After the outrage died down, I was just left feeling sad. I’m still outraged over the ending, it’s just that sadness over seeing the special mystique of HIAC completely die out has set in.

In my opinion, it’s a match WWE shouldn’t have run with its own PPV each year, it’s something special they should have whipped out every few years for a few special feuds but WWE has so many problems these days and making the special feel ordinary is one of them. With the rarity aspect of it gone, what was left was the brutality of the Cell but that’s gone now. Even though WWE has put out word that the ending was ref stoppage and not a DQ, it’s not like that matters. What? As fans, we’re supposed to be soothed by word games and technicalities? You know one reason why everyone thought the match was a DQ? Because, like so many other matches that wind up getting stopped, they didn’t announce the ending if it was a DQ or what. WWE is too damn lazy to give a crap about any real degree of continuity.

If Wyatt had been severely injured, that’d be a completely different story but he wasn’t and everyone knew that he wasn’t. it was a cheap ending that somehow, someway someone thought would get over and I have no idea as to why because it’s not like we haven’t seen far, far, far more brutal matches. If you want to go for this sort of ending in this sort of match, then one or both of these mothers needs to come off as though they’re half dead; there needs to be a LOT of blood and not just the crimson mask but also some nicks and cuts on the arms, the legs, etc., the ringside area needs to look like a warzone, some really big moves and really big spots have to have been hit, enough time has to have passed to make it seem like that it’s been going on long enough for the participants have really dug down deep. Frankly, a ref stoppage for a match like this is probably much too unsafe in WWE these days so it’d just be much simpler to just give the fans a great brawl, which would’ve been just fine, and be done with it. Instead, we were basically treated to a night of a thousand stomps.

I have been watching wrestling for 31 years and 2 months. I have seen every wrestling show there is to see. That was the worst main event I have ever seen. Not only was the finish bad but also the story they were trying to tell was too ludicrous. The cell does reach a low point too when it is being used to START a storyline. Back to the finish, it didn’t even look as bad as they wanted it. For example, is opening a ladder and sandwiching a chair in there going to have any effect at all? Says a lot about today’s superstars when Mick Foley flies off the top of the cell and FINISHES his match. Anyway, sorry for the rant KB…..oh and one other thing, that mallet looked ridiculous, hope that doesn’t make a reappearance.

One report had fans chanting “AEW” after the DQ ending and before Fiend put the mandible claw on Rollins. Did you catch that?

    • Thomas Hall says:

I didn’t but I’ve read that in a lot of places. Doesn’t surprise me in the slightest and it was well deserved.

Head in hands reading that ending of the Main Event due

  5. Guy Incognito says:

I think that main event deserves an Agoobwa rating. I don’t think I’ve had my intelligence insulted as a fan since…the dying days of WCW?

  6. Dom says:

I’m assuming this means Bray will be on SD. That’s probably the reason for the ending. If so, why did they book themselves into such a stupid corner? If that isn’t the reason, then they are just stupid.

  7. Prophet says:

People were already turning on Rollins and this surely doesn’t help out in that department. Expect him to be booed out of the building on Raw. People want Wyatt to win the title. Rollins is the guy standing in the way. He definitely gets the backlash of all of this tomorrow from the live crowd.

  8. Jay H says:

Yeah i can’t defend the finish either and i get what they were going for to protect both guys to more than likely continue the Feud.

Bad finish aside i did like the Womens HIAC, the Tornado Tag, and Randy Orton/Mustafa Ali. Plus im glad Asuka & Kairi Sane won.

I had a long response written out, but it’s not worth it. It was a dumpster fire after the first two matches. With FOX, USA, and a Saudi Arabian prince as the real heads of creative, I don’t expect things to get better any time soon.

Very well said. It sucks the Cell became a crappy gimmick. Used to be so suspenseful of a match. This company sucks right now. Shows seem so apathetic and uninspired.

  11. Hamler says:

That last match just brought the whole show down. What a slap in the face to the Cell’s legacy and those who helped create it. Garbage call to end like that.

    Very well said KB.
