The Mania 16 main event was a cluster. It was The Rock and Triple H’s year, should have been one on one. Just like this Summerslam main event.

Mania is different. Mania should have been one on one. Summerslam didn’t need to be. We’re going in circles at this point. Agree to disagree.

My initial post was a story I heard, not sure why you chimed in in the first place. Especially considering you don’t seem to grasp simple wrestling concepts. Refrain next time.

You don’t understand business. But hey who cares about money when we have to put over all the heels right now. We can’t possibly save putting a guy over one of the two biggest stars ever. He needs to go over him now.

Mick Foley was for the extension of Rock/HHH to Backlash (not even due to him being in the main event, he actually tried to talk Vince out of putting him in that match). This was a good business decision. Now I am for ignoring business at Mania but every other PPV, business can trump story. With that being said, they had a solid reasoning behind HHH winning at WM 16. I don’t blindly agree with Foley but when he says something is a good decision, I’ll listen. I can see why he was for the extension in this case.

You tried to argue for wasting a money feud because they can just do it later and who cares about wins and losses right? Austin lost but not to HHH. That saved Austin vs HHH. Something WWE can learn today. They didn’t setup a feud by having someone lose to the guy they are feuding with. Look at Cena vs Rock. That first match was something a lot of people looked forward to. A lot of people wanted to see it. Rock won clean. People still looked forward to the second match but with way less enthusiasm. They already got to see the match with a clean finish. Doesn’t mean you can’t ever do a feud again after a clean finish. It just means the demand for the second match will usually not be as strong.

An example that I do agree with beating someone was when HHH beat Austin before WM 17. I assume that was to setup HHH vs Austin after WM 17 but the plans got changed. That would have made sense. Austin goes on to beat Rock. HHH can go on to claim he beat Austin and should have the title. Both guys looking strong going into the feud.

I chimed in because Austin refusing to job is a stupid rumor and you are an idiot for even bringing it up. Same can be said for me bringing up the Ventura rumor. I also chimed in with a logical reason as to why HHH did not beat Austin in a one on one match.

Foley also was in agreement for being a transition champion. Transition champions were a common practice in the old days. You could save feuds that way.

Putting Triple H over the biggest star at SummerSlam would have been a much bigger deal than him beating an enhancement player on Raw for the title, thus elevating HHH. I’m sure even you can understand that.

Austin/HHH would draw money no matter what during the hottest time in the company’s history. I’m gonna assume even you can understand that as well.

“I’m sure even you can understand that.” Hmm, me thinks you’re calling me dumb.

Your plan is to give the match away even though it can be done later without hurting the buyrate.

There is a reason HHH won at Wrestlemania 16. It was so they had a reason to do a match at Backlash. Extend the feud and get more buys. Could Rock have won and done a rematch later? Sure. But if you wanted to see Rock win it, you had to pay for another PPV. Can HHH beat Austin by himself? Can HHH be stopped by Austin? Can HHH overcome Austin? Buy No Mercy to find out!

Or your way. Can HHH win again? Can HHH beat the guy he just beat? Do you want to pay for the same match you literally just saw*? Do you care who wins because you already saw HHH win the title from Austin and have seen Austin win it before? Make sure to tune in and see something you have already seen!

      HHH got over just fine.

*Yes HHH vs Rock at Mania 16 was essentially a one-on-one match (they eliminated the other two guys pretty quickly). However, what you were paying for at Backlash was Rock finally beating HHH and winning the title. It would have been better for Rock to win at WM 16, but this way they extended the feud and gave people a reason to want to buy again.

      • Ted says:

Still say triple h winning at mania 16 was the wrong call. Triple was getting his match at backlash anyhow. Heels should not be winning the Main event of wrestle mania.

        • Greg says:

I agree with that. I was just explaining their reasoning behind it. The hook of Rock getting the title was better than a HHH rematch.

  3. M.R. says:

Never know how true wrestling rumors are but supposedly the main event was supposed to be just Austin vs HHH before Austin nixed it, refusing to lose to Trips. I really hope that’s true.

    • M.R. says:

For comedic purposes only I should add — a single match between Austin and Triple H would’ve been fantastic as they would end up proving the following year or so.

    • Greg says:

Ventura supposedly didn’t want to raise the hand of a heel. Plus it made sense. Transition champion. Have Foley put over HHH. Then have Austin/HHH feud later when Austin is healthy.

      • M.R. says:

Everyone’s heard the Ventura story. I call bullshit. And why the hell would you have Foley put over HHH when Austin putting him over at the 2nd biggest show of the year would mean way more. Not to mention Foley put HHH over at the Rumble four months after this show.

        • Greg says:

Money. You can do a HHH/Austin feud later. Putting HHH over Austin would have hurt that money train. Austin has a reason to challenge HHH. They did a match at No Mercy later in the year. I forget how that went (I think someone interfered). I assume there was a longer Austin/HHH plan in place but got derailed by Austin’s neck (since Austin got taken out at the next PPV).
