I was pretty surprised they announced John Cena/Shinsuke for next week but at the same time you want people to watch right? I think one of two things happen-

1.Cena wins with Baron Corbin interference.

2.Nakamura wins next week and then wins at Summerslam but Corbin cashes in MITB gaining some major heat which continues their feud for the Title as the main fall program for Smackdown.

Pretty nice surprise when Chris Jericho returned. Smackdown was much better than Battleground i would say.

“One more thing: two years ago, imagine being told that you would see John Cena vs. Shinsuke Nakamura in a #1 contenders match on free TV to face Smackdown World Champion Jinder Mahal at Summerslam. Wrestling is a funny place sometime.”

This is one of the best examples of that “wrestling is a funny place” feelings I think I’ve ever seen. Good lord.

(Also, first time commenter checking in to say: love the reviews Tommy. You’re a machine).

    KB,

I’m wondering if Jericho came back because of the potential botched ending at the PPV. Maybe they didn’t want KO to lose so soon so they call in Jericho to save the day, and take the fall on a one night deal.

    Thoughts?

I honestly feel like we’re heading to more multiple person matches at Summerslam. WWE has given me little faith to believe otherwise. I can see Mahal interfering to lead to a triple threat at Summerslam and a repeat of tonight’s main event for the US title also. I’d be fine with that one as the match tonight was great.

As for Mahal/Cena/Nakamura, Mahal just needs to go as champion. I applaud them for trying something different, but he’s just boring. He’s not particularly bad in anyone area, but he’s doing a retread of a gimmick (which certainly isn’t uncommon in wrestling), that has been done so much better by others.

An idea from that throwaway tag match, why not try to give some of these random teams a try? Zayn is spinning his wheels and Dillinger’s pop ends once his theme stops. Why not see what they can do? The Usos and New Day will eventually have to stop feuding.

Overall, SD did it’s job of starting the road to Summerslam.
