Arena, Bakersfield, California
Commentators: Joey Styles, Taz

It’s time for another title match as CM Punk defends against John Morrison (again). Mark Henry seems to be primed to become the next major force around here but you never can tell just how well that is going to go. Other than that, we don’t exactly have much going on around here and that continues to be a problem. Let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

In Memory of The Fabulous Moolah.

We open with a video on CM Punk vs. John Morrison, so at least they’re getting to the point tonight.

Opening sequence.

Mark Henry vs. Kane

Henry pounds away at the back to start and crushes Kane with a powerslam for two. Kane gets driven back first into the corner but comes out slugging. That’s cut off but Kane fights out of a bearhug attempt. The top rope clothesline connects but Henry knees him in the ribs to break up the chokeslam. Henry has had enough of this and grabs a chair, which is enough for the DQ.

Rating: C. They kept this one short and that is a good idea, as you can only get so far with these two doing their big man match. Henry continues to look like a monster and could become a monster of the next few months either around here or on Smackdown. It isn’t anything we haven’t see before, but at least they are trying something with him.

Post match Henry wrecks Kane, including the World’s Strongest Slam onto the chair.

Wrestlemania tickets are on sale. I’m still surprised that it took so long to get it to Florida.

Nunzio vs. Jamie Noble

They go with the grappling to start until Noble elbows him in the back of the head and takes him into the corner. A backbreaker gives Noble a pair of near falls and there’s a kick to the head to make it worse. The chinlock goes on for a bit, with Nunzio fighting up and hitting a quick Sicilian Slice. Noble has had it though and it’s a Rock Bottom backbreaker into a fireman’s carry gutbuster to finish Nunzio.

Rating: C+. This might not have the biggest connection to ECW but it is nice to see some fresh blood around here. Noble is the kind of person you can put in any spot and he’ll be fine through talent alone, so throwing him out there with one of the better ECW Originals is not a bad idea.

Video on John Morrison.

SAVE US, now saying “can you break the code” and “the answer is code”.

Kelly Kelly vs. Layla

Miz (without Brooke, who was released a few days ago) is on commentary. Layla kicks her down to start and we’re already to the mounted right hands. A slam finishes Kelly in less than a minute. Yeah a slam.

Post match Balls Mahoney runs in to check on Kelly but Miz would rather walk off than fight.

Video on CM Punk vs. John Morrison, including their history.

We get a clip from Rey Mysterio’s ECW debut to promote his new DVD.

Elijah Burke vs. Shannon Moore

Moore sends him into the corner to start and drops Burke for an early two. That’s too far for Burke, who punches him into the ropes for the running crotch attack. The Outer Limits elbow (good name) sets up the Elijah Express for the fast pin.

Fabulous Moolah tribute video.

Miz wishes John Morrison luck against CM Punk tonight, but Morrison doesn’t need it. All Miz can do is manage a bunch of girls and he can’t even do that well. Miz tells Morrison that his luck is running out soon.

We look at D-Generation X beating Randy Orton and Umaga last night on Raw.

Post Raw main event, William Regal makes a rule for Orton vs. Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series: if Shawn uses the superkick, he is disqualified and can never challenge Orton for the title again. In exchange, if Orton tries to get disqualified, Shawn is champion.

Survivor Series rundown.

ECW Title: CM Punk vs. John Morrison

Punk is defending and gets shouldered down early on. Back up and Punk starts with the kicks but Morrison blocks a middle rope sunset flip. The springboard kick to the face gives Morrison two and we’re already in a crossarm choke. Punk fights out of that as well and the springboard clothesline connects for two. A leg lariat sets up a powerslam and some Kawada kicks to keep Morrison in trouble. Cue Miz for a distraction though to break up the GTS though and Morrison grabs a rollup for two. With Punk down, Miz throws in his hat to distract Morrison, allowing Punk to grab the retaining rollup.

Rating: C+. I like the idea of bringing Miz up to the next level, as he has done well with what he has been given so far but still needs that extra boost to get him to the main event scene. If nothing else, putting him in there with Morrison in a bigger feud could be a good way to go as they have shown some nice chemistry when they are together.

Overall Rating: C+. The best thing here is they seemed to start to have an idea of how to use the Smackdown guys. I would rather have the lower level Smackdown stars filling out this show than the ECW Originals, most of whom had nothing going on and looked like losers most of the time. This show felt like it was getting closer to some stability and a more established norm and that has been needed for a long time around here.

WWE Releases 10 More From NXT

Spring cleaning seems to be upon up.

https://wrestlingrumors.net/tommyhall/breaking-wwe-releases-nine-company/

Dakota Kai

Harland

Malcolm Bivens

Persia Pirotta

Blair Baldwin (referee)

Sanjana George

Draco Anthony

Mila Milani

Raelyn Divine

Dexter Lumis

There isn’t a major name on here but Lumis, Pirotta, Harland and Kai are certainly surprises (Bivens apparently wasn’t going to re-sign so they let him go).  The interesting one to me is Kai, who was literally a champion earlier THIS MONTH and now she’s gone.  I’m not sure how many of these people are going to get signed elsewhere (Bivens would be a steal for any promotion that wants him) but you’ll likely see some of them somewhere.  What worries me is how many more might be let go.  It’s never good to see this kind of thing and odds are WWE isn’t done yet.

ECW On Sci Fi – October 30, 2007: They Did The Mash

ECW On Sci Fi
Date: October 30, 2007
Location: Nassau Coliseum, New York City, New York
Attendance: 12,300
Commentators: Joey Styles, Tazz

It’s the Halloween special and this time around that means we have the Monster Mash four man battle royal between Kane, Great Khali, Mark Henry and Big Daddy V. They are leaning heavily into the freak show idea here and that is not a bad idea. I could go for seeing what else they have going on here now that Cyber Sunday is gone so let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

We open with a Halloween themed intro, set to something that is in no way similar to a certain Halloween novelty song about a holiday themed dance.

Opening sequence.

Elijah Burke vs. Jimmy Wang Yang

Before the match, Burke mocks Yang for being a working class guy. Yang slugs away to start but gets sent to the apron and then out to the floor (where there is some spooky smoke for some atmosphere). Burke starts in on the arm and grabs an armbar back inside, setting up a shoulder breaker. Another armbar doesn’t work that well but Burke is kicked out of the air. That’s about it for Yang’s offense though as he is sent into the corner for the Elijah Express and the pin.

Rating: C-. Little more than a squash for Burke here, which is a good idea as he hasn’t had much going on lately. Sometimes you need to just keep him warm and that’s all they were going for here. At least Yang is some fresh blood around here, even if he isn’t likely to go that far.

Video on Kane.

Raw Rebound.

Nunzio is a vampire and scares a bunch of kids but has them come with him. They go trick or treating to Balls Mahoney (in a cage, not in a costume), CM Punk (behind a KEEP OUT door, again not in a costume), and finally the Boogeyman, who scares Nunzio off and gives the kids worms.

Nunzio vs. Tommy Dreamer

Extreme Rules and it’s Dracula vs. Paul Heyman. Dreamer knocks him down to start and sends Nunzio flying off the apron. A pie to the face rocks Nunzio again as commentary isn’t sure what to make of this. Back in and a really big cell phone to the head sets up an apple bowl to the face, followed by the DDT for the pin. Commentary still can’t figure out who Dreamer is supposed to be.

Rating: C. The important thing here is they didn’t waste a lot of time on a joke that was only so funny in the first place. Commentary not being able to say Heyman was kind of amusing and it isn’t like beating Nunzio is going to matter that much. I chuckled a few times here and wasn’t annoyed so call that a win.

Video on Great Khali.

We look back at the Divas Halloween costume battle royal from Raw, with Kelly Kelly winning.

Miz vs. John Morrison

The winner gets an ECW Title shot. Feeling out process to start with Miz slapping him in the face, sending Morrison into a charge. Said charge is cut off by a drop toehold as Miz seems to be getting smarter by the week. Miz blocks a neck snap across the top and kicks Morrison hard into the barricade. Back in and the springboard kick to the face misses for Morrison, allowing Miz to hit the running corner clothesline for two. The Reality Check misses as well though and Morrison is right back with the corkscrew neckbreaker for the fast pin and the title shot.

Rating: C+. Yeah it’s Morrison getting the title shot again, which isn’t exactly a thrilling concept. Morrison has been the main challenger for the title more than once and it would have been nice to see something changed up. That being said, it isn’t like there is anyone else to go after Punk at the moment so this is kind of the only thing they can do at the moment.

Video on Mark Henry.

Video on Big Daddy V.

CM Punk vs. James Curtis

Non-title and John Morrison is on commentary. Curtis drives him into the corner for some shoulders to the ribs as Morrison isn’t all that impressed by Punk. After fighting out of the corner, Punk kicks away, setting up the bulldog and the springboard clothesline. The GTS finishes in a hurry.

Post match Morrison jumps Punk to leave him laying. The title match is next week as ECW continues its search for some new title contenders.

Monster Mash Battle Royal

Mark Henry, Kane, Great Khali, Big Daddy V

Everyone goes after Kane to start but he ducks underneath them until Henry and V collide for a double knockdown. Khali kicks Kane down and is the only one standing for a bit. Back up and Henry just lifts Khali off the mat (geez) before V seems to drop Kane on what was supposed to be the swinging Boss Man Slam. V splashes Henry into Khali in the corner but misses a charge at Kane and gets eliminated. Henry and Kane clothesline Khali out and we’re down to two. Kane can’t dump Henry but he can kick him in the face and go up top. The top rope clothesline is pulled out of the air though and Henry throws him out for the win.

Rating: C. Sometimes you need a fun main event and that’s all they went for here. Henry being pushed as the next monster should work out as he could be an interesting challenger to Punk if that is where they want to go. What we got here was a fun change of pace, but it does kind of feel like a match that they put on because they didn’t have anything else worthy of a main event.

Overall Rating: C. They kind of punted this week, with the Punk vs. Morrison match being the only thing they set up for the future. That’s not a bad idea here though as it was around a holiday and they were coming off of a pay per view, so have a little fun instead of going through with what would have been another lackluster show. ECW still needs to get some better talent in place, but they also need some better stories because this is only so interesting of a show week to week.

ECW On Sci Fi – October 23, 2007: Monsters A Go-Go

ECW On Sci Fi
Date: October 23, 2007
Location: Sprint Center, Kansas City, Missouri
Commentators: Joey Styles, Tazz

We’re on the way to Cyber Sunday and ECW actually has something on the card. The fans get to pick CM Punk’s challenger for the ECW World Title, but there is more going on this week. We also have some more issues between Miz and Balls Mahoney, as they are kind of fighting over Kelly Kelly. Let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

Opening sequence.

Here is the Miz with Extreme Expose to get things going. Miz recaps the idea of the fans voting for CM Punk’s challenger on Sunday and goes over his fellow options. Big Daddy V is a monster but John Morrison is a fruitcake. That leaves you with the man that the Mizfits will vote for in droves, but for now he needs to deal with Kelly Kelly.

Last week, she went on a date with Balls Mahoney, which Miz told her not to do. Since Miz owns her contract, she could be gone from ECW and her career would be over. The thing is though he is a nice guy so he is going to make her life miserable week after week. Cue John Morrison to interrupt and ask where the tool’s hat is this week. Neither of them want Big Daddy V in the title match but Miz needs to face reality: no one is going to vote for him.

As for now though, Morrison would like to know why Kelly Kelly associates with a loser like Miz. Why not elevate yourself to someone who has beaten CM Punk? He knows Kelly wants to spend the night in the Palace of Wisdom, which is enough to earn Morrison a slap to the face. Cue Balls Mahoney, who gets taken down by Miz and Morrison. Miz turns his back on Morrison though and gets knocked outside. Cue CM Punk to knock Morrison to the floor for a bonus.

Post break, Miz yells at Morrison but Armando Estrada comes in to make the two of them vs. Mahoney/Punk in tonight’s main event.

Kane vs. Big Daddy V

Matt Striker is here with V. Kane wastes no time in striking away but V runs him over with a clothesline. The slam sets up some shouting before Kane gets pounded in the corner. A sidewalk slam plants Kane and V sends him outside to keep up the beating. There’s a whip into the steps and we take a break. Back with V mounting Kane on the mat because this is WWE’s best idea for a monster like him. Kane fights out of a chinlock and strikes away, setting up the running corner clothesline. There’s the top rope clothesline but Mark Henry of all people comes in to go after Kane for the DQ.

Rating: D. What else were you expecting from these two having a match that involved V mounting Kane? There is only so much that Kane can do when he is the more mobile of the two and that was on display here. I could see a rather messy four way coming from this, which would certainly be a spectacle. Not good, but a spectacle.

Post match here is Great Khali as this feels like fan fiction. V and Khali fight off (oh dear), leaving Kane to kick Henry to the floor.

Smackdown Rebound.

CM Punk and Balls Mahoney are ready for their tag match later tonight. Punk asks how Mahoney’s date with Kelly Kelly went and gets a big grin. Punk: “Balls, that is disturbing.” Mahoney: “Yeah, that’s what she said too.” I don’t think Punk knows how to handle that one.

Next week: Kane vs. Great Khali vs. Big Daddy V vs. Mark Henry in a Monster Mash Battle Royal. There’s your spectacle.

Elijah Burke vs. Nunzio

Fallout from Burke walking out on Nunzio during a tag match last week. Burke starts fast by sending Nunzio into the post and pounding away at his chest. A running crotch attack to the back of Nunzio’s neck gets two but Nunzio fights out of a chinlock. That doesn’t last long as Burke knocks him back down and grabs the chinlock sequel. Nunzio fights up again and hits the Sicilian Slice for two, only to get caught in an STO. The Elijah Express finishes for Burke.

Rating: C-. This was just a squash for Burke, who continues to be something of a player around here. I would assume he probably gets some house show title shots so keeping him strong here makes sense. Nunzio is good for a match like this as you need someone to beat on and the fans still respond to him well enough.

Great Khali rants about something.

Big Daddy V is ready for a Monster Mash Battle Royal.

CM Punk/Balls Mahoney vs. Miz/John Morrison

Punk and Miz get things going with Punk grabbing an early headlock. The middle rope spinning crossbody gives Punk two and it’s off to Mahoney to start working on the arm. Punk is already back in for an armbar but Miz throws Mahoney down to take over. Morrison comes in and gets taken down by the hair to put him in some quick trouble. A shot to the face drops Morrison again but Mahoney misses the top rope legdrop.

Miz’s legsweep gets two as commentary talks about Mahoney and Kelly Kelly’s date. Morrison can’t get very far with a chinlock so he kicks Mahoney in the face for two instead. A Miz chinlock works a bit better but Mahoney fights out of it as well and brings in Punk to clean house. Everything breaks down and Miz clotheslines Morrison by mistake. Mahoney cuts Miz off and the GTS finishes Morrison.

Rating: C. Even with the lower level Mahoney in there, I don’t think there was ever any real drama. Maybe Miz or Morrison could grab a fluke rollup to pin Punk and build themselves up for Sunday, but that was about the only option. ECW is basically telling you to vote for Miz here, as Morrison just got pinned (again) and Big Daddy V is busy with the other monsters. It’s Miz’s vote to win and that isn’t a bad idea.

Overall Rating: C-. Much like Raw this week, there is only so much that can be done when you don’t have a concrete match to build towards. Punk is trying to find a challenger but the candidates all have their own deals going on. The battle royal sounds like a fun match that I won’t ever need to see again but for a big Halloween style deal, it should be a nice way to go. Having a clear cut program would be nicer though and we can get to that starting next week.

Main Event – April 7, 2022: By The Textbook

Main Event
Date: April 7, 2022
Location: American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas
Commentators: Kevin Patrick, Byron Saxton

It’s the final show of Wrestlemania weekend and since I was in the house, I might as well take a quick look. Main Event has never meant much of anything but it can do a decent job of warming the crowd up. Granted I don’t know how much the post Wrestlemania crowd needs firing up but it’s kind of a tradition. Let’s get to it.

Note that I was in the arena for this show, sitting in the upper deck and looking down at the edge of the stage, with the ring to my left and the Titantron to my right.

We open with a long recap of Wrestlemania.

Opening sequence.

Apollo Crews vs. Craig Leslie

Of note: Crews, who has Commander Azeez with him, has a line in his theme song talking about how he did all this on his own and had no one in his corner. Crews starts fast with a clothesline and we’re already off to the neck crank. The slingshot hilo gets two and we’re already off to the chinlock. Back up and a dropkick lets Crews pose, setting up another chinlock. Leslie fights up and hits a right hand, setting up a monkey flip for two. Crews has had it and hits a Samoan drop for the pin at 3:49.

Rating: C-. Pretty much just a squash here and that is fine enough. They didn’t waste time and had Crews run over the local jobber without much trouble. Granted it means absolutely nothing because it is the opening match on Main Event, but Crews getting to showcase his power and athleticism is a good thing.

Post match Azeez beats up Leslie.

From Raw.

Here is Cody Rhodes, rising through the stage again and walking down a short ramp, to get things going. Cody takes his time getting to the ring and the fans seem happy to see him, though it doesn’t come across as well as it did in the arena. Cody: “So….what do you guys want to talk about?” Forty seven days ago, he became a free agent and has kept silent since then. Rhodes made the decision to return to WWE and it was never a hard choice. It’s a great story of the returning star and he is glad to be back.

He is an avid reader and he stumbled upon this quote: “Sometimes a man finds his destiny upon the path to avoid it.” Rhodes puts up a photo of his dad holding the WWWF Title in Madison Square Garden from September 26, 1977. That is the same title that Hulk Hogan (boo), Undertaker (yay), Shawn Michaels (yay) and HHH (also yay) among others have held over the years. Rhodes talks about how this photo was on the mantle in his parents’ bedroom until his father’s last day.

One day when he was a kid, he asked his dad about being a champion like Hulk Hogan. His dad got serious and explained the championship advantage, meaning that since he won by countout, he didn’t take the belt (yes belt) home with him. That made eight year old Cody decide he was going to win the title for his father.

That hasn’t happened yet and that Dream died right in front of him. Now though, he wants to claim his dream again and his intentions are clear. Rhodes is going to do it for his friends, his fans, and for the American Dream. Cue Seth Rollins to interrupt and they shake hands, with Rollins being very happy and mouthing what commentary says is “welcome home”.

This was a big moment for Cody, but the important point here is that it made sense. Cody didn’t go onto any weird tangent and got his point across (with some impressive sounding words). I can go with the idea, though a Rollins rematch might be on tap first. Good stuff here, and the fans were into Cody. I’m not sure if that lasts beyond Wrestlemania weekend, but it’s a good start.

From Raw.

Here is Edge for a big chat. Edge says he is an honest man. He knew he would beat AJ Styles but he didn’t know Damian Priest would come out to help him. Edge knew that these people would be sheep just like he said they would. Fans: “WE ARE SHEEP!” Edge: “Very telling idiots.” The fans need to rise for the man who respects Edge’s message and the punishment for the guilty: Damian Priest.

After a handshake, Edge asks what got through to Priest over the last few weeks. The fans say they don’t care, but Priest says that doesn’t bother him anymore. Priest says he spent a long time trying to please everyone else, but that made it so easy to pledge his loyalty to Edge. They came to their new reality at the same time, which leads Edge to AJ Styles. He wanted the pitbull AJ Styles and that’s what he got. The thing with pitbulls is that they pick fight over flight, but AJ needs to think of his family.

Cue Styles for the brawl, including taking out Priest and sending Edge into the post. Styles grabs some chairs but Priest gets up, allowing Edge to take Styles down. The Conchairto is loaded up but referees and agents make the save. I can go with the feud continuing, especially if Priest and Edge bring in some friends to uneven the odds even further.

From Raw.

Dominik Mysterio vs. Miz

Rey Mysterio is here with Dominik, who gets hit with the Skull Crushing Finale for the pin at 26 seconds. Ok then.

Post match here is Veer Mahaan to lay out the Mysterios, including a cross between the Gargano Escape and a camel clutch to Dominik as Rey crawled over to try and save him.

We look at the Steve Austin/Vince McMahon/Austin Theory/Pat McAfee deal from Wrestlemania.

T-Bar vs. Shelton Benjamin

Cedric Alexander is here with Shelton. They fight over a lockup to start with T-Bar powering him into the corner. Benjamin’s headlock doesn’t work very well but a jumping elbow to the face certainly does. T-Bar gets knocked to the floor where Shelton jumps him off a Cedric distraction. Back in and a top rope clothesline gives Shelton two but T-Bar kicks him to the floor.

We take a break and come back with T-Bar holding a chinlock and elbowing Benjamin in the face. T-bar stomps in the corner and we’re right back to the chinlock. Benjamin fights up again and we get a double knockdown. A backdrop has T-Bar in trouble and a suplex is countered into a neckbreaker. T-bar grabs a Death Valley Driver but Benjamin is back with a knee. Paydirt gives Benjamin the pin at 10:39.

Rating: C+. That’s on the Main Event sliding scale of course and that is a great thing to see. What matters most is they had some people out there who can wrestle a fun match and leave you wondering who was going to win. Even if it is just a little drama, I’ll take it over another squash where you’re just waiting on the inevitable.

From Raw.

Here is MVP for a chat. MVP praises Bobby Lashley for beating Omos on his own and brings out Lashley for his celebration. Lashley brags about beating the biggest and strongest opponent he has ever faced. He knew he had to wait for Omos to make a mistake and that is exactly what happened. Cue Omos to shout that he wants a rematch….and MVP turns on Lashley to help Omos beat him down. There’s a twist and it makes sense, as Lashley is a face anyway and doesn’t need someone to talk for him.

From Raw to wrap it up.

Here is the Bloodline for the big show closing as they take their time getting to the ring. Roman Reigns says he knows why the people are here but wants Paul Heyman to explain the Bloodline’s success. Heyman lists off the team’s accomplishments, with a focus on Reigns’ box office successes of course. Reigns calls himself the last needle mover because he is always operating at the highest level. He isn’t hanging his hat on this weekend because he is constantly moving forward. This Friday on Smackdown, you’ll find out the next step. Until then, acknowledge him. End of show.

That’s an interesting way to go, as they didn’t really say anything. Maybe they have something planned for Smackdown, but this was ten minutes to say “Reigns won, he’s great, see you Friday.” I’m not sure if that means anything, but it’s quite the wait for nothing substantial.

Overall Rating: C. Yep it’s still Main Event and there isn’t much of a reason to stick around with it. This was just a one off show and there is nothing wrong with that. There is nothing wrong with taping the preshow matches and it worked out well enough, but it’s the definition of completely skippable.

Undertaker Axxess Panel

I took in the Undertaker Axxess panel after Raw. It was the final event of Wrestlemania weekend and something that WWE hasn’t tried before. While I bought the ticket thinking it was one of the Axxess meet and greets, it wound up being a chance to sit in a room and listen to Undertaker answer fan questions. When I say answering, I mean going into a variety of stories, which is one of my favorite things in all of wrestling. This was much more a fan event for me so I didn’t take notes, but rather just sat back and listened. I won’t bother trying to remember every question and answer, but here are some highlights (not in order).

• The event began at 11:30 with Byron Saxton introducing Undertaker, who was straight up Mark Calaway this time.

• His Mount Rushmore of wrestling is Steve Austin, Andre the Giant, Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels.

• His Mount Rushmore of his own Wrestlemania matches are Shawn/Shawn/HHH #2/HHH #3. Felt like a bit of a stock answer but you can imagine how many times he has been asked.

• When he changed into the biker, he always knew he would become the Deadman again because those are his roots.

• When asked about his favorite attire, Undertaker went into an explanation of his favorite titles, saying his first WWF Title was his most important. Then he wasn’t sure why a lot of the crowd was snickering or why Saxton couldn’t stop smiling.

• He was asked about how hard it was to keep kayfabe over the years and said it was his own choice. It made the character feel that much more special, plus got him out of a lot of things he didn’t want to do, such as interviews and appearances.

• The closest anyone ever got to cracking him up was JBL. Undertaker has decided to get an RV and drive around the country (which he admitted was a boneheaded move) and it was a disaster, with his RV being such a lemon that he sued the company that sold it to him. One night, JBL got a mic and said they didn’t need to fight. Instead, Undertaker needed to get an RV and drive around the country. Undertaker said he had to bite a hole in his lip to keep from cracking up and then gave JBL quite the beating for getting him that close.

• He had a lot of praise for Yokozuna, going into a discussion of how great he was more than once. When Yokozuna worked a dark match shortly after debuting, Undertaker begged Vince to let him work with Yokozuna first. Vince said in due time, because he had someone else in mind. Then Giant Gonzalez came walking down the hall, which is what Vince meant. Undertaker said he partially left WCW to avoid working with Gonzalez (El Gigante there), plus they didn’t think he could draw anymore.

• Funny exchange (fan’s lines paraphrased):

Fan: “You’re best known for your Wrestlemania Streak, but some of the matches didn’t quite live up to expectations.”

Undertaker: “SECURITY!”

Fan: “Matches like the Brock Lesnar one and the Roman Reigns one could have gone better.”

Undertaker: “Do you not get that this is Put Taker Over Weekend???”

Of the two, he would rather do the Reigns match over, but he doesn’t remember anything about the Lesnar match due to the concussion.

• He is excited about the Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys’ future prospects.

• When asked how he would react to his children getting into the business, he said his nine year old daughter was the most likely candidate. If she wanted to get into the business, he would support her, just as he would no matter what she did. Undertaker: “As long as it doesn’t involve a pole right? Dang Michelle is going to kick my a** for that one.”

• He had never heard of the Undertaker wine until Steve Austin pulled it out on the Broken Skull Sessions and thought it was terrible.

• His favorite drink is Jack Daniels, because if it is good enough for Frank Sinatra, it is good enough for him.

• When asked if he could face Sting or the Fiend, he picked the Fiend, but says it would have been different if they meant in everyone’s prime. He was worried about doing the match with Sting because it might not have lived up to expectations.

• He was asked at least twice about the Never Say Never deal and said he was only trying to be cute at the end of his induction speech. After the speech, he and Vince were sitting in Vince’s office and reminiscing a bit.

Vince: “So what did you mean by that “never say never”?

Undertaker: “No. Stop it.”

• His heart and mind are still into get into the ring but his body can’t do it anymore.

• A fan asked about the rumor of him threatening Shawn Michaels during Wrestlemania XIV.

Undertaker: “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Fan explains the whole thing.

Undertaker: “Yeah I knew what you mean. I’m making fun of you. Without saying anything, things were going to happen that night one way or another.”

• When asked about how they filmed the inside the casket promo from Royal Rumble 1994, Undertaker said “none of your d*** business”, saying that he had to keep a few secrets because he is the old school guy.

• And finally, because it is one of those stories that has been rumored forever, he does indeed hate cucumbers. When he was about eight, he came inside and his mom was making a big vat of cucumbers in vinegar and he ate the whole thing. His stomach was so messed up that anything with any cucumbers in it has messed him up for the rest of his life. This has led to him yelling at more than one sushi chef for ignoring his NO CUCUMBERS orders. Also, Paul Hearer would put cucumbers into his drinks/food as a rib. Undertaker: “I love that man but he is the devil.”

All in all, I was hoping that this would be a lot longer, but I could listen to wrestlers tell stories all day. It was pricier than I would have gone ($150, which did include unlimited free admission to Axxess (normally $10 a session)) and I probably wouldn’t have bought it had I not thought it was the usual Axxess VIP deal, but it was certainly a unique experience, just to hear Undertaker talk about kayfabe and heels/babyfaces.

ECW On Sci Fi – October 16, 2007: A Good Day

ECW On Sci Fi
Date: October 16, 2007
Location: NEC, Birmingham, England
Attendance: 10,000
Commentators: Joey Styles, Tazz

We’re still in England and things are not going so well for ECW World Champion CM Punk. Last week saw the return of John Morrison, who beat up a banged up Punk in the main event. At the same time, Punk has to deal with Big Daddy V, who seems like he wants the title too. Or maybe to use Punk as a pizza topping. Let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

Commentary gives us a quick welcome and hypes up a handicap match main event between CM Punk/a mystery partner vs. Miz/John Morrison/Big Daddy V.

Opening sequence.

Before the handicap match, here is John Morrison to ask if we can hear the buzz. The fans make the matches for Cyber Sunday and the fans are going to want to pick him to face Punk at Cyber Sunday. His time has come so dream, love and scream Morrison. In case you need more proof, here is a clip of Morrison beating Punk last week. So go vote for him! Cue the Miz to interrupt, saying that Morrison is a former ECW Champion so people will vote for him…but the Shaman of Sexy?

Miz gets so many girls that he is bored with them. Women want him and men want to be him, so people are going to vote Miz. Morrison: “And I thought I was vain.” Morrison says he is bigger than everyone in ECW…so here is Big Daddy V, with Matt Striker, to interrupt. Striker hypes up V, who says the title is his. Cue CM Punk for the handicap match, but first he puts over V and Morrison as legitimate threats, but no one likes Miz. That’s at Cyber Sunday, but he has a partner for tonight.

Miz/John Morrison/Big Daddy V vs. CM Punk/Kane

Well that works. Punk, with the taped up ribs, takes Morrison down to start but a shot to the ribs cuts him off. A monkey flip out of the corner sends Morrison face first onto the mat and it’s off to Kane for some elbows. Punk comes back in with a slingshot hilo but Morrison goes back to the ribs. Miz comes in for some shoulders to the ribs before V stands on Punk’s back. More Miz stomping on the ribs sets up an abdominal stretch as you can’t fault the villains’ logic.

A clothesline puts Punk on the floor and we take a break. Back with Morrison driving Punk hard into the corner as commentary talks about a new business deal between Smackdown and ECW (which explains how Kane can be here). Miz comes in for a bodyscissors but Punk suplexes his way to freedom, allowing the hot tag off to Kane. V comes in as well and misses a charge in the corner, leaving Kane to chokeslam Miz for the pin.

Rating: C. Assuming Kane is sticking around, this is one of the best things that could have happened to ECW. Kane is instantly the biggest name in ECW and someone who could be slotted into the title picture immediately. That’s a smart move for ECW as it isn’t like Kane was doing anything important on Smackdown.

In the back, John Morrison yells at Miz for costing them the match, which might cost Morrison the title match. Morrison challenges him for tonight so Miz knocks him down and accepts.

We recap Miz punting Balls Mahoney’s teddy bear into the crowd last week.

Mahoney can’t believe this is happening because it is so unfair. Kelly Kelly comes in and, after thinking for a second, asks Mahoney out. They leave to make plans.

Vickie Guerrero and Armando Estrada discuss their new deal, with Vickie wanting to know that ECW wrestlers will be on Smackdown. Armando says yell, with Vickie saying that she has a tag team here too. Jesse and Festus come in so Armando gives them a match for tonight.

Jesse and Festus vs. Elijah Burke/Nunzio

Jesse explains Festus again and says ring the bell, which leaves Burke looking scared. There’s a shoulder to drop Burke so it’s off to Nunzio vs. Jesse. That means Nunzio is driven into the corner, where he can bring Burke back in. Jesse gets beaten down for a change and some forearms to the chest give Burke two. Back up and Jesse gets in a few shots of his own, allowing the hot tag off to Festus. Dominance ensues in a hurry and a rocket launcher shoulder gives Jesse the pin on Nunzio. Just a step above a squash as the new team continues to get established.

We look back at Kane’s ECW debut.

Raw Rebound.

Miz vs. John Morrison

Both guys are rubbing their chin on the way in. They go straight to throwing fists to start and the fans say they both suck. Morrison gets the better of things and kicks Miz in the chest but misses a charge into the corner. That lets Miz hit his running corner clothesline but Morrison is right back with a handstand enziguri. They’re both down….and here is Big Daddy V for the no contest, despite him not doing anything before the referee calls for the bell.

V crushes everyone to end the show.

Overall Rating: C. Now that is the kind of change that has been severely lacking around here. ECW has been dying for some fresh blood and throwing in some Smackdown people is a great way to go. I’m not sure how many ECW names need to go to Smackdown, but ECW has been needing the new people around. This is a good day for ECW and I’m more interested in their future than I was coming in.

ECW On Sci Fi – October 9, 2007: The Time Machine Show

ECW On Sci Fi
Date: October 9, 2007
Location: Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, Michigan
Attendance: 7,000
Commentators: Joey Styles, Tazz

ECW didn’t get to do much at No Mercy, as the ECW World Title match lasted about a minute and a half and ended with a lame DQ. That didn’t stop the ECW announcers from having to sit at ringside for about three hours though, because WWE is a bit weird like that. Maybe things are a bit better this week so let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

We open with a recap of the ECW World Title match and Big Daddy V crushing CM Punk after Punk retained the title, even though it might have been more effective to just show the whole match.

Opening sequence.

Big Daddy V vs. Tommy Dreamer

Before the match, V (with Matt Striker) promises to show no mercy. Dreamer gets stomped down in the corner to start and V elbows him in the face. A chop puts Dreamer on the floor but he comes back in with some ax handles. V runs him over again though and hits the Samoan drop. The big elbow completes the squash.

Kevin Thorn vs. James Curtis

Joey’s voiceover about the Divas Search is edited out here. Curtis gets knocked into the corner to start but comes out with a middle rope dropkick. That isn’t cool with Thorn, who takes him down and cranks on his neck to take over. A kick to the back puts Curtis down again and Thorn rips at his face in the corner. Thorn misses a charge though and Curtis hammers away but Thorn pulls him into….I have no idea what the heck that was supposed to be but Thorn follows it up with the Original Sin for the pin.

Rating: D+. That botch was pretty terrible and it was smart to go home as soon as possible. Thorn continues to be someone with a good look and cool finishers but that’s the extent of his value. When you have something that is a little goofy like being vampire or whatever it is supposed to be, the few positives are only going to carry him so far. Thorn reached that point awhile ago.

We look back at Miz revealing that he controls Kelly Kelly’s contract, meaning that if she goes on a date with Balls Mahoney, she’s off the team and out of ECW.

Miz asks Kelly Kelly what she sees in Balls Mahoney but she can’t really answer. Either way, she’s in his corner against Mahoney tonight.

Miz vs. Balls Mahoney

Miz has a rather annoyed Kelly Kelly in his corner. Mahoney, with the teddy bear he gave Kelly, starts fast and hits a running forearm to stagger Miz but misses a charge in the corner. Some shots to the face give Miz two and the cravate goes on. That’s broken up and Mahoney hits a suplex, only to get knocked off the apron and hard into the announcers’ table…for a countout.

Rating: C-. This felt like a way to continue the story without actually doing anything. Miz beating Mahoney by countout doesn’t make either of them look that much better and we will continue with what they’re doing next week. While it’s a bit odd to see Kelly interested in Mahoney, this is at least something for both of them to do.

Post match Kelly goes to check on Mahoney so Miz kicks the teddy bear.

Video on John Morrison, who is back tonight after a month off.

Raw Rebound.

Video on Cyber Sunday.

John Morrison vs. CM Punk

Non-title and Punk has very bad ribs coming in. Morrison gets smart by going after the ribs to start with some knees putting Punk in early trouble. A kick to the head makes it worse but Morrison misses his break dancing legdrop. Morrison goes right back to the ribs (smart) and we hit the abdominal stretch. Punk is back up with a running clothesline to the floor and follows Morrison out, only to get dropped ribs first onto the steps.

We take a break and come back with Morrison pulling on an arm and a leg at the same time. A Rock Bottom onto the knee is countered into a sunset flip attempt, which is broken up with a kick to the bad ribs. You can’t fault the logic here. Punk gets knocked outside again and the ribs are sent into the apron. There’s a gutbuster for two and we hit the chinlock with a knee in Punk’s back.

That’s finally broken up and Punk knocks him to the apron for a shot of his own. Back in and Punk manages a slam with the bad ribs, setting up a leg lariat for two. The GTS is loaded up but Morrison grabs the ropes, meaning Punk has to send him to the apron. Morrison’s springboard kick to the head gets two but Punk knocks him backwards again. Punk goes up, where Morrison crotches him down, setting up a reverse superplex for the pin.

Rating: C+. It was a logical match with Morrison taking apart Punk’s bad ribs, though it is a rather odd thing to see the champion getting pinned clean. This would have been a good place for the countout, though we just saw that in the previous match so it was out for this one. Morrison is someone who would make sense as a challenger to Punk, but we’ve kind of done though so often that it doesn’t work very well. This win should get Morrison one more shot, but I could have gone for a way other than Punk getting pinned.

Overall Rating: C-. Not the most interesting show here, as only the main event felt like something interesting and even then it felt like a bit of a trip back in time. V is still dominant, Miz vs. Mahoney hasn’t moved forward and Punk has to deal with the same guy he had to deal with a month ago. The show wasn’t bad on its own, but it didn’t exactly make things feel interesting going forward.
