Criticize Me

Normally I wait for the end of the year for this but for some reason I feel like I should do it now.

This is something I half dread, half look forward to, half need (like math lessons): an annual request for you all to critique me. Basically I’d like to know what I’m doing wrong and what I can do better or what you’d like to see me do more/less of.  All I ask is two things:

1. Be at least somewhat courteous with it. I can be receptive to constructive criticism but less so to ripping me apart, though if that was the case I doubt you’d be here in the first place.

2. Understand that there are some things I can’t/won’t be changing. There are some shows I have to cover for the sake of the hits they get/covering them for other sites. At the same time, there are some shows I’m just not going to cover full time but if it’s something I can fit in, it’s certainly not out of the question. Outside of shows, there might be stuff I do that you don’t like/stuff you’d like me to do more of. If either is the case, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

And now, with a gulp, go for it.

I came here last year and suggested maybe more interaction with everyone who is commenting. Nice to see that has happened a lot more.

Not really a critique just a personal thing I would love to see is more documentary reviews. Nothing spectacular maybe just a quick thought on say a 24 special or something as those are always awesome.

Yeah the lack of responding was bothering me. Sometimes I need someone else to point it out to me.

I could see that happening. Nothing in depth but a little something here and there.

    Hi KB,

Been following you since your forum on WZ and I am a regular visitor from the day this site was launched.
Yours is the first review I read for any major show before moving on to other websites.
These are 2 suggestions I have which I am not sure are feasible or not but would personally enjoy:
    1) With the way you post your review within half an hour of show ending, I assume you write them live with the show. Is there a way you can keep posting it simultaneously as the other websites do instead of putting the entire review at one.

2)While I love your match review format with play by play and a rating in the end, I think promo segments do not get the same treatment from you.
Is it possible to add a grading system to segments too.
This can be exclusive to dedicated in ring segments.
For eg: When Ronda Rousey gives a 5 minutes promo, you can grade it. But skip grading the short selfie promos or backstage segments.

Thank You for all your efforts.
With the time constraints, yours is the website that keeps me up to date with the wrestling world and helps me catch up Pay Per Views without spending so much time on weekly shows.

    • Thomas Hall says:

      Much appreciated.

      1. I already do that actually (minus the ratings) every week at Wrestlingrumors.net. I do it for Raw, Smackdown, NXT UK, NXT and pay per views.

      2. Probably not going to be doing ratings for promos, but I can try to add some more to them.

There is something I’ve always wondered, what all do you take into consideration when grading a match? Does placement come into consideration? Do the specific workers ability sway you? For instance, you will comment on how two wrestlers were working and had a nice little match and give it a D+ but then turn around on the same show and call a match of similar length a C+ with a comment like, these two tried but weren’t really clicking. I guess I’d like to see more reasoning or transparency, because while I understand the grades are opinions, sometimes the opinions make me scratch my head. Like if match one was between, say, Dana Brooke and Tamina, okay fair play, for them a nice match may be in that D range, where as two more polished workers, say Kofi and Sheamus, could have a bad match for them but it still be better than match one. Does that make sense?

    • Thomas Hall says:

I think so and it’s pretty much what you’re saying.

Not all matches are going to be the same as there are going to be different expectations of them. For instance, if Rock vs. Austin was a short, seven minute match in the main event of Wrestlemania, it would be called a disaster. On the other hand, if Dana and Tamina had a 30 minute match, it would be even worse. You expect different things from different matches.

So no, they’re not on the exact same scale, as even a bad match from two skilled workers is likely going to be better than the best that some bad workers can pull off.

I think you’re continuing to do a great job. If I had to recommend something to cover, I think digging back through some of the old episodes of Impact before 2010 could be fun.

Hey KB thanks for the reviews I legit dont watch Raw but your review keep me up to date. But I remember you use to do a lot of older random wrestling show like from the early 80s late 70s and I havent seen any in a while. I was hoping if you had the time if you could find some more. I really enjoy your analysis on wrestling during a forgotten era ” pre Hulkamaina ” again thank you and definitely keep up the good work.

Writing I have zero complaints on. Top notch as usual.

My only real complaint is that lately, the uploads haven’t been timely at all. I know we were somewhat spoiled by getting most reviews the day of, or even just a few minutes after the event was done, but for example the season finale of Lucha Underground was on the 7th, and the review for it just hit today. I don’t think it’s a massive problem now, but it could cause issues later.

Other than that, everything is top notch. The re-reviews are good stuff, and I enjoy the looks back at different eras of WWE.

    • Thomas Hall says:

      Much appreciated.

Yeah some of those being late is hard to avoid. The problem is everything being stacked on Wednesdays, where I have Raw 04, the column, NXT UK, NXT UK, NXT, 205 Live, Lucha and Ring of Honor. Typically what’s going to draw the most views gets priority and WWE is always going to dominate that, hence why Lucha doesn’t get as much attention.

  7. NightShiftLoser says:

I enjoyed the Wrestler Of The Day series, and think it would be cool to see that with some of the newer stars. Omega, Ciampa, EC3, Cody…

    • Thomas Hall says:

True story: a few days when I got done with that series, multiple people said they hadn’t seen me so happy in a long time. I HATED doing that by the end and the only reason I didn’t stop was pure stuborness.

      • Liam Fenech says:

Kb as I told you WCCW is my favourite non WWE promotion What’s your opinion on it? If you like it would you be prepared to review some more shows?

      • NightShiftLoser says:

I can see how time consuming that could be, especially with everything else you cover. It could be cool as an occasional thing too, though. For instance, Matt Riddle is new to WWE, and a profile would be interesting. Same as when Ricochet or Adam Cole debuted.

  8. Demon says:

If possible, coverage of wxw. Even PPVs shall be more than enough.

  9. comadre says:

I think you are doing just fine and i can relate to your opinion most of the time hence why i come here on a regularly…

What confuses me sometimes is your treating of ROH. You are always criticizing them for their TV schedule and you’re absolutely right about it but your coverage of ROH is as iconsistent as their TV schedule. I just wish you would review more of their big shows in time or at least all of their PPVs.

But all in all just keep up the good work. Thanks for everything!

    • Thomas Hall says:

      Much appreciated on everything.

Assuming by big shows you mean the Honor Club exclusives, I just don’t have time. It’s true that I’m late on the PPVs and I’m working on Death Before Dishonor, but they’re usually later because they’re pretty low on the priority list. I’ll try to get those up faster though.
