So what makes this Danielson vs Page match good booking compared to Nash defending his title in his first defense against Hart?

    • Thomas Hall says:

I’m not sure I get what you’re asking. Why wouldn’t Page vs. Danielson be good booking?

If I remember correctly, people got all up in arms after WWE cut the nuts off Nash in his first title defense against Bret Hart by making it go to a tie.

I’m getting hard-core deja vu vibes from this match. It’s cut the nuts off Hangman Page in my opinion.

        • Thomas Hall says:

I really didn’t get that vibe from it. I wouldn’t have done the draw, but it seems to be setting up a three way with Omega anyway.

At the beginning of the opening contest, Taz pointed out that the first title defense is the most important one and sets the tone for his entire reign, a point that both Tony and Excalibur wholeheartedly agreed. Adam Page could not win his first title defense. What a shitty tone to set. I’m surprised they’d put Page in that position as they usually protect their champions better.

Also, the match would have been better suited to be 45 minutes tops.

    • Sebastian Howard says:

45 minutes wouldn’t have made sense because its a 60 minute time limit. You have to have reasons for why the match ends, you can’t just make up arbitrary times when the match ended on a draw and it was important to the finish. I’m not even arguing that it wouldn’t have been better with time cut off but it doesn’t make sense in the context of the time limit and whats been used as time limits before in wrestling. Usually its 30 min time limit or 60 min or none, not 45. Now as to your point about Hangman I don’t think Page looked weak from not getting a clean pin because he looked like he had the match won before time expired. I’m much more concerned with how this makes Bryan looks. He’s the heel challenger for the title and couldn’t beat Hangman in his title match and looked like he was totally about to lose. Why would I want to see a rematch between them when I’ve practically seen Hangman beat him already and Hangman has nothing to gain from another match anyway. If they had had Bryan kick out at 2 after clothesline and then time limit went out at least that would make me somewhat more interested in it because Bryan wasn’t completely saved by the bell but nope, he just looked completely beat. Again no real reason to want see the feud continue.

I’m not a fan of AEW’s thing were they tend to put the Main Event match out as the first match. Maybe it was just the length of it this time, but I was burnt out from the rest of the show after Page/Danielson.

I can’t imagine it does any good for their ratings. I get Tony’s rational to give them something good to start so they’ll keep watching, but I think the opposite is true. Once the match people want to see is over, some change the channel.

    • Sebastian Howard says:

I agree with your point but I think they were banking on people expecting Punk to show during or after mjf match.

“ Another powerbomb has Shawn Spears telling Wardlow to get the pin already, but Wardlow hits another one for the win at 1:23.”

    He won 123 in 1:23

Danielson/hangman was good obviously but the finish doesn’t make me want to see a rematch. Hangman had Bryan beat before the time limit went out and Bryan’s the challenger not the champ so why would I want to see a rematch between them? Even if Bryan had kicked out and time limit went out it would’ve made me care a little bit more but Bryan just looked completely beat before it ran out. I still think it was a bad idea to give page title in the first place and we could’ve been building to Bryan/omega 2 or done it here.
