These are the ones that you remember. A match has a lot of different moving parts but sometimes something is going to happen that you remember more than anything else. The big spots are the ones that make the highlight reels, most of the time for better than worse. That is something worth remembering a lot of the time and while some of them were cut off in 2020, there were still some good picks. Let’s get to it.

As usual, in no order until the end.

Io Shirai’s Trashcan Moonsault Off Of WarGames

There is something to be said about someone taking a trashcan and diving backwards off of a cage onto a bunch of people. I think the description says it all, because that sounds completely insane. Shirai can do one of the best looking moonsaults today but to do it on that stage with that kind of accuracy makes it all the more impressive. It just looked cool and that’s enough to warrant a mention.

Pat McAfee’s Swanton Off Of WarGames

You might say that this is a good way to do something like this. You’ll probably be hearing about McAfee again on this list and there is a good reason for that. McAfee had no business being as good as he was in these situations and yet he kept pulling it off, including with this great looking dive from the top of the cage onto everyone else. He shouldn’t be doing that and yet he made it look even better than almost anyone else could these days. That’s hard to believe, but he made it look easy.

Jeff Hardy’s Swanton Onto Elias

This is better known as the one where Hardy slammed his head into the steps because Hardy is kind of freaking nuts. I almost left it off because of the landing but it wouldn’t feel right to not have Hardy included in here somehow. It was an awesome looking dive and while the landing is what people will remember the most, Hardy can still do this like few others, even at 43.

Sammy Guevara And The Golf Cart

Now THIS is the one that people remember and with good reason. The image of Guevara being chased down by a golf cart of all things and then taking a heck of a bump off of it, all of which continued a feud with a maniacal Matt Hardy was the kind of stuff you can only hope to script. AEW shot it perfectly and it was just awesome, with everyone playing their part perfectly.

Then there is the winner, which was exactly what I wanted.

Hangman Page Rides A Horse Into Stadium Stampede

Every now and then you find someone who is perfect for the character they are playing. That is the case with Page, who is the definition of a cowboy wrestler. He looks like one, dresses like one, talks like one and acts like one. The line of “I’M GONNA DO SOME COWBOY S***!” is still maybe the best line AEW has ever had and Page is one of the best characters on the show. Then he rode a horse into a football stadium, because that’s what a cowboy is supposed to do, especially in the spot of the year.

So it’s that time again as we need to look back at everything that took place, both the good and the bad, of the last year. However, since this year is also the start of a decade, it’s going to be a double shot of the whole thing. Therefore, I’m going to blaze through these with three or four a day for the next five days for the 2019 Awards and then do the same thing next week for the 2010s Awards. I don’t want these things dragging out forever like they usually do so marathoning them is the best option. Let’s get to it.

This is one of the cooler ones as a lot of people are going to remember the short bursts of things instead of the big, long editions. That’s perfectly understandable and it was the case again this year. These are the quick moments that blew people’s minds and just looked cool, which are going to leave a lot of people talking for a long time to come.

Johnny Gargano And Adam Cole’s Double Dive (Takeover: Toronto)

In a feud that had one long, epic match after another for the NXT Title, they needed something big to close it out and that’s what they had here. This was inside a hardcore cage and they beat the heck out of each other, with the match going on for over fifty minutes with neither being able to pull it off. That meant it was time to do something huge and they did that in spade.

At the end of the match, both of them wound up at the top of the cage and then dove off (for whatever reason) and crashed HARD through a table, with Cole covering Gargano to retain the title. This was an absolutely insane ending and the crash looked incredible, as it was going to be whomever could get an arm over winning the thing. Just awesome stuff here and it came at the end of an epic match.

Tommaso Ciampa Ends Adam Cole (Takeover: WarGames)

WarGames is the kind of match that works every single time. It’s one of the biggest and most violent matches in WWE and while it hasn’t been around long in this company, it has developed a reputation as something special. A lot of that is due to it being in NXT where they can do some better stuff, and the big ending to this year’s men’s match lived up to the hype.

At the end of a long WarGames, Tommaso Ciampa and Adam Cole wound up on top of the double cage and there was a table beneath them. There was no way that this would end well and that was exactly what happened, with Ciampa lifting Cole up for a super White Noise through the table to FINALLY finish the match. I was in the arena for this one and could barely look, because the image of Cole upside down and that high in the air actually got to me a bit. That was something else and thankfully they were both ok. It was the only way to end the match and Ciampa looked like a star all over again.

Randy Orton Spikes Ricochet (Raw – October 28)

There are some finishers that are going to work no matter how many times you see them. Some of the best finishers in the world have become nearly iconic and that is the case with the RKO. It has even turned into a joke about how Orton can hit it from anywhere, which makes the thing that much more impactful. That was the case again this time, but the landing is what made it work.

In the buildup to Crown Jewel’s ten man tag, it was time for everyone to go after everyone on the other team. This was prime time for an RKO Outta Nowhere and that’s what happened, with Ricochet missing a dive off the top but rolling to his feet. Orton slid in and hit a heck of an RKO, with Ricochet landing on the top of his head for one of the best sells I’ve ever seen from the move. The RKO still works great and Ricochet can do things that no one else can and that was incredible.

But then, there was this.

Keith Lee Pounces Adam Cole Off The Screen (NXT – November 27)

Wrestling is not a normal world. It is basically a comic book come to life at times and that makes things all the more interesting. At the same time though, these people are human and there are only so many things that they can do. Sometimes though you get someone who can do things that do not seem human, which is what we saw on this day.

Lee and Dominik Dijakovic were challenging for the NXT Tag Team Titles when Cole interfered. This did not sit well with Lee, who Pounced Cole over the barricade and off camera in something that looked like it was out of a cartoon. It was one of the most ridiculous (in a good way) things I’ve ever seen as Cole was knocked a crazy distance in another instance of Lee looking inhuman. This stuck with me more than anything else and it was the Spot Of The Year.

See spot on highlight reels? These are the kind of things that you are going to see over and over again and for a very good reason. These are designed to be short bursts that can be played over and over again at a rapid pace, usually because they’re so fun to watch. At the same time, they’re the kinds of things that you can show to people and see just how cool wrestling can really be. So what’s on tap from 2018?

Velveteen Dream’s Elbow From The Ladder – Takeover: New Orleans

I was there for this one and my goodness did he ever get some height on this thing. There was nothing special to the move that he did but it was so high in the air that it looked incredible. It’s one of those spots where the guy might be dead but you can’t quite tell. Incredible visual here and Dream was the only one who could pull it off.

Ricochet Moonsaults Off A Falling Ladder – Takeover: New Orleans

From the same match and a moment where you can’t believe he actually did that. Ricochet is one of the best high fliers of all time and can control his body at a level that few have ever approached. When I saw him do this, I said out loud “Sure, why not”, because you believe that he actually can pull something like this off. The timing it took to make this work was amazing, and is actually more impressive to me than getting height or another rotation.

Will Ospreay’s Counter vs. Kota Ibushi

I’m not sure when this was from but it was a show where New Japan had its production at the top notch. Ibushi tries a middle rope hurricanrana but Ospreay snaps forward and lands on his feet. The camera then zooms in on Ospreay’s face and he gives one of the best glares you’ll ever see. Cut to Ibushi slowly looking over his shoulder and not believing what he’s about to see. It’s a great spot, with the camera work pushing it way over the edge.

Ricochet’s Moonsault Off The Top Of The WarGames Cage – Takeover: WarGames II

It’s Ricochet doing a big flip off of something onto a bunch of people. That’s kind of a required spot on a list like this and there isn’t much else to say. Ricochet can just do these things and there are very few people in the world who can approach his level. There’s a reason he’s going to be on this list so many times, with a few more to come.

Tommaso Ciampa Throws Away Johnny Gargano’s Wedding Ring – Takeover: Chicago II

The title of this one pretty much says it all and that’s because of the emotions that came with it. Ciampa and Gargano already hate each other but Ciampa took it up a notch by doing something like this. That wouldn’t have had the same impact from any other pairing but here, it was another act that furthered their already amazing war.

Adam Cole Superkicks Ricochet Out Of The Air – Takeover: Brooklyn IV

This is one that I completely underrated when I was watching it live. I’ve looked back at this a few times and the timing that Cole showed on this was something else as he nailed that to perfection. It’s hard enough doing something like that right side up but Ricochet was upside down at the same time. That’s not normal and something you almost never see, because not many people would actually try to pull it off.

But then there’s this.

Ricochet Flips In Front Of Velveteen Dream And Lands On His Feet

I saw this as it happened and couldn’t believe what I was watching. Since then I’ve gone back and watched at at various times and it just does not get old. From the flip itself to Ricochet’s face to everything in between, this is as good as it got for me. Ricochet is on another level with all of this stuff and he’s doing things that shouldn’t be able to be done. Incredible visual here and the coolest thing I saw this year.

This is a new one.

We always talk about the moves and the matches, but what about the individual moments? Sometimes you have moments that just catch your eye because they’re either shocking, cool, or just something you haven’t seen before. That’s what we’re looking at today, meaning some of these might be big moves while some of them are just people doing something cool.

As should always be the case, we’ll go to NXT first with Roderick Strong superplexing Adam Cole onto the rest of the participants in WarGames at Takeover: WarGames. As is going to be the case more often than not on this list, the visual is what makes the biggest difference here. While I found it to be a bit of a stretch that everyone was just standing there waiting, there’s not much that can be done on that front. It was a great visual and part of an amazing match which needed a signature moment. Check on all three.

Now we’ll get one of the annual options out of the way with Shane McMahon’s Cell dive. It’s always a cool visual but when you reach the point where you know it’s coming, a lot of the excitement goes away. I’ve seen Shane dive off of something so many times now that while there’s a quick thrill, there’s not much more to it than that. You have to mention it because it’s a dive off the Cell, but that’s as far (Or is it low?) as this is going to go.

We’ll head back to the beginning of the year now for another something that involves being up in the air. This time it was at the Royal Rumble with AJ Styles kicking out of the Super AA. That’s John Cena’s mega special move and Styles became one of the first (if not the first) people to kick out of the thing. It made Styles look like he could actually win the match, even if he lost not too long thereafter. That was the kind of NO WAY kickout that was needed though and it’s the biggest thing that happened in one of the best matches of the year.

Next up we have a case where I have no idea which one it was but it doesn’t really matter. The Singh Brothers might not be the most useful team in the world but they’re great at taking big falls. That’s what happened when Randy Orton threw one of them off of the Punjabi Prison at Battleground and my goodness did that boy bounce off of the announcers’ table. You could also put in the time where Orton nearly killed one of them with the suplex onto the table but this one was a longer fall and the only good thing to come out of that horrid match.

Finally though, we have something that spawned a catchphrase and one of the best visuals the company has had in a long time. On April 10, Braun Strowman flipped over an ambulance to seemingly crush Roman Reigns because Strowman WASN’T FINISHED WITH HIM. This was part of one of the best feuds of the year and Strowman looked like the biggest monster not named Brock Lesnar in years. It was just cool, and sometimes that’s what works better than anything else.
