New Column: Yeah Not A Fan

Another fan apparently doesn’t live up to some imaginary standard.

This is probably going to be the last column for the time being.  I’ve done over 430 of them over 8+ years and they’re becoming more and more of a chore.  I tend to spend more time thinking “dang I have to do that too” and dreading it more, which is the sign that it’s time to switch things up.  I might do some short form stuff in the future, but for now, this is pretty much it.

Like I always say : Everyone take what he want from wrestling, I have friends who love 5 stars matches, athleticism, choregraphed sequence… For my part, I always love characters, storylines and the open-air theater and sometimes kitshy side of wrestling.

I’m from England and watched golden era WWF VHS and occasional present day programming. It was gifts from my mum growing up She would watch the tapes with me despite hating them and thinking it was a load of shite (She was scotish) but she would watch with me every Saturday moring because she loved me and wanted to see me happy. Meltzer and his band of litle cohorts need to understand most fans have lives and intrests outside of wrestling and can’t aford to watch it 24/7 doesn’t mean they aren’t fans. The 1 who truly isn’t a fan is Dave Meltzer if he was he wouldn’t enable this toxic behavior from his followers. He may need to think about retiring. World class historian but his opion on current wrestling has more holes in it every single year, if he retired tomorrow I get the feeling the wrestling fandom would be a much happier place.

It’s a dumb point either way. I don’t think anyone just wants to watch “women’s wrestling” the same as they don’t want to watch “men’s wrestling”. I typically want to watch the wrestlers I know and am invested in. If I want to watch Jamie Hayter, Toni Storm, Jade Cargill, Britt Baker and Athena, but am only getting to see one of them a night, that isn’t solved by watching a Stardom event of entirely different wrestlers.

Nice article. However, you got me wondering what your original piece re: the Shannon Moore/Jimmy Wang Yang tag-team from the late 2000’s was going to be about exactly?

In short, both WWE/AEW have all kinds of people sitting around doing nothing. Throw them together in a team like that and see if you can get something out of it.

I stopped listening to Meltzer for the exact reason of his response to the fan in your article. Also, I keep hearing how Dave has basically been an unpaid shill for AEW since their inception. That true, or can you at least see how some may perceive that?

    • Thomas Hall says:

I don’t know if that’s true, but I can absolutely see why people would believe it (and I’m not sure I don’t).
