Quick Live Thoughts From Wrestlemania XXXVIII Night One

I took in the first night of Wrestlemania XXXVIII and it was about as Wrestlemania as you can get. Your mileage may vary as you can imagine.

After parking in the adjacent Walmart parking lot for free and walking through the absolute maze that is the stadium to get to my seat, one thing became obvious: WWE has forgotten how to warm up a crowd. I got there about an hour into the Kickoff Show and for the most part was treated to a steady shot of the DJ playing music on the huge video screen. No package, no Kickoff Show, no hype videos, no MATCHES IN THE RING.

It’s the same way it went at the Royal Rumble but now I have to listen to bad music. WWE can’t find any two people and throw them out there for ten minutes on the biggest stage of their career? You can’t put Drew Gulak and R-Truth out there for a comedy match? Just ANYTHING but looking around for the better part of two hours? Titus O’Neil coming out for a charity deal was a breath of air and it was something that belonged on a bumper for Peacock. I don’t get this new philosophy but, again, WWE doesn’t think much of entertaining the people once they get in the building.

Smackdown Tag Team Titles: Usos(c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura/Rick Boogs

It’s really hard to comment on this one as Boogs blew out his knee and there is only so much that can be done as a result. Odds are that changed the finish as Nakamura and Bogs winning the titles seemed like a foregone conclusion. It wasn’t a great match in the first place, but my goodness it is sad to see someone as charismatic as Boogs put on the shelf when he is getting this much out of Nakamura.

Drew McIntyre vs. Happy Corbin

McIntyre won, as he should have, and then sliced up the top rope with his sword. The biggest question I have is why an explosion went off when he cut the ropes. Secondary question: why did he cut the rope? What did that rope do to him? He’ll cut that but not cut himself out of the feud with Corbin and Moss? Come on already, by which I mean come on and give McIntyre ANYTHING else to do.

Miz/Logan Paul vs. Rey Mysterio/Dominik Mysterio

So I was sitting with these two guys (father and son) watching the show and one of them had no idea who Paul was. I can’t imagine he was alone, which makes Paul quite the odd celebrity to bring in as he isn’t exactly a household name. Anyway, the villains win because this is Celebrity Mania, but then Miz turns on Paul because…..stop me before I go any further. Throw in a bunch of required Eddie Guerrero tributes because he must be tributed and we move on.

Raw Women’s Title: Becky Lynch(c) vs. Bianca Belair

First things first: they both looked great. I don’t mean attractive (not that they weren’t) but they both had on special gear and looked like they were coming in for the big fight. That is what I want out of Wrestlemania and the two of them delivered. The match itself was also a showdown with both of them working hard, but what I loved was the ending. After Belair won, Lynch fell out of the ring and hit the ground, because she had nothing left and had been defeated. There is something about the visual of Belair celebrating over the fallen champion that makes it feel like what we’re seeing is special and it worked. Great stuff.

Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins

The match itself was immaterial here because of one reason: I got the Wrestlemania feeling. This was my fifth Wrestlemania and it is rare to get that feeling that you are in a moment. From the time the lights went out to the time the opening bell rang, it was goosebumps as Rhodes returning was important. I wasn’t crazy about the match as it went on too long, but they nailed every bit of the atmosphere with this and that is what is going to be remembered. I have no idea what Rhodes is going to do, but the debut was excellent and that is what matters.

Undertaker’s entrance live is still a sight to behold and always will be.

Smackdown Women’s Title: Charlotte(c) vs. Ronda Rousey

Oh where to begin. Well first of all, is ANYONE surprised that Charlotte is the first person to pin Rousey in a singles match? If you are, pay more attention, because Charlotte must have the accolades. The match itself wasn’t great, but Rousey’s comebacks got the fans into it more and more. That being said, I’m a Rousey fan but it’s not there in this run and that is becoming more and more obvious. I don’t know where this is going, though if she doesn’t crank up the intensity (a heel turn could be fascinating), this isn’t going to work.

And then the moment we’ve all been waiting for (Including New Day, Sheamus and Ridge Holland who actually didn’t make it onto this 4+ hour show. If WWE can’t put them on the Kickoff Show and give the DJ a break for five minutes, I’ll lose a good bit of the respect I have left for the company. Get them on there somehow, even if it’s a two minute match.): the return of Steve Austin. After some talking with Kevin Owens, we got this, and I was a bit shocked.

Steve Austin vs. Kevin Owens

Yes, this really happened and while it was No Holds Barred, it was an actual match, as Austin did his usual stuff, took bumps (including a suplex on the floor) and then pinned Owens with the Stunner. Austin didn’t have the explosiveness, but he’ll be sixty in three years and hasn’t wrestled in nearly twenty years so give him a break. What mattered is Austin could have gone out there and juggled kittens to a positive reaction but this was an actual match.

In a word (which has already been used more than once) though, this was special. It was a moment to hear that glass shatter again and know what was coming. I’m not an Austin fan (though I completely respect what he did in wrestling) but I knew what I was seeing live and it made me smile. Oddly enough, at least to date, Austin and the Rock’s final matches have both been impromptu matches taking place in the same building. That’s kind of fascinating.

Overall Thoughts

While I still want Wrestlemania to be one night again (and shortened), I had a pretty good time overall. It needed to be shorter, but the Belair vs. Lynch match, Cody’s return and Austin made the whole thing worthwhile. Now if they can make the second show work as well, we’ll be in a better place, but this was a solid success for the first night.

Full review hopefully going up Sunday, but I can’t promise anything.

Live Thoughts From The Royal Rumble

The wife and I took in the Rumble, which I had been wanting to do in person for the better part of ever. To say it was a bit of a letdown would be an understatement as there wasn’t much done right.  Let’s get to it.

First of all, the lack of dark matches was weird. Above all else, it left us just sitting there, as the only things that played for about an hour were some ads and merchandise plugs. You can’t even put up Rumble By The Numbers or play some clips/video packages? Or just, I don’t know, AIR THE KICKOFF SHOW???

Then the show starts and we get to the biggest problem: the spotlights, which were in our eyes all night long. The glare blocks out most of the ring and even more of the video screen, leaving LONG stretches of the show that I couldn’t see (during Rollins vs. Reigns, I couldn’t see that Rollins was on the top rope because the glare blocked him out). The fans chanted TURN THE LIGHTS OFF multiple times, with other sections doing the same, but they were only off for highlight packages. That alone nearly ruined the show for me, as I could barely see a lot of it. That shouldn’t be a problem but why care about the fans who have already paid?

On to the matches:

Universal Title: Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins

Reigns vs. Rollins started hot and I loved the Shield deal. This played WAY into their deep history, including Rollins using the Pedigree to counter the spear, which was how he beat Reigns for the title in 2015. The DQ ending was lame, but odds are it sets up their rematch in Saudi Arabia. The post match stuff with the chair was great, as Reigns felt like a killer. Good match with a bad ending.

Women’s Royal Rumble

The women’s Royal Rumble….wow this was bad. Above all else, the amount of “nostalgia” entries killed the match, as there were so few who meant anything. Yes Kelly Kelly, Cameron, Alicia Fox and Summer Rae wrestled before, but that doesn’t mean I want to see them again. The fact that WWE had to bring in fifteen names from outside the company tells you how weak the current roster is, as the lack of depth is appalling. If you can’t do a match without having to import half of the lineup, don’t do the thing.

As far as the winner, Rousey is a big splash and will be put straight into the title hunt, but this feels like yet another quick fix rather than building up someone new. They did it last year with Belair and it worked well enough, but then they botched Rhea Ripley (and hey, Charlotte got her again tonight) and it’s right back to the established names. At least this feels fresh, but Rousey is not a long term solution.

Raw Women’s Title: Becky Lynch vs. Doudrop

This was the match where the Wrestlemania sign caught on fire and had to be lowered, leaving me with even less interest in a match I didn’t care about in the first place. Nothing to see here and the fans used it to run various errands.

WWE Championship: Bobby Lashley vs. Brock Lesnar

This didn’t get much time and that was fine, as it was all about the battle of the bulls. They beat each other up, they threw each other around, and they hit each other rather hard. Then Roman Reigns showed up and cost Lesnar the title, as Paul Heyman turned again. It was a lot to pack into a match but it still worked well. I had fun with this and it did what it needed to do for the sake of Wrestlemania, because Reigns vs. Lesnar is happening. Again.

Edge/Beth Phoenix vs. Miz/Maryse

Somehow, this might have been the match of the night and I’m ok with that. Above all else, you can tell that these teams know each other and work well together, which is something you can’t make up. Beth beating up Miz was great and the double spear and double Glam Slam worked. I liked this a lot and now the feud can end so everyone can move on.

Men’s Royal Rumble

Once Lesnar lost, you knew where this was going and it wasn’t much of a shock. The match itself had its moments, but it was lacking a lot of fun. There were three outside names, including Bad Bunny, Johnny Knoxville and Shane McMahon. Throw in some nostalgia acts here and there for some lightheartedness and drop people like Ziggler or the Street Profits. It wasn’t a very good Rumble, but it got them to the point they were looking for in the end, because Reigns vs. Lesnar is happening. Again.

Overall, the experience wasn’t great and the show was worse, but WWE got my money again. This was one of the weakest shows from WWE in a long time and that’s not a good way to get me excited on the Road to Wrestlemania. Which I’m going to as well.

Quick Live Thoughts From Raw

It was the last night and that might be for the best.

There were several areas tarped off tonight, including most of the upper deck on the hard camera side and most of the top of the end zone seats. There were certainly a lot of people there, but it was closer to Smackdown that Survivor Series for empty/covered seats.

No Way Jose and Eric Young had a rather nice match on Main Event which got the fans interested. Well done for bringing that one to life, which is as difficult as it gets.

The Rollins heel turn had to happen as there was nothing he could do to get people to cheer him. It’s WWE listening to the audience for once and going with what makes sense, which is quite the relief all things considered.

Rusev got a nice reaction because he was finally fighting back.

The AOP….not so much, but it was a fine squash.

I was rather surprised at Matt Hardy showing up. It was nice to see him again and he can put people over rather well. Aleister Black is a great example of “how did they manage to mess him up so far?”

I was almost dreading the Humberto Carrillo match as the guy is talented but a barren wasteland of charisma. The four way was fine and it was a very nice surprise to have the title match take place immediately thereafter. Mysterio got a huge reaction on the win and the fans were way into the match, giving it the reaction of the night.

Charlotte vs. Asuka was good, and the chase through the crowd got people’s attention again.

The AOP ending was hated by the live crowd, though fans chanting WHAT’S THE POINT made my head hurt. Are these people just new at wrestling or something?

After the show ended, Drew McIntyre came out and Claymored Owens in the aisle. He challenged the Fiend in a cage and….yeah I think you know what happened.

Overall, a fun night and a better Raw than I have seen in a bit, save for the NXT Invasion show. It was the end to a rather entertaining weekend in Chicago and I would absolutely do this again, especially given the layout and how close I was to the arena every night. It’s certainly better than driving around New Orleans and getting lost in all those turns.

I’m flying back home early tomorrow so I should be back to my normal schedule tomorrow night. I’ve started Takeover so with some luck, that should be up Tuesday. I’ll catch up on Survivor Series and Raw by the end of the week.

Quick Live Thoughts From Survivor Series

It only took me 31 years.

Freshly back from the show (I could really get used to this concept of walking from the arena to the hotel and needing 25 minutes from the time I get out of my seat to the time I’m back and sitting down at the hotel) and it was certainly a different one. There were no major sections tarped off though there were some small pockets of empty seats. It was definitely 95%+ full though and one of the biggest non-Wrestlemania crowds I’ve seen in years.

I won’t go through everything match by match as I’ll save that for the review, but a few highlights:

NXT was over like free beer in a frat house all night long with no one getting anything less than a strong reception.

The women’s Survivor Series match felt a little disjointed at times but Rhea was a STAR, as she has been since she debuted. Fans were a little confused by Shirai and LeRae going out and some were expecting Asuka to come back for a surprise. Either way, Rhea won and it changed the complexion a bit, with NXT now looking like they had a chance.

Cole retaining…..I’m going to need to think about that one for a long time. Cole beating Dunne on normal circumstances is one thing but it’s going to take some mental gymnastics to get my head around a banged up and spent Cole beating Dunne clean. I’m not saying I can’t get there, but it’s going to take some time.

Bryan vs. Bray should have been short like it was and it was booked as well as could have been expected. This worked very well with Bryan fighting as hard as he could and even bringing back the YES chant, but not being enough to overcome that kind of evil. I’m not sure who beats Bray but it’s going to be fun watching people try.

I’ve loved the Survivor Series for years and have always wanted to see one of the matches live. That’s what I got in the men’s match, which felt like an old school Survivor Series match. Corbin stealing pins was a great idea, especially with the one on Ricochet as the fans wanted to kill him. Lee looked incredible out there and got over huge, meaning he should be getting close to the main event scene soon. Heck of a match and exactly what I wanted, but SCREW OFF with getting rid of Walter that fast. If that’s what you bring him in for, what was even the point?

The place came unglued when Rey and Dominick hit the double 619, but you knew it wasn’t happening right after that kickout. Still though, great emotional moment and all it needed to be.

Then there was the main event and…..dang it wrestling fans can be annoying. There were chants of THIS IS AWFUL, CM PUNK, BORING and various similar things. I would bet money that these are the same fans who have been begging WWE to do something new and call Shayna up. She gets a chance in the main event and what does she get? Treated like she’s some lame wrestler on Raw in a bad match.

The match wasn’t great, but good grief people. What else was supposed to close the show? Bray and Brock crushing dreams? Reigns standing tall again, this time over NXT? You had almost everything you wanted and then this is how you treat the main event? WHERE NXT STOOD TALL AGAIN??? They’ll never be happy, and thankfully a lot of fans booed the chants down.

Overall, a rather good night and the match I wanted to see. Reviews for Smackdown/Takeover will hopefully be up Monday with Survivor Series and Raw hopefully the next day or two.

Thank you again for letting me be able to do all this and your patience with the lack of reviews (the WiFi here is pretty horrible).

Quick Live Thoughts From Takeover

The view from the upper deck.

I was sitting in the upper deck looking straight at the entrance. This is a bit annoying as I could barely see the far ring and the equipment was blocking the screen. That’s likely going to make the TV version a heck of a lot easier to watch.

The arena was mostly full with only a few tarped off rows rather than sections on the hard camera side. It was a very hot crowd, as you would expect.

I liked most of the women’s match (the heel turn was great and you could hear the THUD when Kai sent her into the cage around the arena) but it’s going to take a lot for me to buy Ripley and LeRae beating four women, including two champions, on their own.

The triple threat match was great and some of the false finishes were very good. This wasn’t supposed to be reinventing the wheel as you had two big guys who could move and a fighter in Dunne going at it for a prize. They did their thing and it was awesome.

I wasn’t feeling Balor vs. Riddle as much, but Riddle was CRAZY over, as was Balor. They have their work cut out for them getting Balor booed and Gargano is going to be in trouble when he gets back as far as keeping the crowd on his side.

The men’s WarGames was better and MY GOODNESS I haven’t felt so nervous on a spot since I saw Shane dive off the Cell live. That spot at the end was insane and one of the scariest things I can remember in wrestling. Owens being the big surprise was great as you knew he was going to get the superstar pop in NXT. Very good and violent match, which again is going to look better with the televised version.

Overall it was another great WarGames, but not on the top level. This one was really hurt by everything else going on and now we have about three months before….Portland? On a Sunday? I mean…..sure why not.

Quick Clash Live Thoughts

You know I’m not one to talk for a long time about something.

Since I didn’t do Wrestlemania this year and I’m flying to Survivor Series in November, a road trip was in order so I drove the six and a half hours to Charlotte for this one. That’s probably too far but I’m catching Raw in Knoxville tomorrow as a bonus. The card isn’t my favorite of the year as it’s suddenly ALL about the titles, which isn’t the most original idea, but it’s something anyone can get behind.

The show was listed at starting at 6:30 but it got going about five minutes early. The parking lot was very easy to get to and Google Maps can save you on the rather complicated Charlotte roads at night with heavy traffic. It’s a rather nice arena and easy to navigate, which is always a plus for something like this.

There wasn’t much to get invested in early in the show. Cedric Alexander got a great hometown pop and you could see how much it meant to him to be in his hometown. Some of those near falls on AJ had me and I was expecting the Viking Raiders to come out for the save.

Due to a combination of boring nothingness and the show just not leaving much of an impact, we’ll move to Lynch vs. Banks, which was a heck of a fight, though the annual coincidence of the big feud going into a brawl that NEEDS the Cell every September/October is getting to be a little too much to take. Anyway, it’s clear where it’s going and that’s fine.

I was actually surprised when Orton lost and now….I’m not sure where Kofi goes. I’m sure they’ll find a way to do another match, even though Kofi just pinned him completely clean. The match was long but the fans were rather into the ending with Kofi surviving the RKO. I still think LESNAR SMASH is coming though and that’s not good for anyone.

Harper returning to save Rowan was interesting, though I didn’t recognize him at first. Still though, a cool moment and Reigns/Bryan vs. the Bludgeon Brothers is…..I’ll get back to you on that. This needed to be shorter though and it didn’t work like they wanted it to. At least Rowan won though.

Braun Strowman loses in the World Title match again. Just…..why would this be a surprise anymore? That’s what he does no matter what and it’s getting to the point where I don’t care what he does. Strowman has hit a ceiling and he isn’t going to get around it.

Oh and the Fiend is awesome with the mask looking even creepier in person. The fans were leaving when the lights went out and everyone got interested when they knew what was coming.

The review will be up….sometime this week, as I likely won’t be able to get much in on Monday as I’m traveling and making a stop on the way to Knoxville. Tuesday is a shorter travel day but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get it in before Smackdown. Raw could be a few days later as I’ll be trying to catch up and do the live stuff. I’m sorry for the delays but there isn’t much of a way around them in a situation like this.

Live Thoughts From Smackdown

And that takes care of that. Tonight was my last night in New Orleans and that means Smackdown is all that’s left. This is the other version of the post Wrestlemania show and that means a lot could be happening in a very short amount of time. I had a few ideas of what to expect and for the most part, absolutely none of them wound up happening. Let’s get to it.

The dark match saw Becky Lynch beat Ruby Riott in a pretty nice match in about six minutes. The Riott Squad interfered and got sent into each other, setting up the Disarm-Her for the tap. Snappy little match here.

The opening with Shane introducing Paige was nice….if you ignore the fact that SHANE DOESN’T HAVE POWER RIGHT NOW. Unless this was addressed on commentary, Shane has no business accepting Daniel Bryan’s resignation or naming Paige as the new General Manager. Now that being said, Paige was a genuine shock and I think I like the idea. It’s cool to have a woman in the job and, in theory at least, as the ONLY authority figure on the show. She got a great reaction and really, that’s all you can ask for in something like this. Oh and she gave us AJ vs. Bryan, because that’s what a good boss does.

The Usos beat the New Day in a very good match with both teams working well together. They’ve always had chemistry so this wasn’t exactly a shock. The win gives the Usos a title shot, presumably at the Greatest Royal Rumble. Smackdown is going to need some fresh teams in the Shakeup though as these two have fought way too often lately. Still though, very good match.

Naomi beat Natalya after getting into a stupid argument with her. There’s not much else to say on this one, as is the case with most Natalya matches.

Shinsuke Nakamura was asked why he attacked AJ Styles. Nakamura blamed it on being overly emotional and then suddenly couldn’t speak English when he was pressed on the answer. This was hilarious and some of the best talking Nakamura has done since coming to WWE.

Then we had the big segment of the night with Charlotte coming out to praise Asuka for a great match and wondering who she would make magic with next. This brought out the Iconics (formerly the Iconic Duo) of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay to a very strong reaction. They made fun of Charlotte’s speech with Royce getting in some hilarious jokes about Charlotte thanking everyone and then the beatdown was on. Charlotte was thrown over the announcers’ table both ways and powerbombed on the floor….so Carmella FINALLY cashed in the Money in the Bank briefcase to win the Women’s Title.

This took the better part of forever to get to and I’m just glad the stupid thing is finally gone. I get sick of having it hanging over everything and wasting time, especially when it’s almost deflating having Carmella get it after the big match with Asuka. At least it’s gone now though and that means some peace of mind for a few months.

The main event was really all you could expect it to be. They were starting to cook and Nakamura interfered for the DQ. I don’t think anyone was really expecting AJ Styles vs. Daniel Bryan to go to an important conclusion on a Smackdown in Bryan’s first singles match so what we got was more than good enough for the time being. Nakamura kneed Bryan in the head and abused Styles’ testicles after the match. Of note, during a commercial, Bryan missed a Swan Dive. I’m rather stunned that he’s allowed to even think about that move anymore.

And again, so much for Rusev. It’s just not happening and that’s very clear at this point. There aren’t many more over on the roster than he is right now and that means we get Randy Orton vs. Jinder Mahal in ANOTHER match (because the previous ones have worked oh so well) for the US Title. I don’t know what WWE is thinking with this stuff but my goodness it’s annoying to sit through, especially when Rusev has gotten himself over like this.

The post show dark match saw Shinsuke Nakamura defeat Dolph Ziggler. This is the four time I’ve seen those two in a post Smackdown dark match, including last year’s post Wrestlemania Smackdown. Nakamura won in about seven minutes with Kinshasa. If he was supposed to wrestle differently after his heel turn, he didn’t show it here.

Overall, it was a good night and felt like the opposite of last night’s Raw. While Monday was seeing a return every ten minutes, this had the Iconics debuting and Paige being announced as the new GM. That was it for the fresh names appearing and I think I’m ok with that. While Zelina Vega/Andrade Cien Almas and Sanity would have been nice, I can both understand and wait for what might happen in the Superstar Shakeup (though I could also see none of them coming up). All in all, a strong wrestling show and fairly in line with what this Smackdown does every year.
