We’re rapidly approaching TripleMania and a bunch of the roads lead to El Grande Americano vs. Dominik Mysterio. That’s not all we’ll be seeing on the show though and more of the card will need to be built up. Last week saw Psycho Clown attacked by some weird guy, which almost has to tie into the attacks on the Psycho Circus. We might get some more of that here so let’s get to it.

Here are last week’s results if you need a recap.

The opening recap looks at last week’s interview with Dominik Mysterio, who talked about how he didn’t join Los Perros del Mal but turned on El Grande Americano for suggesting that he did. Now he’s with El Ojo, and Americano is going to need some help to beat Mysterio at TripleMania.

Wrestlers are arriving and it’s El Grande Americano getting in a fight with Dominik Mysterio, which spills into the ring. Rey Mysterio tries to break it up and Dominik gets in a low blow. The Mysterios argue and Dominik bails. Americano says his issue with Dominik is about people comparing him to various lucha libre legends. That will never happen, because those legends gave to wrestling but Dominik always takes. At TripleMania, the title returns home for all of the Mexican legends when the belt comes to Americano. As usual, Americano is awesome at these promos and I want to see him win.

Cruiserweight Title: Rey Fenix vs. Noisy Boy

Fenix is defending and we get a hand slap to start. They run the ropes rather quickly to start with Boy being sent outside. The places are switched and Fenix is dropkicked to the floor, setting up the big dive. Back in and Fenix’s kicks don’t do much good as Boy snaps off a running headscissors.

Fenix is right back up with the rope walk kick to the head and a high crossbody. Boy grabs a cool springboard spinning cutter for two of his own but Fenix is back with a nasty Fenix Driver for the same. The Mexican MuscleBuster is broken up so it’s a springboard poisonrana to give Boy two more. A handspring moonsault gets the same but Boy misses a moonsault. That’s enough for the Mexican MuscleBuster to retain at 5:51.

Rating: B. As usual, this was about taking two talented high fliers and putting them in the ring to go nuts for a few minutes. I could have gone for a few more minutes, as Boy was getting rather impressive with some of the things he was doing. It felt more like a way really give him a chance and that worked out well. Rather good stuff here.

Here is Penta (who greets his brother Fenix on the way to the ring) for a chat. He’s here to talk about one person and that is Roman Reigns. The reality is that Reigns has never faced him and Penta has fought for everything. He’s never needed a family or a faction to accomplish his goals so he’s going to win the tournament and then show Reigns what Penta really is.

Cue Los Perros del Mal and Rey Mysterio knows this isn’t good. Commentary points out that Penta is a former member of Los Perros del Mal…and Penta hugs them. Daga welcomes Penta back and explains how things happened back in 2012. But then they lost Perro Aguayo Jr. and now Daga wants to know what Penta meant about not needing a family.

More than ever, Penta needs a family because Reigns isn’t just a man. If they go together, it could all work, because this is about Mexico vs. them. Reigns respects power and there is power in numbers. Penta is offered the shirt and says he’ll think about it, with Daga saying he has until the end of the night. They hurried through this but it still worked.

Raw World Title #1 Contenders Tournament First Round: La Parka vs. Psycho Clown

They trade armdrags to start and it’s time for Parka to dance. The taped up Clown kicks Parka in the corner and shrugs off a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Clown is quickly suplexed into the corner but comes right back with a sunset flip for two. Parka misses a charge and crashes out to the floor, naturally setting up the suicide dive. Back in and the super Spanish Fly so Clown is right back with a Canadian Destroyer to take over again.

Parka dropkicks him into the corner and the turnbuckle pad is taken off, only for Parka to grab a rolling cutter. The referee actually does his job by trying to put it into the corner, where he is quickly crushed. That means the Psycho Driver gets no count so Clown takes off the first layer of his mask…and the lights go out. It’s the big guy from last week who wrecks Clown again and sends him into the barricade and post, with Parka not seeing what happened. The Bone Breaker finishes Clown at 9:08.

Rating: C+. They kind of had to have the attacker come in again here, as there was pretty much no reason to have him show up last week and then not again this week. Parka is a popular star and probably better known to the Raw audience so he makes for a better option in the tournament. The main point here was the big attack again though and the story could get more interesting when we find out some details.

Post match Parka checks on Clown and waves medics down to help.

Penta is considering the shirt when Los Perros del Mal come in. Penta says he respects everything that the shirt and the team mean to him but he’s not sure. If he does this, he wants to make sure there is no dead weight, which doesn’t please Bronco Nima. They agree to face off next week, with Penta’s future in the team on the line. Penta hits the catchphrase, with the fans approving to end the show.

Overall Rating: B+. This show was focused and to the point, with a title match, a tournament match and a bunch of attention on the bigger stories. It was such an easy show to watch and I want to see more from pretty much everything they did this week. This was a rather good show and one of the better they’ve done in a bit. Heck of a job here.

It’s the last night of Verano de Escandalo and that means it’s time to get ready for the build towards TripleMania. That could mean quite a few things, but we do have another title match with the Reina de Reinas Title being defended in a triple threat match. Dominik Mysterio is here too so let’s get to it.

Latin American Title Qualifying Match: Cruz del Toro vs. El Fiscal vs. Psycho Clown

Del Toro and Fiscal tease an alliance but instead Clown helps Fiscal get rid of del Toro. Back in and a pop up powerbomb gives Fiscal two on del Toro but Clown sends Fiscal outside. The dive is broken up so del Toro hits a big dive of his own onto the two of them. They all get back inside with Clown hitting a heck of a clothesline to del Toro, who is right back up with a super hurricanrana to Fiscal.

Clown sunset flips Fiscal into the rope for no count so del Toro covers them both for two each. Back up and Clown Psycho Drivers del Toro onto the apron, followed by a Cactus Clothesline to Fiscal. Cue a masked monster in the crowd to take out Psycho Clown, punch some fans, and rip off part of his mask. That leaves Fiscal to toss del Toro off the top and hit a frog splash for the pin at 7:59.

Rating: B-. This was more about the monster (and likely Psycho Circus attacker) being revealed and taking out Psycho Clown. That’s something we’ve been waiting to see for a long time now and hopefully the future of the story winds up working. Fiscal winning is a good thing too as I’ve liked what I’ve seen from him in recent months.

Rey Mysterio announces a tournament for the right to face Roman Reigns for the Raw World Title on September 14 in Mexico on Monday Night Raw. Yeah that’s big.

AAA was at the Summerslam version of Axxess.

Noisy Boy vs. Jack Cartwheel

They start with an exchange of headscissor escapes and both miss stomps on the apron. Boy is back up with a springboard cutter to take over and kicks Cartwheel in the head. Cartwheel is right back up to strike it out before going up top. A super headscissors brings Cartwheel down, leaving Graves to say that they’re just making stuff up now. Cartwheel sends him outside for the big running flip dive, followed by a Red Arrow for the pin at 4:32.

Rating: B. Oh good grief this was exactly what it should have been, with the two of them flying around and getting to show everything they could do. It made for a heck of a showcase, with Cartwheel getting to look great in the process. Odd name aside, Boy did well here too and it made him look like a bigger star at the same time. Rather impressive stuff here.

Post match here is Karmen Petrovic to signal Los Perros del Mal for the beatdown on Cartwheel. Daga says he warned us of this and here is Damian 666 (an original member of the team) as the newest member. That’s a big addition and he seems happy to be here.

We get a sitdown interview with Dominik Mysterio, talking about how he wasn’t happy with El Grande Americano not trusting him. Everything changed with Americano won Rey de Reyes and Mysterio left AAA for a bit. Americano went on to become the Mexican national hero but Mysterio will beat him at TripleMania.

As for Dorian Roldan, Mysterio joined up with him after Rey Mysterio became GM, because they both know what it’s like to have fathers in powerful positions. Omos will be here with Mysterio next week, and here is Liv Morgan to leave with Mysterio (along with give a hard glare at interviewer Andrea). That wraps up a bit of a loose end, as well as helps get us focused on Mysterio vs. Americano, as it should be.

Reina de Reinas: La Catalina vs. Lady Shani vs. Flammer

Flammer is defending and both of the other two have pinned her in recent months. Rey Mysterio has to leave commentary to “do some GM stuff”, which has JBL rather annoyed. Flammer gets knocked outside to start fast and Shani takes her down again with a dive. Catalina dives onto both of them before hitting Flammer with a running dropkick back inside. Shani is back up to take the other two down but Flammer gets in a running dropkick to both challengers.

That’s broken up as Catalina is up with a double missile dropkick before Gory Bombing Flammer onto Shani for two more. Shani’s spinning sunset flip gets two on Flammer with Catalina making the save. Catalina splashes Shani for two and then spears Flammer on the floor, followed by a running knee to Shani back inside. That’s fine with Flammer, who sends Catalina outside and steals the retaining pin at 9:10.

Rating: C+. This was fine and felt like a house show triple threat, right down to the most basic three way finish imaginable. The women’s division continues to feel like something that doesn’t really matter all that much in AAA and this didn’t do much to change the feeling. The match was completely fine, but nothing that felt like a big deal in any way.

Overall Rating: B-. This is one of those things you have to get used to, as AAA doesn’t exactly go all out for its final nights of a big event. Instead, these things tend to be front loaded and that’s a rather different way to go. The Cartwheel vs. Boy match was a blast and Clown being attacked definitely felt big, but the show itself, as usual, could have been any regular week. That’s just kind of how it works around here though so it’s hard to get that mad.

We’re on to a new taping cycle and the big story coming out of last week was the debut of Damian Priest. That’s quite the big name for AAA and it should be interesting to see what he does in his new surroundings. Dominik Mysterio is supposed to be here as well, but that has been somewhat misleading before. Let’s get to it.

Dragon Lee vs. Jack Cartwheel vs. Mini Vikingo

For a future Cruiserweight Title shot. Cartwheel is knocked down to start and Vikingo snaps off a running hurricanrana to Lee. Cartwheel dives onto both of them before backflipping into a standoff with Vikingo back inside. Another big dive hits Vikingo on the floor but Lee catches Cartwheel going up. Vikingo breaks up Lee’s double stomp with a super Spanish Fly, leaving Cartwheel to get caught with the running knees in the corner.

Lee is back up to stomp Vikingo but Cartwheel’s slingshot splash gets two. Cartwheel escapes Lee’s Styles Clash attempt and Vikingo cuts off Lee’s dive. Vikingo is sent over the announcers’ table, leaving the other two to brawl. Back in and Cartwheel Spanish Flies Lee for two, only to miss a shooting star press. A sitout powerbomb drops Cartwheel for two but Lee hits the Styles Clash. Vikingo is back in with a 630 to steal the pin on Cartwheel at 8:19.

Rating: B. I’m running out of ways to talk about how much fun these three ways have been. You know exactly what you’re going to get with them but they wind up being all kinds of entertaining anyway. That’s all it needed to be and they seem to be trying something with Mini Vikingo. It’s a good way to start the show and it worked again here.

Rey Mysterio goes to see El Grande Americano and warns him about Los Perros del Mal. Americano isn’t backing down but he can’t win this alone. Dominik Mysterio comes in to say Los Perros view Americano as weak and they might be right. Rey is glad to have Dominik here again and leaves. Dominik is ready to face Americano at TripleMania but warns him that it won’t happen if Americano is taken out by Los Perros. Don’t worry though, because Dominik will have his back. Americano isn’t quite impressed.

Mini Vikingo stops Dorian Roldan and Omos, saying they bet on the wrong Vikingo.

Here is El Ojo to deal with the fate of the Latin American Title after the injury to El Hijo del Vikingo. Dorian Roldan says he is here for some sad news, as El Hijo del Vikingo is out for weeks after surgery. Once he gets back, they’re going to sue Rey Mysterio (JBL: “Good.”). For now though, there is going to be a new Latin American Champion and it’s…Omos. Well that got more complicated.

This brings out Rey Mysterio to interrupt, saying he knows what Vikingo is going through as he has had a bunch of knee surgeries in his own right. For now though, Omos has one change to hand over the title…and he does just that. The title is officially vacant and he’ll have an announcement about the crowning of a new champion next week. That was a good head fake but just handing the title to an unstoppable monster wasn’t a great idea.

Damian Priest wants in on the Latin American Title.

It’s time for the weekly Rey Mysterio press conference. Verano de Escalando will be a three week event with a main event each week. First up, Mini Vikingo challenges Rey Fenix for the Cruiserweight Title. Also at the show, Lady Shani and La Catalina are challenging Flammer for the Reina de Reinas Title. Finally, we’ll have a #1 contenders match for the Mixed Tag Team Titles, with Faby Apache teaming with Joaquin Wilde against La Hiedra/Laredo Kid, with the title match at Verano de Escalando. More coming next week.

Money Machine vs. Noisy Boy/Epydemius Jr.

Plata and Noisy start things off with Noisy working on an early wristlock. Plata easily sends him down but Noisy backflips away into a quick pose. Oro comes in to headlock Jr., who flips away into a similar pose as the team seems to have a trend. Jr. grabs an armbar to hand it off to Noisy, whose assisted spinning backsplash gets two.

Plata grabs Noisy from the apron though and a suicide dive cuts off Jr. on the floor. A double big boot gets two on Noisy, who rolls underneath a double clothesline and dives over to tag Jr. Noisy’s spinning super hurricanrana brings Plata down so Jr. adds a big running flip dive. Oro gets dropped with a poisonrana but Plata is back in to elbow Jr. Everyone is down…and here are Los Perros del Mal for the double DQ at 8:00.

Rating: B-. This was a weird choice for a main event but AAA can be a weird show at times. There’s nothing wrong with going in a different direction, though it felt like a matter of time until the real story took place. That’s not a bad thing either, as I wasn’t sure where the whole thing was going. At least we got some nice flips and dives in the meantime.

Post match the beatdown is on and Los Perros call out El Grande Americano. Cue Americano with Los Americanos but the three of them are beaten down as well. Dominik Mysterio runs in with a chair for the real save and issues the challenge for a tag match. JBL is stunned as Americano and Mysterio shake hands to end the show. This doesn’t sound logical for Americano but it’s a long way to TripleMania.

Overall Rating: B-. The point of this show was to set up some things for the future, with Verano de Escalando starting to come together. The good thing is that even those special shows aren’t overly long so there is only so much that needs to be done. As usual, this show didn’t wear out its welcome, which makes even the less important shows like this one easy to watch.
