At least in North America. According to Meltzer, it had 750,000 North American buys, putting it slightly ahead of last year’s show. It also made approximately $5 million more than last year.
WWE really is dying with Cena on top though. No one would EVER pay to see him in the main event of Wrestlemania in a match where it was pretty obvious he was winning the title.
I’m rather surprised but also rather pleased with these results so far.

And if you agree inflation has a play in domestic market value, then basic economics means that a company’s revenue must be increasing to negate rising inflation. For that reason alone WM numbers should be upward trending , if not then a company is making less money than the year before on its flagship event and so on.
If this year’s numbers are accurate, the last two years’ shows will have been the highest grossing and selling shows ever. If that’s not going up, what is?
with growing population, increase exposure to American television in developing and far east markets, and even more kids coming into the fold – year over year increase is a MUST for an entertainment business like WWE.
Its the same concept as yoy increase in the net global box office numbers for movies are always trending up.
The day this stagnates, WWE will be in big trouble.
Box office numbers trend upward due to constant increase of ticket prices. Also, if this were to become stagnant at $72M a year, they would absolutely not be in trouble. At all.

Increase competition + growing costs and not to mention inflationary markets will eat away at a stagnant company. Unless the goal is for WWE to be an ultra niche product, they NEED this product to grow.
And the box office and ticket prices, bro, the ticket prices increase due to inflationary requirements. Yes market has a role, but compare ticket prices from 20 years ago to today, and compare the change in inflation and strength of the dollar – there’d be very little difference.
MAIN reason for box office growth is increased exposure of the product across NA and the world.
Regarding the box office, the main reason is absolutely due to inflation, rather than worldwide exposure as the majority of the time you’re reading domestic gross reports anyway.
And if the WWE makes $72M a year off Wrestlemania for the rest of eternity, they will in NO WAY feel as if the success was inferior to the year prior, “bro.”
These numbers are just in North America. Everything you are saying is well and good, but doesn’t affect these numbers at all.
sorry, I don’t understand your comment. Whether you look at it macro or micro – you need the WWE pulling in higher numbers and trending upwards in a market place which is being littered with direct (reality programming, UFC) and indirect (general entertainment business + blurring of the lines between over the air programming vs internet).
Perhaps in time the numbers will go up. It seems like they’re in autopilot and have been for some time.
This year’s match between Rock and Cena was nothing special but no one can dispute the fact that the match-up was one of the biggest draws ever. Good for WWE, but WM 29 was average at best.
He still does nothing for me. Good on them for making some green though.
