Thought of the Day: You Can Observe A Lot By Just Watching

As taken from the sage of wrestling: Steve Austin. On one of his podcasts, Austin talks about finding a spot backstage where he could watch every match on a show to see what the people had been doing that night so he wouldn’t be doing the same spots.  For instance, if five people had worked on an arm that night, Austin would go after a lower back or a neck.  It’s such a basic idea but it could keep the fans slightly more entertained and have them more interested in your match.  Now you have people playing video games during the show and the matches get a lot more generic.  As always, Austin knows his stuff.

Thought of the Day: WWE And Marketing

Get used to this idea with the Network coming.WWE is known for pounding ideas into our heads over and over and over on Raw and Smackdown.  Be it the App, whatever TV show they’re hyping up or any product of the week, you’re going to hear about it every five minutes at worst.  Here’s the thing: that’s a very smart move and exactly what WWE should be doing.  As annoying as it is to fans who watch all the time, I would be shocked if any regular viewer of WWE programing couldn’t rattle off complete details of whatever WWE is hyping at the moment.

On the other hand, look at TNA.  How many things have they had (Video Vault, Xplosion etc) that were never talked about?  Those are ideas that could bring in revenue to the company but instead we’re treated to Tenay and Tazz being “witty.”  WWE pounds ideas into our heads and it’s a big reason why they’re as big as they are.

Thought of the Day: WWE Is Rocking Right Now

Really, they are. They have great talent down in NXT, a solid (though confusing) main event storyline, part timers doing what they should be doing, John Cena and Sheamus waiting in the wings, and Punk/Heyman owning the world.  What more can you really ask for?

And cue everyone saying that WWE sucks.

Thought of the Day: We Need A Good Old Fashioned Masked Man

Not like Kane, but rather…I mean a guy in a mask who runs in and messes with stuff until running off again.  It’s been used for decades and works quite well every time.  There are a bunch of simple stories like that which can do wonders for the booking, but instead we get the same four ideas or so (how many times can we have the corrupt authority figure, the guy wanting RESPECT and turning heel as a result, “tough love” or the automatic rematch clause?  How often do we get anything beyond an offshoot of one of those ideas?) with people caring less and less each time.

Use some old ideas and freshen things up a bit.

Interesting note: apparently I wrote this up back in May and hit save to draft instead of publish.  I never have been the best tech guy.

Thought of the Day: Just Win Baby

As much as it hurts me to quote the Raiders.I’ve been watching Nitro and Thunder from 1998 lately and one of the major stories has been the rise of Booker T.  He’s gone from being a tag team mainstay to the TV Champion, defending his title at least once and often twice a week.  Every week he gets more and more popular with his matches getting better and better.  There’s a very simple explanation for why he’s getting over: he’s winning.  There’s no trick gimmick to it, there’s no secret surprise, there’s no way to trap the audience.  The fans simply respond to a guy who wins his matches.  In other words, WCW wasn’t cutting Booker’s legs off in case he got hot when the company didn’t want him to but rather embraced it.  Imagine that concept.

Thought of the Day: Make Their Jaw Drop

This is a tale of a Christmas from long ago.About eight years or so ago I was watching Tribute to the Troops when my dad came over.  Now my dad is the kind of guy that doesn’t impress easily.  He thinks everything was cooler when he was younger and that very little entertainment today is actually entertaining.  When he came over, John Cena was lifting Big Show up for the AA.  My dad’s jaw dropped and he was clearly impressed.

The moral to the story: show us something impressive that is going to catch some eyes, not the same stuff that is only going to interest people already watching.  More on this topic when I have a bit more time.

Thought of the Day: A Simple Animal

A little on Batista.Think back to Big Dave Batista.  He was the face of Smackdown for years, he was a monster, he won a bunch of world titles, he was called the future in Evolution, he was the biggest star in the company for a good while……and there wasn’t much to him.

Think about it: what was there to Batista’s character other than he’s big, he’s strong, and he wins world titles?  Yeah he’s aggressive and an animal, but there really wasn’t any depth to him.  Here’s the thing though: that’s all you need a lot of the time.  Batista was a big scary monster who could destroy anyone that came at him.  How many people would stop flipping though the channels if they saw some monster like him powerbombing someone in half?  It’s a simple idea but it made a pile of cash for the WWE.

Simple is more sometimes.

Thought of the Day: TNA Is Not Competition For WWE

This is one of those ideas that makes no sense when you actually think about it.The common statement you hear is TNA needs to stay around to be competition to WWE.  TNA has been around for over eleven years and has never, not once, come close to competing with them.  Someone that thinks they have been, please tell me how they’ve competed.  Simply being in the same business and producing the same kind of material isn’t competing.  By that logic a seven year old writing a story in school is competition for Stephen King.  TNA’s highest rating ever for Impact is a long distance from Smackdown’s lowest number in years.  About three times as many people watch Raw as watch Impact.  The PPV buys are so lopsided it’s unreal.

TNA doesn’t compete with WWE.  They don’t come close and they won’t for a very long time.  If TNA goes out of business (and no I don’t think they are anytime soon), WWE isn’t going to be breathing a sigh of relief.  TNA is a promotion which has done better than most companies, but to even think they’re a serious competitor to WWE at this point or any point in their history is laughable.

Thought of the Day: It’s The Story, Not The Characters

The Divas are teaching me something.AJ vs. Kaitlyn started out as a feud I had zero interest in and that I usually rolled my eyes at.  Over time though, the story has won me over.  I still don’t care about Kaitlyn, but I care about how she’s been abused and made fun of and I want to see her destroy AJ because of it.  It’s the first story in the Divas division in months if not years and it’s working like a charm.  Think about it: how many times has the Divas Title match been set up by a one off #1 contenders match or a lame battle royal?  Now how many times has it been because of some personal issue?  Which do you care about more?

It’s the story that sells the feud.

Thought of the Day: Pay Up

This is something TNA has been doing more often and it could be used again. On some of their One Night Only shows, TNA has had matches be for a cash prize.  This is something you would see a lot more of back in the day and is an effective idea to keep people out of title matches.  Just say the winner of a match gets $25,000 and you have a one night gimmick.  It worked back in the day and it can work again.
