As a fan of the original ECW, I was excited to see the ECW guys show up, and take over like they did. I just happened to catch it as it was happening while surfing channels. I hadn’t watched wrestling since the fall of the previous year when the ECW was cancelled. It got me excited about wrestling again, until Steph came out, and was the owner of the ECW. They had me, and lost me in one episode of Raw. I tuned into SD, and that was the last I seen for about a decade. Stephanie to Paul Hayman “You can call me boss now”, no thanks, I’ll watch something else.

I would have rather them just leave the ECW out of it(and let it die, and go away as something only people like me will ever remember) than bring it into the angle the way they did.

The ECW shouldn’t have been bunched up with WCW, that was like water, and oil. To make it worse was the way they booked the Alliance to be like 80’s heels. Low down dirty cheater cowards that everybody hated. ECW should have stood on its own as a scrappy group of rebels that didn’t have the firepower to take out the WWF(Jericho, Kane, Taker, Angle, Rock), but managed to be a thorn in the side of the WCW, and a good fight for the WWF. ECW should have been somewhere in between heels(WCW), and faces(WWF), with Austin turning on WWF at Invasion to join WCW, only to swerve them to join the ECW and make them a serious threat.

I know most of the WCW guys were tied up in contracts, but what about Lex Luger, and Jeff Jerrett? Weren’t those guys free? They could have brought in somebody to give WCW a better heel prescence. At the end of it, ECW should have ended up aligning with the WCW just before Survivor Series, only to swerve them, and help the WWF put them away for good(much like what happened during the Attitude Era, without the swerve).

I remember watching this show that night, and when RVD and Tommy Dreamer showed up, plus the ECW involvement, my jaw dropped also. I also remember calling one of my good friends and told him about it. He couldn’t believe it either. When Stephanie came out at the end, although she looked good that night, I was a little underwhelmed by the continuous involvement of the McMahons at that point. Oh yeah, in my opinions, this Raw is nowhere near one of the best Raws ever. Maybe one of the best in 2001, but definitely not in the top 10 of Best Raws ever.

And this is why the mess that was the Invasion angle is the biggest balls up Vince will ever make. I remember seeing highlighs of this and the two swerves with WCW and ECW on this show were always awesome.

It should have kicked off something awesome.

I couldn’t agree more with this being one of, if not THE best Raw, when it comes to story and drama.

In fact, I just rewatched the ECW interference/reforming, as well as the final “match” on youtube.

It’s amazing how something can start off so hot and with tons of potential, and then fail so quickly.
