Why did you rate Benoit/Orton a notch lower? Its not a bad Summerslam but I think the main thing that brings it down is the Toronto Crowd. I have no idea what was in the water that night.

I remember this as the first PPV I ever ordered as I saved up money working at my uncle’s Harley shop in the summer and split the cost with my friend and watched it in his parents basement( so cliche yet we were 13)

I remember loving this show as a kid. A lot of that stems from going to see a Raw house show in April right after Wrestlemania in Cape Girardeau, MO. It was incredible experience because Benoit was so friggin over and HHH played to a 5,500 person crowd of unabashed marks and in my bias memory it feels like those hot crowds in the 80s you see encapsulated in videos. But anyway I remember that Jericho used the misogynist acronym to end all misogynist acronyms at this show testing it out before TV in the feud with Trish/Christian so I felt special as though I had seen a sneak preview of the finished product. This was also a test run house show for Eugene. It wasn’t clear to most of the audience that he was playing a mentally challenged wrestler as we just thought he was some charismatic dopey doughy fan wannabe guy. He jumped into the crowd and hugged people and used them as shields against local jobber X. Anyways 13 year old me was also hooked when Eugene made it to Raw and had way to much invested in HHH heel of heels vs the retarded wrestler. Good lord this is so stupid and offensive looking back.

I also remember my friend and I both being super marks with a touch of smark by Summerslam. I think we both yelled out “Cheap Finish” at the Undertaker DQ. But we loved the Smackdown matches as Cena was still fun and we both had WCW hangover affection for Kidman and Mysterio tagging together and Eddie in general. We also both realized that Randy was from St. Louis and decided that we loved him and would root for him as a face knowing there is no way he would win here( this is in rural Missouri mind so hometown pop territory). When he won we were both generally shocked and thrilled! So I remember this Summerslam way to fondly as a great night of entertainment well worth my 25 $ investment.

Triple H literally beat Orton the following month? I remember him winning their blowoff match at the Rumble but I thought Orton held onto the belt a bit longer than that. Damn.
