Both WM 4 & 5 from Atlantic City are interesting ones Crowd wise. Like you said they seemed to be flat at certain points but do get into the Big Matches and for Macho Man’s Title win here.

One thing I like about WM 4 is Savage & Liz coming out in 4 different attires for each Match.

What is an alternative to the tournament to consider? I was thinking Dibiase buys the belt and defends against savage then they run with Andre/hogan II. Guess the undercard would fill it self out.

Hogan vs. DiBiase and Savage vs. Honky would have been the best places to go. The rest of the card could have been set up, but the show would have DESPERATELY needed to be trimmed down by an hour.

This was an idea that was good in theory horrible in execution, as it results in tons of inconsequential, too short (or too long) matches, etc. Also, as the most high profile Mania for Ted DiBiase as a championship threat, he really should have had a show where he could cut villainous heel promos and scheme all the way through the show to beat Savage. While I hate Hogan’s cheating in the end, I’m okay with it as a main event at Mania, but the tournament format undercuts the build to it.

By the way, what’s your take on the crowd here? I think the crowd here and next year are both terrible, but I can’t decide if it’s the crowd’s fault or the sluggish proceedings.

    • Thomas Hall says:

It’s the crowd’s fault as they’re mainly Atlantic City high rollers or casino goers instead of wrestling fans. It’s the same at basketball games at Rupp Arena: the real fans are stuck in the upper deck while the rich people get to sit in the good seats because it’s good social status.

  6. Thanks for the nostalgic ride KB. This was actually the first WWF PPV I ever rented from the local video store when I was a kid and always has a place for me because Macho Man was my favorite wrestler. But you’re right, sitting through this even as a kid was a chore because it was just too long.

On an interesting note, as even though Savage and Gang had too short of match at Wrestlemania IV, they had a fun match in Savage’s title defense on Saturday Night’s Main Event.
